The Team Manager Series

Team Manager SWISH! Underdeveloped and extremely near-sighted sophomore Dennis Enders is recruited to manage a new girls' basketball team at their school in Bartley, Iowa. The girls adopt him readily and his gentle nature, kindness, and vulnerability make him an instant favorite. They can't believe he was overlooked and ignored for nine years in school. But bootleggers, drug dealers, rapists, and kidnappers all seem to have it out for Dennis and members of his team. They survive in a world rife with danger and learn intimacy and love from and for each other. It’s a timeless story of the reluctant hero who is always being picked on and shunned but finds the character and courage to stand up to the bullies and to protect his growing harem of young women. In this classic trope High School Sophomore Dennis Enders, the near-sighted shrimp who was abused as a manager for the JV basketball team, comes into his own as manager of the newly formed girls' basketball team. What's not to like about one shrimp geek with thick glasses tossed in with a dozen tall athletic girls at the peak of their teen hormones?

Team Manager SPRINT! Basketball season was very good to Dennis. Despite his short stature and coke-bottle glasses, the girls' basketball team fell in love with him and have all claimed him as their boyfriend. But that was yesterday. Today starts track season. Dennis has more challenges to meet, winning the confidence of the track team, picking up the pieces of other lives, stopping an unbalanced younger geek, and holding down a summer job. In the midst of that, he receives a remarkable gift and discovers he's grown.

Team Manager COACH! Dennis is a junior and is taking as many college credit classes as he can cram into his schedule. What's more, his responsibilities in the Athletic Department keep growing. How did a hundred kids show up on the track for his conditioning exercises? And who ever heard of coaches getting in shape? And why did he never notice what a fox Coach Graves was before? And still, the crew is holding together, and the team is headed for another fantastic season. But what has happened to make the revived and winning boys' basketball team suddenly fall apart? Could it have to do with the proposed new athletic pavilion? Maybe it's just too much pressure!

Team Manager CHAMP! The Angelines are on a winning streak with a perfect season going when they get news that will change the entire coaching structure of the team. Can Dennis handle being ‘the man in charge?’ Ardith finds a new opportunity and it could be the means for the entire crew to stay together—with her as a part of it. But until then, with the District Attorney investigating the morals of Bartley School System, everyone needs to keep a low profile. Not exactly easy when a corporate rivalry threatens to upend everything the Angelines and Dennis have worked for.

Chapter 1

THE WHITE FARMHOUSE with colonial blue trim looked pristine and inviting. The yard was manicured and the hedges were trimmed. The barn and equipment shed had fresh coats of barn red rubberized paint. The field was green with growing timothy that would soon be ready for the second cutting. The first cutting of 4,000 bales was in and half the bales were still stacked on a pallet bed east of the barn, ready to be shipped—a silver tarp was tied over the towering layers of hay to keep rain off of them.

Dennis’s girlfriends had helped with the baling and worked hard on stacking, but they were assisted throughout the day by a dozen other farmers who managed the stacking that rose fifteen layers high. It looked impressive—which was the intent.

Dennis watched a real estate service erect the for sale sign out by the road. Then he went into the house and joined his girlfriends and others in finishing the trim paint throughout. Tomorrow, they would come through the house one last time to remove the last vestiges of tape and paper from the walls, then carpet layers would come in on Wednesday. The first official open house for the property was to be Sunday.

Everyone worked quickly and quietly at their sad task. Abe Abernathy had passed in his sleep on June 30th. Lila had moved almost at once to an assisted living facility in County Seat. The crew had spearheaded the full clean-up and conditioning of the property for the sale, hoping to get the widow top dollar for her property. Mid to late summer was a good time for the property to be listed for sale.

Dennis had farmed the property, maintained the equipment, and supervised the painting as part of his summer job, paid for by the combined men’s group from the three churches in town. The women’s group had checked in on the girls who were working to provide meals and cleaning for the Abernathys, so they could stay in their home as long as possible. Just a couple of days before he passed away, Abe and Lila had sat on the front porch, looking out at their home in its pristine condition, holding hands.

The funeral had been in the Lutheran Church and Peg had sung a beautiful anthem.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.

They’d accompanied the casket to the cemetery where Abe was laid to rest in a spot where he could see across the schoolyard to his long-time home. And at the graveside, Peg had sung “Amazing Grace.”

They finished their work for the day and headed to their homes to shower and have dinner before they went back to the school for the evening workout. The July temperatures were just too high in the afternoon to hold comfortable workouts, no matter how people dressed. The temperature had hit 90 in mid-afternoon and was still close to 80 degrees.

