About the Author

Forward by by Chancellor Elyndra Vaelus, University of Anneanica

It is my great honor and privilege to introduce this remarkable story of Empress Hortensaloupe Agataronipoli Erugam-Maguire, a young woman of extraordinary courage and resilience who rose from the ashes of tragedy to become the beacon of hope for her people, the Enphaet.

The Enphaet, once proud inhabitants of a dying multiverse, found refuge in our universe under the leadership of Horti, who assumed the mantle of Empress after the tragic assassination of her mother. Inheriting a legacy of strength and wisdom, Horti faced the monumental task of relocating her people to a new home, demonstrating unparalleled determination and resourcefulness in the face of adversity.

The tale you are about to embark upon is a chronicle of Horti’s incredible journey and a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Enphaet. This saga captures the essence of our people's struggles and triumphs as we sought sanctuary in a foreign universe and attempted to rebuild our civilization amidst the unknown.

Tragically, the early collapse of our former multiverse led to the loss of countless lives and unleashed nightmarish creatures from the void. It is in this darkest hour that Horti's true mettle as a leader is tested. Under her guidance, our people banded together, united in purpose, to protect our new home and honor the memory of those we had lost.

This story serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance, the importance of friendship, and the necessity of standing up against the forces of darkness. Horti's tale is one of hope, as she defied all odds to secure the future of her people in a new and unfamiliar universe.

As the Chancellor of the University of Anneanica, I am deeply humbled to have witnessed the unfolding of this extraordinary narrative. May Horti's journey resonate with readers across the cosmos, inspiring generations to come with her unwavering courage, determination, and compassion.

Introduction

I was delighted Empress Hortensaloupe Agataronipoli Erugam-Maguire asked me to write this biographical trilogy following the return of her people from a dying multiverse. I met her when Craig Kargo, Emperor Kargo’s son, introduced her to his father. She impressed me then and has continued to impress me as the years have passed. One cannot mention Horti without speaking about Craig. Craig has grown into his role as Emperor and has shown his true mettle through the time he has known Horti. She is the only person I know who is more capable of attracting trouble than my good friend Craig Kargo.

The start of “The Last Hope” timeline overlaps with Book Nine of the Warlord and the Multiverse Series. This series is about a young woman attempting to save her people in a dying multiverse. It is in part in the same universe as the first series but diverges and converges with the universe of the Warlord and Multiverse series but can be read independently. For readers who have not yet read the Warlord and the Multiverse Series, I will summarize the salient points about the first series before you begin the books about Horti, hopefully without too many spoilers and excessive detail. Jason, like Horti, began on Earth in Perth in Western Australia.

On the verge of moving into residential care for the elderly, doctors diagnose Jason’s eighty-year-old wife with dementia. She commits suicide, and the police charge Jason with her murder.

Surprisingly, a battleship arrives with an invitation. His aunt, the Empress of an Empire two galaxies away, asks Jason to return to The Empire to help his grandfather. At eighty and in poor health, Jason struggles with the decision.

Jason faces enemies and constant threats as he struggles to adapt to the values and requirements of an advanced but different society. He must face his nemesis, a tyrant sowing an insurrection and intends to go to war against the Empire.

The Empire is sixty-five thousand years ahead of Earth. Artificial intelligence permeates every part of life. Education and health technology have advanced far further than we can imagine. People will live for tens of centuries unless killed in war or an accident. The Empire is wealthy and successful and spans hundreds of thousands of light-years.

The Empire faces a declining population. A traitor is slowly poisoning the Empire and wants revenge and ultimate power. The traitor will go to any lengths to achieve his aims, even ally himself with the bitter enemies of the Empire.

In the second book, the Mob, a people unknowingly invaded by aliens from another galaxy attack the Empire of Cassius. Jason’s forces assist the Empire in repulsing the Mob and then travel to the Mob’s worlds to free them of oppression. In this book, Jason encounters a species of sentient Apes and malicious Insects.

In the third book, Jason finally reaches the Empire of Cassius and has the opportunity to help free the Empire from those who wish to take over and save his grandfather. Jason again encounters insects and fights in a war instigated by the malicious species of insects.

In the fourth book, Jason begins a project at university that he discovers involves one of his own companies run by priests. A student in his group is of a royal family, held hostage after a coup, and asks Jason to assist her family and free her people. In this series, we encounter sentient tyrannosaurus rexes.

In the fifth book, Jason travels to the Azayal, a people more advanced than the Empire of Cassius, to further his education and discovers they face terrible dangers. His actions are critical to the outcome. We again encounter Ghouls, biological renegade AIs we first meet in book 2.

In the sixth book, Jason deals with difficulties faced by the Parzool, the sentient dinosaurs, and discovers a dragon species is behind the problems, the Gromelix. The war with the Ghouls concludes, and we learn more about an ancient people called the Una, energy beings in our universe and flying apes in another universe, and an ancient enemy called the Grork, who live as parasites on sentient snails. I mention the Grork as we meet them again in this series. Jason discovers more about his identity as an ancient person called the Uzliumbax.

The seventh book is written from the perspective of Jason’s granddaughter Chloe, the tale’s hero. We encounter the Destroyers who invade our universe every million years, kill all sentient species, and again encounter the Grork.

The eighth book returns to the tale from the perspective of Jason. In this book, the Destroyers surprise the Uzliumbax and begin their underhand and vicious attacks.

Cassius, the Emperor, Jason’s uncle, faces a wave of refugees and struggles to find a solution. He approaches Jason, who becomes involved and discovers a new branch of the Uzliumbax in a different galaxy and a civilization of sentient spiders.

Jason faces illness and kidnapping before he returns home to face an intergalactic attack from his new mother-in-law, a spider from a civilization called the Azloc. The Azloc are of vital importance in this story.

