The Walkers have arrived in Empire City like royalty. There is a mansion on Barclay Road, a yacht in the harbor, and a ten-year-old daughter handing out banknotes to shop clerks as if they were candy. Caleb has more money than his family could spend in ten lifetimes, and that is exactly what worries him.
Horace Hartley of the Hartley Brothers Theatrical Trust sees it differently. To him, a fortune that grew this fast must be crooked, and he sets out to prove it with planted informers, tax inquiries and newspapers asking loudly where the peddler’s millions came from. As the shares slide, patient men with deep pockets wait to pick up the pieces, and a smiling rescuer arrives from the East with an empire that may be made of paper.
Caleb can fight bankers. What he isn’t sure he can fight is his own success. So in the middle of the war he takes Annie down to the cheapest lodging houses in the city and lets her see how the other half lives, hoping to raise an heir rather than a princess.