The first year girls’ softball team had finished their season the first week of July with an eleven and nineteen record. All told, they considered it to be a pretty good season for their first time playing in the high school circuit. The boys were still in competition with baseball, carrying a twenty-two and four record into the substate semi-final the coming weekend. Baseball had always been a positive sport at Bartley, even when the basketball team lost every year.

With the softball diamond empty, workouts were now being held there to get a little farther from the construction site for the new athletic pavilion. Even in the heat, people showed up for the nightly workouts. Not all people came every night. But nightly attendance averaged close to a hundred. It was still considered as having a positive effect on the community, even by those who attended only once a week.

Dennis and his crew of cheerleaders led the exercises to music piped over the loud speaker system at the field. Two things were consistent about the workouts. The cheerleaders had taken the workouts on as part of their responsibility. Two had graduated in May, but five more had joined the group to try out for the team. Janet had shifted into cheerleader mode as soon as the softball season had ended and was treating July as audition month. The other thing that was consistent was the attendance of all Bartley’s serious athletes. If there was an athlete who wanted a place on any team and wasn’t actively engaged in a game at the time, he or she was at the workout.

That included the scandal-ridden boys’ teams. There had been a huge debate among the coaches and on the school board regarding how the boys would be treated for the coming school year. A few hardliners wanted them banned from sports altogether. Others said they’d already suffered enough and had acted nobly in defending their sisters and girlfriends. It was a hotbed of conflict in the town and everyone had an opinion.

Levi Goodman, Si and Janice’s father, had found an unexpected ally in John Armor, who argued that the boys had been put in an impossible position and may have made bad decisions, but were generally innocent. Si had been the only Wolverine actually charged with misdemeanor assault. After Donnie Oswald identified his assailants, all six of the Bulldogs were charged and one faced a felony assault charge if the judge ruled he could be tried as an adult.

Ultimately, the school put all the involved athletes on probationary status, clearing them to participate in school sports, but warning that any infraction of strict guidelines would result in immediate suspension, both from sports and from school. Every one of them participated in the workout every evening, with focus and determination.

Among them was Donnie Oswald, who had been the worst injured Wolverine when he faced six of the Bulldogs by himself. He had started working out with Dennis as soon as he got out of the hospital, though having his arm in a cast and his jaw wired shut affected how well he could do the exercises. Still, he’d made remarkable progress and was determined to return to active participation.

“Are you ready for next week?” Renée Lambert asked Dennis after the workout. The junior high coach and all-round assistant looked exceptionally good in her workout clothes, Dennis thought. Perhaps not as young as Coach Ardith, but still a fine-looking woman. She taught PE and sex ed in the junior high.

“Are we crazy?” he laughed. “I’m just glad you aren’t asking me to do this on my own. With you and Coach Ardith and Coach Pat and Coach Janet all participating, I feel like I might not be completely overwhelmed.”

“This is going to put us way ahead in scoping out the talent for this year’s team,” Ardith said as they walked toward the school. The crew followed close behind. They were among those privileged to use the school locker room and showers because of the work they’d been doing. Not only had they worked with the Abernathys, but they’d managed preparation of the sports fields for fall. Mr. Samuels mowed the baseball and softball diamonds, but he wasn’t the one who’d be maintaining the sports fields and school grounds this fall. The school system was actually hiring a grounds keeper this year. When he wasn’t busy outside the buildings, he would be an assistant janitor inside. Or she. No one knew yet who would be hired.

“And it’s all legal according to the rules, right?” Dennis asked for assurance.

“We’ve checked up one side and down the other,” Ardith said. “The program is based on the same activity of some of the biggest schools in the state. They just don’t have too many Class 2A schools that devote the resources to it.”

“I’m hoping to see some future volleyball players, too,” Pat said. “This month-long girls’ sports camp spans everything. We have nearly fifty girls signed up from grades six through eight. And fifteen new freshmen girls, as well. With our basketball and volleyball teams, we can just about count on controlling the chaos.”

“And the cheerleaders. I’m excited to be a part of it,” Dennis said. “Brenda and I have done a lot of studying this summer on physical training for younger female athletes. We really need to be careful that we don’t put too much stress on young bones and developing bodies.”

“Well, Monday afternoon we’ll see what happens. Have you noticed the eighth grade girls—I mean freshmen now—in your workout sessions? They so much want be like their role models!” Renée said.

“We feel the pressure,” Natalie said as they headed into the locker rooms to shower.

“Set a good example,” Ardith laughed.

“Hello, young women! Welcome to the first Angelines summer sports camp. I’m Coach Dennis and I get to lead you in conditioning and skills training. But don’t go thinking you’re going to be facing some dumb guy all day. If you look around me, you’ll see our returning Angeline varsity volleyball and basketball teams and returning varsity cheerleaders. These are our coaches. They’ve decided to adopt a college form of address and you can call them Coach Ardith for basketball and track. Coach Pat for volleyball. Coach Renee, who many of you already know from PE. And Coach Janet for cheerleading and softball. I’m the student assistant coach for basketball and sports conditioning. And with me is my partner, Coach Brenda, who is interning from DMACC. And our first lesson is to learn the answer to a very important question. Who are we?”