The Uzliumbax are returning from stasis, but the Destroyers kill many critical scientists and doctors, and Jason faces threats to his life from both Uzliumbax criminals, pirates, and the Destroyers.

In book nine, Jason starts the new curriculum from the Uzliumbax, his ancient people, and faces a devastating invasion from ancient enemies called the Gazronnaas. We don’t encounter them in this series, but they occupy Jason’s attention for most of book nine of series one and book one of series two. However, the Uzliumbax finally move from the dying universe Norbut 19, and we encounter these Uzliumbax. They need new bodies when they travel across the multiverse.

Prologue

Horti hated her new life, where every day was a nightmare. The last year was the worst year of her life. Her car accident left her with disfiguring burns on her chest that extended up the left side of her neck. She lost her right leg mid-thigh and struggled to adapt to an above-the-knee prosthesis. She even managed to ignore the alien invasions. She half hoped those invading aliens would kill her. Death would be a convenient release from everyday trials. She couldn’t adjust to the accident; how could she manage the changes that threatened her life? Earth was transitioning from business as usual to becoming a part of an alien civilization millions of years old.

* * *

They were times of change, uncertainty, insecurity, fear, and resistance by some to the impending changes. The majority were apathetic. They felt they could not grasp the scope of the change. A minority relished the challenge of change and massive new opportunities. Those that resisted change disappeared. Earth had become a tiny cog in the massive Uzliumbax Empire. While it was true Earth had joined the Empire, many knew Earth felt it had no choice. Earth could only deal with the threats of sophisticated alien enemies with the help of powerful friends and allies. The leaders of a fearful Earth embroiled in intergalactic conflict decided to join the house of Lord Kargo, which was part of the Empire of Cassius, a couple of galaxies away. The Cassius Empire joined the much larger and vastly more sophisticated Uzliumbax Empire a few years later. The Cassius Empire had only been sixty-five thousand years ahead of Earth. The Uzliumbax were millions of years ahead.

Hortense, or Horti as she was known to her friends, kept everything the same. She lived in a cocoon of self-preoccupation and denial, but deep down; she knew life must change. She wasn’t ready for change and was hanging on to her life by her fingernails. She was exhausted. How could she live a meaningful life in this new world she knew nothing about? Horti was tempted to give up and crawl into her shell.

The Uzliumbax Empire was restructuring Earth. They were doing it faster than it had ever been done previously. Two billion people from Earth went to different parts of the Uzliumbax Empire and billions of beings from the Empire replaced them on Earth. Most looked humanoid, though some had four arms; others were insects and spiders. There were even some that had wings, and others were sentient animals.

The news was vastly different. It contained current events on Earth and what was happening in the broader Empire, and everyone spoke Uzliumbax. Learning Uzliumbax was easy. There were booths in every suburb. You entered a booth, and it gave you an AI that sat in some weird dimension. It took half a minute. The next day you spoke Uzliumbax.

It was all too much for Horti. She didn’t want to battle to understand what was happening while she was in such an emotional hole. She had extensive surgery ahead of her to deal with her thick and ugly scars. The tight rope-like scars were tilting her head to the left. She hated the unsightly red scars on her chest and left breast. Four operations on her neck had helped a bit, but she knew she looked hideous.

Today she received a notification from the manufacturer of her hatchback. She must take it in to have a gas conversion. The Empire subsidized the work.

It was one more thing on top of her; it was yet another thousand dollars she must borrow from her parents. It was bad enough moving back home, but she hated being dependent on them for anything. It was so hard. Her parents looked after her following her discharge from hospital and subsequent rehabilitation and calmly dealt with her black moods. She didn’t deserve to be treated so well. Horti’s grandparents were equally generous with their time and helped her without question.

At least she worked and earned a living, though her boss was an underhanded greedy snake. He owned the company and squeezed everything out of her he could. She worked ridiculous hours, and her salary was mediocre. At this rate, she would never become independent and pay her parents back.

Horti returned to the car. Logically the conversion was a great idea. These incredible insects from the Collective created a gas-based fuel cell that didn’t damage the environment or contribute to global warming.

Perth converted to a new form of power generation that was safe and not harmful to the planet. The bugs were also cleaning the oceans. Next week the Empire was shifting the planet’s orbit to deal with global warming.

The car was the first direct way the changes directly impacted her. It was a nuisance.

No, it was the third way. Horti received an internal AI in a booth and a learning cube. The AI gave her a tutorial to learn to switch the cube on, and voila, the next day, she was speaking Empire Standard. She used the cube every night and learned a lot about the history of the Empire and what happened to Lord Kargo. She was starting to learn about the information technology systems of the Empire and artificial intelligence.

Horti shuddered to think about how much she needed to learn. Work would need to buy an AI to replace the computers and use entirely different programming methods. Work was in deep trouble, and they acted as if nothing was changing. They weren’t even talking about adapting to the new world they were living in. But neither was she. There was too much on her plate to plan beyond tomorrow.

The Naturalista

The group met secretly by secure holo-conference. They wore dark hooded cloaks; a hologram disguised their faces by creating a moving image mimicking their expressions. The device also altered their voices.

The general sat in her office at home on Dinnion Prime. She looked closely at the other seven waiting for her to speak.

“I welcome you to meeting number twelve thousand four hundred and nine of the Naturalista.

“We must change our plans and consider a different approach. As we were close, I know you are as frustrated as I am. The coup option is off the table. Since we joined the Uzliumbax Empire, everything changed.”

One of the robed figures interrupted her. “Leader, what happened in our negotiations with the Gazronnaas?”

“That is an excellent question; they did not turn out well. I will summarize the situation. I had several meetings with the Gazronnaas and reported they impressed me. They undertook to assist us and give us advanced technology and weapons from an ancient universe, and in return, we would grant them a planet and hand them our enemies,” the general explained.

