Jason Stewart’s summer begins like any other. Football practice, long afternoons, and the ordinary worries of being seventeen. Then, during a routine training exercise, electricity suddenly sparks from his hands.
Overnight, Jason is labeled “special” and sent to a remote camp for young people with extraordinary abilities. There he discovers that he is not alone. Some students can create and control fire. Others can generate electricity. The camp offers them a place where they can learn to control their powers and live without fear of being treated as monsters.
For the first time, Jason feels accepted. He makes friends with Tom, a lightning user who can surround his body with energy, and Sophie, a powerful girl struggling to understand what her abilities mean for her future. Together, they begin learning what they are capable of and what it means to use their gifts responsibly.
But the outside world is far less accepting. Two dangerous gangs, the Flames and the Thunders, have turned their powers into weapons. When the rival groups join forces as the Alliance, Jason and his friends are drawn into a conflict far bigger than themselves.
After a disastrous encounter leaves them hunted and misunderstood, Jason must choose between hiding from his powers and accepting the responsibility that comes with them. With the Alliance growing stronger and an attack threatening an entire city, he and his friends have only a short time to uncover the truth, rescue someone they care about, and prove that having extraordinary abilities does not make someone a criminal.
