The book is not without its flaws. The first half has way too much storyline of domestic arrangements and sexual shenanigans, which detracts from the fundamental structure of the Martian fight to stay free. Then suddenly the switch flips to the preparations for the fight and the second half of the novel appears a little bit rushed.
That said there are some brilliant insights and plot twists, including parts of Easthem trying act like Westhem, and some excellent new weapons and strategy development that is totally realistic. The Martians never defend the same way twice.
There are hints that Westhem will collapse economically under the weight of their losses but the novel closes with them stupidly trying to prepare to go again. I don't know whether that is a lead-in to the next book or whether there will be a gap to Perfect World. For a long time, the gap from Greenies to A Perfect World was a constant source of personal speculation and dissatisfaction for me that has been partly filled by the two Rolly Lawson stories.
This universe is a total standout amongst other universes, the quality of the writing and the imagination of the authors puts it a cut above the everything else on the site. Martian Vengeance is a welcome addition to that universe.