“What was the problem?” Asked another of the robed figures.

“I felt uneasy about how they presented what they wanted to do here. The story they told was full of holes. They alleged they intended to use our captives as slaves,” said the general.

“I don’t understand,” said another. “What is the problem? Perhaps they do not use AIs as we do.”

“They are more ancient than us, and we saw they use AIs as crew and employ AIs as we do. They don’t need slaves any more than we do,” said the general.

The general sat back and frowned.

“They also wanted our education systems. They said it was to understand us better but wouldn’t give us their own in return.”

This time the general shook her head. “I knew something was wrong but didn’t know what it was. I arranged a further meeting, and I brought along several listeners. I wanted to hear what they were communicating with each other telepathically.

“What our listeners heard horrified me. The Gazronnaas is an ancient enemy of our people, and they aim to exterminate us. They wanted our people as experimental subjects so they could use us as they cannot live in our universe without environmental suits.”

“Why do they want our educational systems?” Asked another.

“They need our education as they struggle to adapt to this universe and don’t want to waste time researching how they can adapt here. They want to use us to get a leg up, and then they will eradicate us and all branches of the Uzliumbax, including the Destroyers and the Dinnion. They will also kill the Azloc. They see them as related to us.”

The General shuddered. “I found them initially convincing and persuasive.”

“Leader, do you know how many of them there are in our universe and how many ships they have?”

“The listeners tell me they occupied three planets in Bekta Delta. They are scouting this universe, looking for their enemies, and have six hundred ships. We don’t know the mix. They have some shipbuilding capacity. They have millions of people in Bekta Delta. More of them are expected from Norbut 19 as the universe there, as we know it, is rapidly contracting. They also have a transitional base in the universe Mespa 49.”

“Do they know to whom we are related?” Asked another cloaked figure.

“They know of the Destroyers, the Uzliumbax, and us and will eradicate all of us. They know the Azloc are related to us and intend to kill them. Am I not repeating myself?” The General asked, then added. “We know the Azloc have some Uzliumbax DNA, but we have not yet discovered how they are related to us and how they received some of our DNA. The listeners could not discover why the Gazronnaas were so determined to kill us all.”

“What do you intend to do with the information?” Asked another cloaked figure.

“I ordered the destruction of their fleet as soon as I returned to the flagship. They couldn’t damage our ships. We didn’t leave a single Gazronnaas alive.”

“Do the Uzliumbax know what happened?”

“I reported the encounter and covered our backs. Admiral Arsames debriefed me and approved my decision. I informed him we encountered the Gazronnaas, related how they tried to fool us, and told him our listeners confirmed they were bent on destroying us all. Our ancient enemy is here and wants to kill us all.”

“General, how does this affect us?”

“We have our agenda to pursue. The Gazronnaas will prove an excellent distraction. I have seen intelligence reports they targeted Porquenta and burrowed underground. That will distract the Emperor from what we do,” said the General.

“How do you suggest we amend our strategy?” Another asked.

We must find like-minded beings in every humanoid civilization and spread the word throughout the flat faces. We will keep the message simple. We will seek out others who know they are superior to the homogenized masses produced by the medical minions of our oppressors. Every society has an elite group that does not want their natural personality and nature to be homogenized and does not want to be slave workers in the Empire. We are the way we are meant to be, and our destiny is to rule. The others will bow down before our superior nature and serve us.”

“How do we go about it, leader?”

“The first step is to plan how we set up the organization to spread the word and organize other like-minded people,” said the General projecting the black three-dimensional symbol of the Naturalista above her hand. It was a pitch-black bird resembling a crow with its beak gripping a rat-sized six-legged animal.

The others returned the salute.

They commenced planning in earnest.

Chapter 1

The Joys of Work

Horti, using a forearm crutch, limped uncomfortably toward her work building. The building, also owned by her boss, was a beautiful piece of modern architecture, perfectly suited for her narcissistic boss, the company’s owner.

Derek, the snaky, sneaky weasel-faced cousin of her boss, walked surreptitiously out of the entrance. He looked both ways before crossing the road and scuttling away in the opposite direction. She didn’t think he noticed her. Horti had heard rumors over the years he was involved in shady activities. Derek was an underhand, stab-you-in-the-back piece of scum. She had known him at school, and nothing she heard about him changed her opinion. Derek would never maintain eye contact, couldn’t keep a job, and treated girlfriends abominably. She failed to understand how he survived university and got his degree.

She suspected her boss was a polished version of the same beast. He was personable and charming, but she never trusted him.

Horti was grateful her boss employed her after the accident. She told him she struggled in the first few months, but he pushed her to work long hours, and her pay didn’t reflect her efforts. Conrad acted as if he did her a great favor.

Horti had heard rumors from several sources Conrad had stabbed his original partner in the back. The split had been acrimonious. The partners had split, but Conrad had kept the company as the police had found child pornography on Conrad’s partner’s computer. She remembered that part of the story from the paper. Conrad and his partner started the company, manufacturing custom electronic chips and developing software.

Horti worked on the custom software side of the explosively growing international business. Horti never understood how Conrad financed its rapid development.

Horti sighed as she walked in through the electronic doors and waved to the receptionists.

———————

Midmorning, Horti was concentrating on the middle of her three screens when Conrad called her into his office.

It was a long walk to his office. Her stump was burning from the walk from the parking garage, and her back was aching. Conrad always called her when she was in the middle of something complex and never walked over to her desk to talk to her.

Conrad’s office was more ostentatious and pretentious than the other parts of the over-decorated office. He wore an impeccable bespoke Italian suit and a lustrous but understated silk tie. Horti couldn’t see Conrad’s shoes, but she was sure they were highly polished.

