Winter has been harsh on Darwin's World, worse than usual, and the tribe is running out of food. How long before the ice and snow melt? How soon will the wild herds they depend on for food to return? No one knows.
Another problem: raiders, who've already attacked once and may return at any time.
Despite the danger, despite the freezing weather, there is no choice they must abandon their tiny village and head southwest, away from the continental glaciers that still cover the northern part of the continent. The hope is that spring has arrived there, bringing the herds back.
The trek west is not the only concern. They will need to find a place they can settle permanently, somewhere with water and year-round access to the animals they require for food, and they'll need to build shelters before winter returns.
They soon find that their new home comes with an additional problem. Across the narrow seaway to the south, a form of slavery has become established, one that requires a ready supply of slaves to maintain their way of life.
And they've already taken two members of the tribe...
