Jacob Jennings lost his parents while still a child. An uncle took him in, despite struggling to feed his family. When a second uncle offered to take Jacob in, he embarked on a new life, first as a smuggler, then a sailor, and then a gunsmith.
When Mexican soldiers showed up to demand two derelict cannons, needed by the settlers in Gonzales to stand off Indian attacks, they got an unexpected reply: 'Come and take them!'
Jacob came to know the leaders in the revolution, Sam Houston, Jim Bowie, many others, and when asked to lead the evacuation of noncombatants, Jacob reluctantly agreed. Through hunger, weather, and danger, he led east in what became known as the Runaway Scrape.
He fought Mexicans, Comanches, outlaws, and Texas ever-changing weather while establishing a ranch with his partner, met the woman who would become his wife, and in the process himself as one of the leading citizens of the new Republic.
Jacob's story is based on real history filled with real events and real characters who deserve to be remembered. Follow along and enjoy!
