Bobby just wanted to be a good scout and that meant doing a good turn, or good deed, every day. That was supposed to be easy. Do something nice for someone and you're good to go until tomorrow. The problem was, at fifteen years old, Bobby couldn't seem to get a good deed done without causing a disaster. Eventually he just gave up. Then he saw Mrs. Wilson carrying groceries from her car inside her house and he tried one more time. He was extra careful and … it worked! No disaster! So he kept doing good deeds for Mrs. Wilson, becoming a frequent visitor to her house. The problem with that was that Gloria Johnson was the neighborhood pariah. She was divorced, she had no visible means of support, and she was gorgeous. In the fifties, that didn't go over well with most adults. Or at least with most wives. Bobby knew this, but he thought Mrs. Wilson was nice. And she was a blast to look at. So he kept his good deeds secret, especially after a nosy neighbor reported to his mother that she had seen him going in "that woman's" house. And he and Mrs. Wilson became friends. And then they became good friends. And by the time she could do what she wanted to do without being hauled off to jail for it, they were the best possible friends – with benefits, even! That could have been the end of the story, because Bobby was grown up, now and going out into the big, wide world. They might never see each other again. What changed all that was a gift he gave her before he left, a gift that she carried inside her for nine months, and a gift she could keep for at least eighteen or so years.
