The story of Steve Adams’ life is ultimately defined by his relationships. While they’ve changed over time, at this point in time he's closest to his wives (of course!) and Suzanne, with Jennifer, Elyse, and Liz just outside this deepest sanctum. Realizing he needs close, intimate advisors by his side to maintain lagom, Steve forms what becomes known as his Inner Circle. With Suzanne as his First Officer, it includes Natalie, who helped him close the circle of a twenty years long journey, and Leigh, a promising student from Sensei Ichirou’s dojo. Rounding out this core group is Jackson, an IIT student who from the start sees Steve as a font of questions rather than answers, and becomes the closest thing to a successor to Jorge in his life that Steve can imagine.
With all of the external turmoil Steve’s experiencing as this chapter of our story opens, this group couldn’t have formed at a better time. With his manic episodes intensifying, Steve finally agrees to try a non-psychoactive drug to tamp them down. The timing couldn’t be more perfect, because the turmoil, along with triumphs, in his life continue to intensify. Between the triumphs of births and marriages, the turmoil of outside forces working against NIKA, the seeming breakdown of a crucial friendship, and even death in the mix, Steve will be under more stress than ever. Steve has long known it takes a team to manage his life, and he’s got the best possible team behind his back at this crucial moment.
Meanwhile, Jesse both embraces and rejects parts of Steve’s sexual history, blazing his own trail. Matthew and Chelsea reach a major waypoint in the inevitable destination their relationship is heading for. Albert and Jane’s relationship moves forward, and so far, they continue to follow Matthew and Chelsea’s example. Birgit begins to chafe against what she considers overbearing parenting from Kara, while continuing to worship the ground Steve walks on… unless of course he acts like a dumb boy.
