Birgit Adams, being the offspring of Steve and Kara Adams, is and remains a force to be dealt with. Like any child, she inherited traits from both of her parents, both positive and negative. It's undeniable both of her parents are very intelligent people--you can't become a Doctor of Chemistry or a self-made corporate mogul without smarts, and she shares this trait with her parents. She's also very focused and driven, as her karate skills clearly demonstrate. It's of no surprise to anyone who read the earlier books that she inherited their sex drives as well. Here though, that's both a positive and a negative.
For all the knowledge she already has in this arena, her inexperience is both an asset and liability. After shedding herself of a burden she no longer wished to bear, she goes on a bit of a rampage, trying out as many new things in as many differing configurations as she's able, with as many willing eligible partners as she can find. Here though, is where she causes herself problems. Much like her father was at the same age, she's still too inexperienced to fully realize the downstream consequences of her actions, and in the end, hurts both herself and some of her partners. The lessons she learns from these mistakes, and how she deals with them, are at the heart of this book in the story.
Beyond Birgit, there is the usual full cast of characters, with all the Adams children growing and progressing individually as well. Steve, being Steve, does add to his body count, along with successfully negotiating the usual pitfalls that any business owner needs to negotiate. However, no matter how you cut it, this is a book centered on the Empress of the Universe--it wasn't titled The Pumpkin Patch for nothing!
