This novel is part of a series set in the American Southwest. The setting and time period for this story is Texas, first a Republic, then a state within the US Union. Reading the first novel in the series, Jacob Jennings, is helpful but not essential.
Santa Ana, back in charge of Mexico's government, has raised a new army which will retake the upstart Texas Republic. This time, he faces not only the Texans but the US Army which is determined to defend the new state.
Jacob Jennings and his partner Jean-Louis Lafitte respond to their nation's call, leaving Jacob's son Edward in charge of both ranchos. It's a task that would test any full-grown man, much less a youngster.
In Mexico, Isom Jennings, the former slave freed by Jacob, finds himself conscripted into the Mexican Army, a parallel story that is also history-based.
How they respond to life in this turbulent time is the subject of this book.
The story takes place in Texas, Mexico, and New Mexico. The locations are real, many of the characters are real, and actions are based on real events.
