This is more of a thought experiment:
What if the exclusion of a supposedly loved family member wasn’t malicious, or some kind of evil plot, but simply a genuine mistake? How could a family hope to mend their relationship? How could someone get past what had happened?
It struck me as something with incredible potential and couldn’t get it out of my head anymore.

This was written after seeing a Writing Prompt in a Subreddit I’m a member of. It was an idea, something the OP wanted to use as the preset for a story, but didn’t have the time necessary to work out the details. So, it was given to us.
So, I asked for permission and am now trying to work through the thoughts I had while reading the prompt, and I’m happy to say that he gave it. Hope someone likes it.

Well written story. You can feel Chris's pain from the rejections.

Great Story, Satisfying Conclusion

I really enjoyed it, especially with how Chris handled it. The way Chris handles talking with his family was enjoyable, as well as the way the Dad also holds the Mother and Daughter accountable. I'm annoyed that the extended family didn't get reality check or seem to really understand the severity of the situation, that's more a dislike of the characters that are meant to be kinda unlikable, not of your writing. Especially since the way Chris handled that was also satisfying, choosing to simply treat them the same way they treat him, almost as familiar strangers and drawing a line in the sand, as well as the rest of the immediate family pushing back against the extended family. And finally the growth and reconnection of the family was also great, the push and pull and self reflection, Chris growing self worth through the flirting with women from his job and finally believing that his Mother and Sister actually wanted to be with him, not out of pity but genuine interest and love, which I feel happens only after they themselves start to actually believe it as well. Another banger and looking forward to more.

If you like this Author's other work this is worth a read

The inception of this work is that a loved family member is excluded by mistake and it (almost) rips a family apart. Coming up with such an exclusion by mistake is obviously a challenge. The reason and the fall out was a pretty good attempt to cover it. The opening premise was too similar to TangoPeru's "The Broken Circle" for comfort - the key difference is that the women didn't explicitly state they weren't going to engage with the MC first so that it could be seen as accidental. It wasn't accidental, they had already decided ahead of time not to engage with the MC they just hadn't talked about it amongst themselves. Like Broken Circle parent aged men understood the immediate implications before the women. Given the level of gun violence in the USA today I'm surprised they weren't worried about him returning with vengeance on his mind. Since this is about relationship repair I thought that having the women just 'try and fix it' as men might try and fix a physical problem was pretty good.

Good for a quick read.

Of all the women not a single one could empathize with the one inductee who was not visited? I think this was a little to much. The ending felt a little rushed. Otherwise it was an enjoyable read.

Not a bad read

Thought the premise, young male family member omitted from family fun, was interesting. Treatment of the issue was superficial. He has sex with his sister and then is cured? Unlikely.

Decent story but fails to deliver on the premise

Is an ok story, mostly still drums the typical family-betrayal beats. The premise was that what led to the happenings were genuine mistakes. Nothing that happened can be construed as a "mistake", let alone genuine. Lapses of judgement by the mom and sis (and honestly, happily waving and then purposely ignoring but happily making him listen is just cruel), not even telling the MC about the decision. No one even bothering to check in during or after. Apparently not even checking on the MC being awake. Lack of remorse and accountability shown by the family (no-one bothered to reach out, despite the uncles initial reaction they happily pumped on once it wasn't their problem anymore, etc), doesn't help portray it either. It maybe wasn't malicious (true malice is rare anyway in the family-betrayal genre) but it was certainly negligence.
