Well, that’s how it feels sometimes when you write for contests, especially one with a very tight word count limitation. You have no idea why you do it, at times you hate doing it, but you still do it and love the buzz or seeing that 1,000-word count appear.
In my first collection, I covered from 2018 when I put in my very first story through to 2022 when I walked away swearing that I would never write contest entries again. I gave myself lots of made-up reasons as to why ranging from “not having the time” through to “I had other things I wanted to concentrate on,” and even, “they don’t understand me.” The reality was I had a crisis of confidence; I didn’t think I was good enough.
Then early in 2023 I remembered what an old and dear friend said to me about writing... “write because you enjoy it, not for any other reason.”
Those words rang true, so I started entering the world of 1,000-word limit contests again because I enjoyed writing them.
Each month the writers are given a theme they must write no more than 1,000 words on that subject. The story is submitted by the deadline and then after a short reading period, it is voted on by the readers.
I have had a range of results ranging from winning through to not even being placed. Therefore, between each story, I have given a summary of where the story you have just read finished and what my thoughts were about its performance. I have then introduced the next story giving brief details of what the next theme was.
As most stories contain adult content (smut basically) I have added a Mature status to the whole collection and each story has individual content tags at the start. They do vary wildly across genres so would suggest you read the introduction and tags first to see if they are to your taste or not.
On a final note, the title of this collection is, I am addicted. When writing to a tight word count sometimes you can pad or contract just by using the right words or descriptions. Other times it becomes cramped to try to get a concept in, developed and concluded before you run out of words. It becomes an art form in itself to hit that deadline after covering exactly everything that you want, and I admit I am addicted to trying to get it right.
This book covers from May 2023 through to August 2024 which at the time of writing is still ongoing so not included.