She chose not to sit as he had once again placed a chair without arms too far in front of his desk for her to be able to use the desk to help her get on her feet. She was increasingly convinced he was a psychopath and enjoyed subtly torturing her. He only used the armless chair when she came to the office.

“Agatha, I want you to visit the people from Beta Engineering. They are having some difficulty with your recent iteration of updates. Please make sure you go to their office. I want you to look after them like babies; they are one of our best clients.”

Conrad’s tone was pleasant and friendly. He had fooled her with his friendly manner at her employment interview. Under the surface, this pleasantly delivered instruction was a setup. He was deliberately needling her. Conrad knew Horti hated to be called Agatha. Beta Engineering was five floors up in an old building with steep stairs. There was no elevator. The stairs were a nightmare. She had to use her good leg to go up every stair. She held on to the rickety handrail to pull herself up. Going down, even with her stick’s help, was worse. She couldn’t find a way to safely go down such steep stairs The people at Beta Engineering knew Horti well and were happy to meet her in a coffee shop nearby. The first time she visited them, several staff had passed her on the stairs going up and were helpful and considerate.

Horti looked after Beta Engineering devotedly as she did all her clients.

She had asked Conrad several times to call her Horti as she preferred not to be called Hortense or Agatha. He smiled and nodded and chose to call her Agatha.

She chose not to react and briefly thought through her hypotheses.

On previous occasions, Conrad told her about Derek’s visits. Derek wanted to work with Conrad, but there was no available position. Derek had suggested Conrad get rid of Horti. Conrad told Horti exactly what Derek had suggested but told her he couldn’t find a reason to fire her.

Maybe he had changed his mind and had recently discovered a reason to get rid of her. Today, Conrad must be setting a trap. Creating a problem for someone was part of his modus operandi. He would use Derek to follow her. Derek wanted her job and had finally persuaded Conrad so Conrad would use Derek to do his dirty work.

Conrad had decided on a course of action and instructed her to do something she could not and would not do. There was no convincing rational decision to do as he suggested, and Conrad was no fool.

Horti toyed with going along with what her boss wanted her to do.

“Of course, Conrad, I will meet with them as requested. Do you know what the problem is?” Horti asked him.

Conrad explained.

Horti decided to make it more difficult for Conrad.

“Conrad, you remember when I came to work for you, I said I found it difficult to remember verbal instructions, and I was going to record them?”

Conrad frowned and nodded. Horti knew the last thing he wanted was to have his conversations recorded.

“You know I have continued to record your instructions from that time, including today?”

Conrad’s frown remained. It took him a while to nod.

“The people from Beta Engineering know of my disability and know their building does not conform with workplace disability legislation. I told you they meet with me at a coffee shop across the road.”

“Horti, we know your physical limitations, but we also know one must push oneself. You are improved considerably since you started here, and the first time you visited them. We try hard to look after our clients and make them feel special. I don’t ask very much of you. Please try to meet them in their workplace.”

Conrad smiled his predatory smile.

Horti looked at Conrad and smiled.

“Of course, boss, I always do my best!”

Conrad ruthlessly exploited her vulnerability and her work ethic, but Conrad hadn’t realized Derek couldn’t do her job. Horti knew he might have the qualifications but his work was slow and tenth-rate.

Derek was Conrad’s problem, not hers! Horti was on the way out.

Conrad looked uncertain for an instant. He frowned but then smiled.

Horti knew what the bastard was thinking. At first, he wasn’t sure if she would try climbing the stairs. That led to his uncertainty. Then he remembered the people from Beta Engineering carrying her down the stairs after she sat crying on the landing, her face bruised, and her knees bleeding after her fall.”

“Yes, boss,” said Horti. She turned slowly, noticing Conrad smiling and triumphantly pumping his arm, his fist clenched.

Chapter 2

Sweet Anticipation

Horti wearily dragged herself to her seat at the magnificent dining table in the family room in her parent’s house. Her parents and grandparents from both sides were sitting at the table, enjoying a pre-dinner drink.

“The day went exactly as I predicted. The clients were happy to meet in a private room in the coffee shop. That was a great idea, grandpa! I didn’t pay a cent to use it. Heather watched my back. Derek followed me as predicted. I made sure I scheduled the meeting in the afternoon so I could come home after the meeting,” said Horti.

“Tomorrow morning, he will fire you; make sure you call the lawyer into his office when he tells you he is unhappy and wants to meet you. You are entitled to bring along someone to support you. Colin Rinehart will join and represent you. He is your age and was at your school. You can call him your supporter. He said he knows you well. He is an excellent lawyer and highly intelligent. I use him if litigation is likely as he presents very well in court and is nimble on his feet,” said Grandpa Chuck. “Don’t underestimate Colin. He is a nice guy but is also a valuable asset to our firm.”

“How do you want me to play it?” Horti wearily asked. “I remember him; he was a likable guy at school.”

“Leave it to Colin. That is not all. Today, I spoke to my golf buddy, who’s a judge, and told him what was happening. George is fond of you and would ensure you get looked after. I was pleased to find out he knows Conrad well and was not impressed with his previous underhanded dealings, most of which played out in his court.”

“That is excellent,” said Horti. “I remember George. He tells a great story and is an amusing man. I am relieved it is all coming to a head,” said Horti. “Grandpa, I am pleased you are on my side. I value your support.”

“Horti, you will rarely have such good luck. Make sure you control your emotions as it plays out,” said Grandpa Chuck, dad’s father, managing partner of one of the biggest law practices in the city. “I want Conrad to be the one that makes the mistakes.”

“Horti, how do you feel about what is happening?” Vivian, Horti’s mother, a clinical psychologist, asked.

