Unlike the earlier books in A Well Lived Life, where Steve Adams' life is the primary focus of the story, this book is really all about his kids. Yes, Steve beds a few more new girls, takes down a long-time business rival, and even contemplates turning his Trio into a Quad, but these are the subplots! Puberty has now overtaken more than half the Adams kids, and the consequences have all turned out differently for each of them. In some cases, they've been mild; Matthew has settled into a long-term relationship with Chelsea, and the only real drama in their lives concerns their age difference possibly raising eyebrows and triggering wagging tongues. On the other end of the spectrum, Stephie is struggling with her emotions, so much so it costs her both friends and a would-be fiancé.

Jesse, who has struggled in the past with comparisons to his father, seems to have finally found his own unique path. Early on in our story, he embraces a situation his father could only have dreamt of at age 16, but at the same time, he's also far more controlled. Though he's far from monogamous, he settles into a relatively calm situation, having the foresight to avoid the types of situations that his father might have embraced at the same age, but would have eventually caused him problems.

Birgit, being the oldest daughter of Steve and Kara, is a force all her own. This book, more than any other (so far), is HER book, with her experiencing several highs and lows within a mere six-month timeframe. Her finally accepting the fact she's not going to get what she truly wants causes a thaw in the cold war between her and her mother, but also results in her then being needled by Loki in the worst ways possible as she redirects her focus on a new goal. When Birgit sets her mind to getting what she wants, Birgit WILL get what she wants!
