When Laurie's parents were killed by Indians, the townsfolk sent her away to her only known relative, an uncle who lived back East. She almost didn't make it, but was helped by a young man who was just as adrift as she was. He knew her uncle, or at least of the man, who was big, surly and mean. He counseled Laurie not to go to the lighthouse where the man worked as the keeper of the light. She had nowhere else to go, though, so she gathered her courage and had her companion pound on the thick, oaken door with a rock. When that door opened, Lauri's real adventure began. She found the gruff exterior of her uncle to be a facade. He had loved her mother in an unconventional manner and now he loved his niece with the same urges. Meanwhile the boy she had fallen in with stayed and she found him fascinating, too. Eventually she found she loved two men. She knew the townsfolk would rant and rage about that, but she found a way to divert their attention and make a family with the two men she loved.