“Horti glared at her mother. What do you think? I feel wonderful and excited to be fired. I feel great about borrowing money from you and having blown all prospects of paying it back. All I can think about is how I can ever find my feet. You guys are wonderful, but I feel terrible about my situation. I feel happy and relieved to be out of the clutches of Conrad. He is one of the cruelest people I have ever met. Yet at the same time, despite knowing it is irrational, I feel guilty about not being able to negotiate the stairs and not at least trying to negotiate them. My rational mind knows I couldn’t get down those steep steps without help. On the other hand, I hate being a cripple. On days like today, I loathe myself. I hate being dependent on all of you. After this, I will have no job and depend on the largesse of the family once more. Mum, you ask how I feel. Who is going to want me? I will live a lonely life.”

Horti blinked away several tears, then walked over to the counter, grabbed a couple of tissues, and wiped her face.

Horti turned to her Grandfather. “One other thing; I think is important, Grandpa – I told the client my boss wanted me to visit them in their office. I said I would do it if they felt it was necessary or important to do so, but I would need help getting back down the stairs again,” Horti explained.

“They refused to allow me to visit them upstairs. They insisted we meet as usual in the nearby cafe. I hadn’t even told them about using a private room.”

Horti turned back to her mother. “I worked so hard for that bastard. I sorted out lots of the kinks in the software, and I know the clients like me. Despite my painstaking work, Conrad never acknowledges it and subtly hurts me as often as possible, but he does it in the nicest way possible. He pays me the least of those at my level and expects me to work overtime without payment. He says it is time in place of the time I have been off having operations or going for appointments. It’s rubbish. I have used sick leave and recreational leave time when I needed treatment. No matter how long I worked after hours, he never let me use the extra time worked for appointments. Time in lieu only goes one way; his way.”

After dinner, Horti went to her room to dress for her date with Jimmy Robson. What kind of pitiful woman was she to go out with a useless piece of shit like Jimmy? Horti didn’t like her answer.

“Horti, Jimmy is at the door for you,” her mother said.

As usual, he was half an hour late. She was sick of him.

Horti walked to the front door and made a major effort not to limp.

“Hi Horti,” he said, “let’s hit the road. I want to take you to a great restaurant this evening. Move it; our booking is in ten minutes.”

Jimmy led the way to his fifteen-year-old sedan.

Yup sounds like McDonald’s again! Horti looked at Jimmy carefully. Undoubtedly he is on something, and he also stinks of brandy. The car is filthy, and it reeks. It’s a pigsty. I am not going back to his place, no matter what. If he hits me, I will deal with it. Let him try something! I am over it!

McDonald’s it is. Drug dealing night again. I am sick of this shit.

As usual, Jimmy opened his door and walked into McDonald’s without looking back. Horti boiled. As she walked through the door, she looked up. One of Jimmy’s cronies had spray-painted the security cameras. It was their characteristic modus operandi.

Jimmy sat at a table not visible from the kitchen and by inside cameras.

“Sweetie, get us some burgers and fries; I have a couple of big deals to negotiate; I am making sure we have a great time, and I am looking after our future,” said Jimmy. “stay near the counter for the next five minutes.”

Horti was not happy as she walked to the counter. She saw a couple of gangster wannabes as high as kites stroll to Jimmy’s table. Jimmy passed around a small bottle of brandy; after the money changed hands, he pulled out several small bags from his pocket.

She waited until the amateur-league gangsters left and went back to the table.

“Sweetie, you’ll come over tonight,” he said commandingly.

His voice cracked.

“No, you pitiful asshole, you can go home and screw yourself; you are a fuckwit, alcoholic, drug addict, try-hard, and a half-brain. You are a half-baked useless passant of an aspirant drug dealer who will spend most of his life in jail or on the streets. Get a job and get off your fat butt. I am not taking your shit anymore. We are over—finito—no more. You are also a two-timing unreliable parasite, so cheap you can’t even pay for your miserable fucking hamburger. There is no us any longer. Go and screw that whore Ruby, but keep that puny prick for her while she uses you and…”

He slapped her face.

Horti whipped around and slammed her fist into his nose. She felt a satisfying crunch, but her fist hurt like crazy. The pain was nothing compared to the satisfaction. Horti pulled her fist ready for another punch.

Jimmy’s nose was a gusher.

Several people laughed.

Jimmy was incensed. He tried to backhand her. She jumped and leaned back. He missed. Horti lost her balance and fell backward, turning, hitting her cheek on the table diagonally behind her.

A large man and his equally large friend dashed over to the table. One of them helped her up, and the other restrained Jimmy.

The police arrived surprisingly quickly. They searched Jimmy and arrested him. The men turned out to be undercover cops. Horti saw a pocket full of bags taken from each pocket, and the police officers found many more bags in his backpack.

Jimmy was an idiot.

When Horti returned home after making a detailed statement, she had a full-blown black eye on the left, and her face was swollen.

No one was up.

Horti had another shower before she went to bed and slept the sleep of the dead.

The next morning Horti was up early and met her father, Brendan at breakfast.

“Well, Horti, that is a beauty,” said her father.

Horti grinned and turned up her palms. “You should see the other guy! I whacked Jimmy a good one before I lost my balance and fell banging my face on a table on the way down.”

Brendan was a sensitive, trustworthy, and decent human being. She needed a boyfriend with his or her grandfather’s characteristics. She would rather die a miserable spinster than hook up with another derelict boyfriend. She didn’t need the Jimmy’s of this world.

Brendan waited for her to continue.

“Dad, since the work issues arose I realized some hard truths about myself in the last few days. I am small; my face is ordinary, I am plump, I have unattractive burns on my chest and a high prosthesis. I am not athletic, and I am unattractive to the opposite sex. I allowed myself to be exploited and have rotten self-esteem about my appearance but not my intellect. The accident made everything worse. I am a wreck. Every day I battle to cope,” Horti explained. “I have always used my intellect to cope, but the last year drained all my reserves.”

