The closed drapes helped shroud the room in darkness. Outside, the wind howled with a haunting, wolf-like impression. Just that sound made the house seem colder than it was.

“Put your head down and rest,” he whispered. “You know you want to. Things will be better in the morning, I promise. Everything always looks better in the light of day.”

Ten days ago...

The District of Columbia District Court was packed like a strip joint bordering a military base on payday. As expected, the anticipation level was high as it was rumored that the jury had made a decision and was coming back shortly. The deliberation process had taken several days, which led to wide speculation on both sides.

The defense looked more than a little ragged and worn down, the six-week trial having taken its toll on many, but none more than Joseph and Willow Shore, the husband and wife defendants. Their team of high-profile, very expensive attorneys ranged from harried to miserable to catatonic.

The prosecution looked far more dapper, and confident, though some of it could be attributed to false bravado. The lead prosecutor was none other than F. Thomas Bourbon, the United State Attorney for the District of Columbia, who was dressed in his typical Dolce & Gabbana black pinstripe suit that cost more than the average person made in a month. Bourbon was given carte blanche by the Attorney General of the United States to ensure that justice prevailed. Neither Joseph nor Willow Shore were well-liked by the conservative Republican administration.

There was some noise up front, and the bailiff called out "All rise, this court is now in session" as Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis IV entered from his chambers, black robes flowing behind him as he swiftly made his way to the elevated seat. Landis was a fourth-generation judge, his namesake being a federal judge and the first Commissioner of Baseball, presiding over the infamous "Black Sox" scandal that rocked the sport in 1919. A brief nod from him and the Clerk of the Court opened a side door and in walked the jury, all twelve of them wearing the ID-Screen masks recently introduced to protect their identities after 7 jurists were slain two years ago in a drug cartel trial.
