Let's just admit it. I'm an irascible old fart. After my wife divorced me to go save whales, or a forest somewhere or whatever, I got to do what I wanted, when I wanted. Life was good. I played some golf and wrote dirty stories. Then, out of the blue, I got a call from a woman who sounded fifteen but was twenty-six. She said she was my ex-wife's niece and asked if she could come crash at my house while she did something or other in town. I hadn't seen her since she was ten, but she was family, of a sort, even if it was only legal family. And maybe she wasn't even that, since I was divorced from the legality that had made her my niece. Anyway, I said yes and what showed up made my jaw drop. Unconventional didn't even begin to describe her. If I'd just seen her on the street I would have jumped to some very stereotypical and erroneous conclusions. But I told her to come in and it was the best decision I ever made. Her visit was only supposed to last a week. She had to get back home to her six-year-old. She didn't let me push her around and I began salivating over her. That was okay because there was no husband or father for her little boy. We had nothing in common. I was twenty years older than her. It was Beauty and the Beast. Beauty tamed the beast, though, and I couldn't be happier about it.