“I understand. Your family knows how you feel about your appearance and how the accident impacted on you. What novel understanding of your situation have you reached?”

Brendan always asks hard questions and focuses on learning something.

“I made some decisions recently and started implementing them. I decided I was not going to accept an exploitative boss. I also dumped Jimmy last night at McDonald’s. I whacked him first and missed backhanding me. Fortunately the police were there undercover and arrested him. They found lots of drugs on him. The last thing I heard after my statement was complete and I was signing it was they were going to search Jimmy’s place. They had obtained a search warrant.

“I thought, as a pleasant policeman was driving me back last night, I don’t have to accept any old job. Also, I would rather be single than compromise and stay in a relationship with someone like Jimmy,” Horti added decisively.

“We can try and find the top plastic guy and see what he can do with your neck and chest,” said Brandon, her father.

“Dad, we already have the best doctors. I also consulted the best plastic surgeons in the eastern states. They don’t have anything more to offer.”

“Are there better prostheses?” Brandon asked.

“Lots of work is being done, but prostheses way above the knee are hard to manage no matter what rehabilitation you do. I struggle to walk. I feel terribly unstable on uneven surfaces. I find going down any type of stairs with or without crutches is a nightmare. I avoid stairs like the plague.

“My prosthesis is so high it doesn’t grip well, and I can’t stabilize my leg well enough to feel secure. My stump hurts every day despite doing everything I can to manage it.

“I would love to have a good husband and children of my own. I look at myself in the mirror and ask myself, who will want me? I want someone I find attractive and who is a decent human being. I don’t have a pool of admirers from whom I have a wide choice. Jimmy is the only person who ever approached me for a date. Both you and mum are much taller than me. None of the grandparents are short like me. Why do I look as I do, and what can I do to improve myself? My grandparents look young. They are all taller than me and are good looking. I am the odd shaped dwarf of the family. I am also cursed with the consequences of the accident.”

“These are big questions, and I suspect we will not find satisfactory answers in the next ten minutes. I want to spend some time thinking about your questions,” said Brendan. “Can you manage if Conrad fires you today?”

“I sure can, it will be a relief. I am emotionally prepared for today. I prepared for today since the second day at work. It will be one more toxic thing out of the way before I plan the rest of my life. I have tons of support, and I don’t intend to harm myself, in case you are worried.”

“A police friend called and warned me Jimmy may get bail,” said Brendan.

“I told the police Jimmy told me he has a passport hidden at one friend and a fake one at another,” said Horti.

“I hope the police find enough to keep him in jail.”

“Of course they will give him bail. It takes ten murders to keep someone in prison. I need to get grandpa to organize a restraining order to keep him away from me when they release him,” said Horti. “I am going to my room to give grandpa a call, then I am off to battle.”

——————

After she returned from work Horti relaxed cheerfully into upright leather desk-chair next to a sofa. She had her own side table.

Vivian her mother looked at her inquisitively.

“May I have a gin and tonic? I will fill you in about the day when everyone is here. Grandpa Chuck will be able to tell us a whole lot more. He said he was going to be busy in court getting all sorts of orders,” said Horti smiling. “I am much relieved it is over.”

Horti turned to Vivian. “How was your day mum?”

Chapter 3

The Take-Down

As Horti made serious inroads into her second drink before her grandparents and father arrived and sat at the table. She moved to the table and smiled at all of them.

Horti nodded to Grandpa Chuck.

Brendan caught her attention. “Horti, tonight, after dinner, your grandparents want to bring you up to date on some important family history. Tomorrow they want you to invite your friends for dinner, and they want them to stay afterward for a discussion with all of us. Please get in touch with your friends before we eat in in approximately half an hour. It is vitally important. I can’t tell you more, as I know no more. Move!”

Horti nodded and went to her room to make the calls.

Her friends enjoyed meals at her house and were happy to be invited and participate in the family discussion.

Horti returned to the family room and nodded when her father and grandparents looked at her.

“They will be here tomorrow by five thirty. They were much less curious than I was about the impending discussions. They haven’t seen how somber you all are. Serious faces all around is a rare event in this house even though I believe I am the first family member to have been fired from any form of work,” said Horti.

“Grandpa Chuck, do you want to talk about what happened today?” Horti asked.

“Yes, let me fill you in on the day’s events,” said Grandpa Chuck.

“The interview in the office went down as predicted. Conrad acted like he didn’t want Colin present, but we could see he didn’t give a damn!”

“How could you see Grandpa? Did Colin have a video camera?”

“Yes, Horti, he did, and so did you in the broach your grandmother gave you. We had several more hidden in his room for several months.”

“Why grandpa, that seems excessive?”

“When you started talking about him and his behavior, it rang alarm bells, and I wanted to protect you. I know the types! I investigated Mr. Conrad Jordi Weir. In my previous practice, I had several partners who were like him, and they caused endless trouble. They caused staff problems, some were into drugs, and one of them tried to embezzle money from the firm. After several months of investigation, I turned over what I had found to the police, and they have been running an operation for the last three months.”

“Grandpa, this must have cost you a fortune!” Horti exclaimed.

As he so often did, Chuck sat back and interlaced his fingers over his stomach.

“Horti, I continued for as long as I did as I knew I struck a goldmine of crime,” said Chuck smiling. “After he fired you, he exchanged your hard disk for another and gave instructions to wind up the company and to set up another in its place, but set up an offshore company to own and control it. He then began a series of highly illegal bank transfers. We guessed he would do to you as he had done to his ex-partner, and when the police arrested him and took away your computer as they did with all of them, they will find something incriminating, we are sure.”

“Conrad always was a sneaky bastard. I hope they find the sources of his endless capital,” said Horti. “The business is profitable but not profitable enough to pay for our rapid development. He makes sure we own all the buildings that house our operations,” said Horti.

