Embracing Autism Gleefully is the first story in the life of Robert A. "Glee" Gleason, an amazingly intelligent young man afflicted with a unique brand of autism that allows him to communicate in a startling way, culminating with a graduation speech for the ages. Winner of CAW #24 writing competition.
When I wrote this I had no experience with anyone with autism. A Moderator friend at a writing website did have two boys with autism, and for many months I listened to her struggles on a daily basis, her hopes, her defeats, and her wins. One day I decided out of the blue to write a story for her, one of inspiration. Much to my horror, when the story was published as part of the Calling All Writers writing competition, she read the opening line and then closed the story! However, she did scroll to the end, ready to drop a blistering comment. Then she saw the praise for the story and against her better judgment, opted to read it. Tears later, she placed a comment on the story that brought tears to my eyes.
Reader's Comments:
"I can only think of one word to describe this story……..AWESOME!" (sm)
"This was a very lovely story, where I felt anger, sadness, love, and happiness. Thank you for this." (hc)
"This story is amazingly brief for what it accomplishes. The concept is inspired and you handle it very well. There is a great diversity of quotations presented, some from historically significant people. That plays well into the characterization of Glee, It gives him interesting dimension and credibility. I don't disagree with you when you suggest that this is the best story you have written, but I might have said most important rather than best." (mc)
"Profound, insightful and compassionate. I can think of many other superlatives but I think those are the most descriptive of you. Thank you for writing such an inspiring story. Autistic people really are special." (rus)
"This is quite frankly a work of art. This story is entertaining, interesting and thought provoking. It pulls at so many emotions that it’s scary.Words escape me and I have trouble at times expressing my feelings so not much else to say except WOW!" (cu)
