Julie Marino is three months shy of her sixteenth birthday when she watches Elvis Presley perform Hound Dog on the Milton Berle show in 1956. Elvis's erotic gyrations ignite sexual feelings within her body that she doesn't understand. It leads to self-exploration and a lot of confusion.
Puberty is a traumatic time in a young girl's life. Even more so in the 1950s when sex was a taboo subject and there was no Sex Ed taught in school and no internet. The physical changes to the girl's body during puberty are visible, but other changes have no outward signs. Hormones produce sexual urges and thoughts that are confusing to an innocent and clueless girl like Julie. Frustrating. Frightening. Even enjoyable in ways not understood by her. Now imagine how much more traumatic those hormonal changes are for a girl saddled with hypersexuality, today's medical term for obsessive-compulsive disorder or addiction to sex. In the 1950s, it was called nymphomania.
Julie experiments with a boy, but it’s a married couple who mentors her. The wife, with the assistance of her husband, guides Julie through her body's needs. And they are only the first of many.
Julie reflects on her life as a nymphomaniac. It wasn't something she chose. She was born with it. Her emotional recollection takes us through her life's journey, from her discovery and confusion, to her exploration and experimentation, and finally her enlightenment. Throughout it all, she deals with emotional highs and lows, a rollercoaster of heart-wrenching torment and heart-warming thrills.

I enjoyed the story setting, as I grew up in the same time period. Btw, we called it 'weed' then, and later it was 'grass, dope, or maryjane. I never heard the word marijuana until the 60's - but I lived in the midwest. It reads like an autobiography; so real. I also liked the humor sprinkled throughout.