“The police also raided his house. When the police arrested him, they charged him with making illegal currency transfers. He will soon face many more charges, but he doesn’t know that yet. The police agreed to drop his current charges if he settles with you. His lawyer will say it is cheap and believe he can get out of jail time. Once he settles, they will hit him with the drugs and money laundering charges and several other charges related to what he did to his partner,” said Chuck.

“How do you know all this?” Horti asked.

“The police rarely keep lawyers updated, but I provided them enough information to convict Conrad of numerous crimes. The police, as a consequence, briefed me on each stage of the investigation and told me what they found.”

“Grandpa, what can you tell us about what the police know?” Horti asked.

“They know Derek is a regional drug distributor and Conrad is a dealer to the rich and famous. Conrad launders money through his international companies on behalf of a drug cartel, Derek, and himself. Derek got him involved. Let me hand you over to Millie.”

Millie nodded and took a breath. “Seven months ago, two of my client banks contacted me to look at trading and money transfers they were convinced were crime-related and part of a massive money laundering operation. Conrad was at the center of the activity. I contacted the Feds and the tax guys on behalf of the banks.”

“Conrad was a worse scumbag than I suspected,” said Horti.

“The Feds were already involved through Grandpa, and the tax people tagged along. They unraveled an organization involving every state and the sites of every overseas operation. The bank retained me to deal with the offshore and international banks and untangle the account numbers. My people tracked down billions of dollars Conrad laundered and converted into assets and billions in cash scattered between fifteen banks. Today the FBI raided his companies in the US and Scotland Yard did the same in the UK. Plenty happened here.

“Today, hundreds of raids occurred concurrently around the country. Arrests included many top members of a mainland Chinese Cartel who met with Derek, Conrad, and several other groups from the eastern states.

“The police mopped them up. The police launched a further series of simultaneous raids in one hundred and fifty locations. They seized seven tons of crystal methamphetamine and tons of other drugs. It was the most successful police operation ever. Remarkably, the police managed to keep their investigation hidden from the criminals.”

Millie nodded to Chuck, who once again took the floor.

“It will hit the press tomorrow. What we have told you tonight is most of what we know and can tell you. From tomorrow we will find out a lot more. I suggest you keep any questions until tomorrow. By that time, Millie and I will not be as constrained as to what we can say.”

“Grandpa, you, and Grandma have done a fantastic job protecting my back and unraveling an international crime cartel and money laundering operation. Thank you both for not bringing me into it as an undercover person. I appreciate your effort to ensure I won’t be a witness and a target,” said Horti gratefully.

——————————

After dinner the following night, the dinner including her friends. Horti briefed her friends on what happened at work and with Jimmy. Horti then asked her grandparents. “Let’s get into the stuff you want to talk about this evening I am sure we all want to hear what you want to say,” said Horti.

Aubrey, Heather and Sammy, Horti’s lifelong friends looked at Horti’s grandparents.

“A year after the American Civil War, James and I awoke in a hotel in New York. We were young adults. Neither of us could recall our past. James had plenty of money on him, and we both had several suitcases of clothing. We decided to investigate further,” said Jenny, Horti’s maternal grandmother, smiling at Horti and her friends.

“That is bizarre,” said Horti.

“We went downstairs, were greeted by name, and ushered to our table for breakfast. We discovered the people there were well-to-do travelers. We were seated with another couple, Chuck, and Millie. The server said they were our good friends with whom we arrived the previous evening.”

Jenny frowned before continuing.

“They didn’t recognize us.”

The group listened raptly.

Jenny paused, tapping lightly on the table with a finger as if she was keeping time with music, and looked upwards.

“A man was playing the piano in the corner of the room. It was a cheerful tune, but the music was completely unfamiliar. I had never heard a piano play, but I knew what a piano was.”

Jenny frowned and looked at Chuck. He smiled and grasped her hand.

“Chuck looked as puzzled as I was, so I decided to take a chance and told him they probably didn’t remember anything before that morning either.

“We confessed to each other we remembered nothing before that day. We all realized it was as if we had only been created that morning filled up with information and knowledge but with no memory of our pasts. We only knew that we had a mission but not what it was.”

“Grandma, you guys are much older than I thought. Perhaps you come from somewhere else; no one lives so long. You all must be at least a hundred and seventy, and none of you look old,” Horti remarked.

“Yes, Horti, we realized the same a hundred years ago. We agreed to return to our rooms, inventory everything we had, and meet again in two hours. We were financially comfortable, so we decided to attend university to help us integrate into society. We discovered how difficult it was going to be for the women.”

“This is an incredible tale,” said Heather Merthorus. Heather was a tall strikingly good looking blonde who worked in public relations.

“The men met with the president of Columbia. He was working on admitting women to a newly established college for women. We women decided to go to Columbia, but dressed as men. We believe the President of Columbia suspected that is what we did, but no one ever confronted us.”

Horti laughed. “I find it hard to imagine my grandmothers as men!”

Jenny smiled before moving on. “We bought a house close to the university. We all applied to work in a bank after we completed our studies. During our time in the bank, we heard news of a small bank going bankrupt as the owner had a serious gambling problem. We acquired the bank and expanded it throughout the USA. It is one of the most successful American banks, and we remain major shareholders. We withdrew from management and the board when we felt it was big enough to go public and when we had top-level management in place.”

“Grandma, did you discover your mission?”

“Yes, but only a small part of it,” said Jenny.

“When neither of us fell pregnant, we realized we had never had periods. Recently we discovered neither grandfather produced sperm. This saddened us. One morning forty years ago, all four of us woke with the same task. We were to adopt two children, one male, and one female. We even knew their names and where they were to be found.”

