The lights passed by overhead, their rhythm much like that of the repetitive thwack of tires passing over concrete sections on a freeway. Voices were raised and there were distant shouts, the questions asked going mostly unanswered or at least seemingly so in the fog of semi-consciousness. A female face loomed close, distorted, almost comical save for the circumstances.

"Mr. Gleason! If you can hear me, blink or nod your head." The woman looked to be about his age, in her 30s. She was wearing a stethoscope.

"Just Glee," he started, but his voice was weak, "I would rather die a meaningful death than to live a meaningless life."1

"No one is dying, Glee. You hear me?" The woman, the lead trauma surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital, started barking orders at those around her. "Let's go people! I need two units of blood with another on standby. You," she continued, looking at the lead Secret Service man who had his hand on a machine pistol semi-covered by his jacket, "keep your people out of our way, and stay out of my operating room." Now ignoring the President and his protection detail, she rapidly continued issuing commands to those around her in preparation for what she hoped would be life-saving surgery for three gunshot wounds.

Looking rather pale, Glee looked up at the woman and spoke. "Come on baby, don't fear the reaper, baby take my hand . . .."2

The lead Secret Service agent, having over twenty years with the agency and seven on Presidential protection detail, three with current commander-in-chief, turned to his charge who was moving at the same pace as the stretcher, though a few yards behind it.

"Mr. President, we really should get you out--"

"Charlie," interrupted the President, "if you want to head home so you can beat traffic and get there in time for Melanie's home-cooked meal, you go right ahead. I'm parking my ass in a chair and waiting for however long it takes to get that young man out of surgery." The look on the agent's face was one of astonishment as if he would ever leave his President's side in time of need. "The man risked his life for me, Charlie. He may well have saved my life. We're not going anywhere."

The agent nodded his understanding, then turned away and pressed a button on his secure, Bluetooth 2 encrypted earpiece, activating the microphone and giving orders to the rest of the detail on where to set up a perimeter.

Jayne McKendrick looked at her employer and smiled. He was unaware that he was being observed by his daughter's nanny, the two of them engaged in their weekly Sunday morning chess match. There wasn't quite the animation with Sara this morning, and Jayne didn't need to look at the date on the calendar to know why.

Four years ago today, then-nine-year-old Sara's mother, and Robert Gleason's wife of 11 years, was killed by a drunk driver. It was shortly thereafter that Jayne came into the employ of the Gleasons.

“Dad,” said Sara, her shoulder-length brown hair swaying back and forth as she shook her head at her father, incredulous at his apparent faux pas. “You're not supposed to make mistakes on purpose to let me win!”

Sara quickly captured his rook with her pawn, a smug, triumphant look about her that only teen girls can produce effortlessly.