“This tale becomes weirder and weirder,” said Aubrey Astran another lifelong friend of Horti’s. He also worked in the software industry but in cybersecurity.

“We adopted your parents. They grew up close together, and neither was interested in anyone else, and they married each other. Horti, you were born a year after they married. Both parents subsequently inexplicably became sterile.”

Horti looked at her parents. They raised their eyebrows and shrugged.

“Two days ago, we woke and knew we must move to Dinnion prime, and we were to live and study with the Dinnion.”

“Grandma, that is a shock. When must you go?”

“It was not specified,” said Jenny. “We must study farming.”

Horti laughed. “That is weird! From banking to farming, that is an extraordinary leap.”

“Horti, two days ago, your father and I woke and knew we were to go along with our parents,” said her mother.

“What should I do?” Horti asked.

“That, among other things, is what I want to talk about with you and your friends,” said Chuck. “Heather I would like you, Aubrey and Sammy to come along with us. Talk to your parents. I want to know what they want to do,” said Chuck. “Meet with us again tomorrow night and we will discuss the decision further.”

“What will happen with my case and all the rest of it, Grandpa? Won’t it all take some time.”

“Normally, yes, but yesterday the courts throughout the planet introduced Empire law after we received new legal AIs. When I got to my office this morning, the police called to say Collective investigators had done brain dumps on Conrad and Derek, among others. The court AI judge found them guilty and sentenced them. They are en route to Porquenta, who will decide if they can be salvaged.”

“I like that way of operating. It is fast and decisive,” said Horti.

“Their sentence triggered judgment on your case. The AI judge awarded you a small fortune, which I have invested along with your settlement from the accident. They look at the assets of crime differently from the way we used to. You are the only known injured party, and your descriptions of how he treated you despite your disabilities triggered damages payments.”

Heather hugged Horti. “Well done Horti!”

Horti grinned and turned back to Chuck.

“What is Porquenta, and what will he do?” Horti asked.

“Porquenta is a massive AI integrated with a planet. He can salvage and manage many criminals, but those he cannot, he terminates,” explained Chuck.

“I cannot imagine that pair reforming,” said Horti.

“The Empire takes a tough line on drug dealers,” said Chuck.

“I am relieved the Empire will ship the criminals elsewhere. What happens to the rest of the money?”

“As I discovered the crime, as did Millie independently, the judge awarded us a reward. The judge also gave the police service and tax people a healthy chunk of money. We are as impressed as you are by this method of approaching justice.”

“That is excellent. Tomorrow I can go to the gym and twiddle my thumbs,” said Horti.

“No, Horti,” said her father, “there is a Dinnion recruiting office nearby. We would like you to go there on our behalf and on behalf of your friends and find out what we must do to migrate to study and work there. I don’t know if they will take you as you have your issues, but you might as well find out, and I hope you can ask if they would accept your friends.”

“It all seems such a rush. Why must I go tomorrow?” Horti asked.

“We need to know what the situation is before we meet again tomorrow. I booked you an appointment at 8:30 tomorrow morning. They have parking next to the office.”

Horti was upset. Her parents were prepared to go without her, as were her grandparents. She couldn’t bear to think her friends could leave her behind.

She couldn’t imagine going to an entirely different place. How would she manage? It was hard enough in a familiar environment.

Horti needed her parents and her grandparents. They were a close family. She could not imagine how she could cope if they weren’t around. She could buy herself a small place, but she would miss everyone terribly. However, she would manage if she had to. She might not have a choice; they had a mission and had to go even if they left her behind. She wondered how often they would visit. The Dinnion lived many galaxies away. It might be a one-way trip, and they couldn’t return.

Today she discovered the Uzliumbax made things happen suddenly and quickly. Maybe things would become harder. How was she going to re-educate herself? Everyone was going to have to do fifteen years in the military. What would happen to her? She was in trouble no matter what.

If she went to the Dinnion, they could have stairs everywhere, even in building passageways. What if the city was all up and down like San Francisco? Why did the family not watch TV? Everything she knew was second-hand knowledge.

Horti absent mindedly bade farewell to her friends went to bed. Her mind was churning. She slept restlessly. Her dreams were dominated by stairs, her burns, and her leg. As she dragged herself out of bed, she remembered her dream. It was of saying goodbye repeatedly.

Horti sobbed, heartbroken.

Chapter 4

Recruitment

Horti parked in the empty car park and walked ten meters to the recruitment office. She was early but was happy to wait. She had dressed carefully. Horti covered her scars with makeup and tried hard not to limp. She wanted to make a good impression and see if there was a remote possibility they could take her. Not that she wanted to go, but she wanted to have the option.

The waiting room had comfortable seats, but the chairs had no arms. There was no one to meet her. Horti sat in the corner so she could use the wall to help herself stand. A young woman opened the door at the back of the room.

“Horti?”

Horti nodded. The woman was well-dressed and pretty, but her mouth protruded cat-like. It wasn’t flat like a Persian cat but protruded less than most cats. Undeniably it was a small snout.

“Yup, I am early. I am happy to wait.”

“There is no need for that; come through. Horti, you will do your assessment in a simulator. You can call me when you have finished.”

Horti was a little taken aback.

“I came on behalf of my family looking to study on Dinnion Prime. I came to find out information for them. I hoped to speak to someone who could give me some basic information.”

“Horti, let us begin again. My name is Helax Drosselmata. You are the first person to visit this office. I will do my best to meet your needs. Your father indicated you were representing your family and friends, some of whom would be interested in studying on Dinnion Prime. Is that correct?”

Horti nodded.

“I am here to do as your patriarch suggested. A powerful AI runs the process. The AI has had special training to meet the needs of potential recruits to the Dinnion Regency. The AI will answer your questions. Have you allocated sufficient time?”

“Helax, I have the whole day and every day if necessary.”