“Angelines!” the combined varsity and coaches shouted. A few of the kids joined.

“Let’s try again. Who are we?” Dennis shouted.

“Angelines!” yelled the girls. Camp was underway.

“I’m exhausted!” Amy said as the crew all collapsed at her house. “Don’t look at me for sex tonight!”

“You must really be exhausted,” Gransy said, coming into the room with bowls of snacks. “Well, I’m available, Dennis,” she added.

“Gransy!” chorused all the girls.

“Uh… To cook dinner,” Gransy laughed. “Start with your appetizers and we’ll have it on the table in half an hour.”

“I can’t believe we’re riding herd on a hundred little girls!” Lana said.

“There’s only fifty,” Dennis corrected her.

“Huh-uh. They each have the energy of two normal humans. That makes a hundred.”

“I loved getting them started dribbling,” Tori said. “We had some who started off by saying they weren’t going to play basketball, but when they saw the cheerleaders dribbling, they changed their tune pretty quickly.”

“Yeah. Give those guys an opportunity and they’ll turn anything into a dance routine,” Dennis laughed.

“I noticed you were right in the middle of it,” Natalie said. “Our cheerleaders idolize you as much as the basketball team.”

“Oh, please. Don’t you know idolatry is a sin?” Dennis asked innocently.

“That’s only one of the things people think we’re sinning at,” Judith said. “And mostly they’re right.”

“Well, we’ll see how many of our little girls show up tomorrow,” Dennis said. “We might have a lot of them who think this is too much work.”

“I don’t think so. Talk about idolizing, you were so good with the sixth graders,” Natalie said. “They just want to do everything you can do.”

“As long as they don’t want to do everything you do,” Dennis said. “It’s too easy for the older girls to get the wrong idea.”

“I’m an older girl,” Brenda said. “And I think my idea is just right.” She pulled Dennis over on the couch and kissed him.

“Yeah. I could get into that idea,” he breathed at last.

“You better believe you could.”

“Dinner!” Gransy called. They all went in to serve themselves from the buffet Gransy had prepared. Even with only ten of them now, there were still too many to sit around the table on a normal night. They all still had pangs of missing Debbie, Daniella, and Roberta.

Dennis’s schedule didn’t ease up much when the work seemed to be finished at the Abernathys’. There had been a disappointing turnout for the open house on Sunday, with most of the people being locals who wanted to see the work the crew had done. But the winter wheat harvest was about ready to come in at the Browns’ place and Randy was giving him lessons on the combine. He expected Dennis to handle all the harvest and straw baling on the 500 acres he had tended the previous year. It was a big job, but six of his nine girlfriends would be helping.

The sports camp took four hours each afternoon from mid-July to mid-August. That cleverly got the coaches around the no-contact rules the first week of August. They weren’t contacting their teams. The teams were working in a sports camp with them to help younger girls.

Of course, after the camp, the coaches and teams scarcely had time to shower and eat before returning to the school for the evening workout. It was a major undertaking.

“Well,” Tom said the following Sunday afternoon, “you are certainly keeping everyone in town too tired to get into trouble. This might be the quietest summer Bartley has ever seen.”

“We do our best,” Dennis laughed. “I’m sure too tired to get into trouble.”

“Speaking of which, how are you getting any taping done for the website?” Dot asked.

“Olivia and Jayden are taping during our sessions with the kids during the day. They have to position themselves carefully so they aren’t showing any of the younger kids on camera, but the cheerleaders and I are in focus. It’s really fun because even if you can’t see them, there’s the energy in the room and you can hear them shout out answers to questions. Olivia figures that she’ll be able to cut together at least two good training tapes from every week of camp,” Dennis said.

“That girl’s a gem,” Brenda said. She’d joined the family for Sunday dinner. The other girls were planning to come over for popcorn and a movie later.

“Yeah. I’ve got to figure out some way to compensate her and Jayden. They really do a ton of work.”

“Den?”

“Hi, sweetie.” He put his arm around Lana and they walked to the car after the evening workout. “Can I take you home tonight?”

“I wish. Do you still love me?” Lana asked.

“I love you more every day.”

“I mean, we haven’t made love in a long time. Like more than a week. I wanted to make sure.”

“This crazy schedule is apparently designed to keep us all out of each other’s bed. Or, as Sheriff Tom says, out of trouble,” Dennis sighed. “Since we aren’t working at the Abernathys’ every day, our time to connect has been hacked.”

“I hate to make a date just to have sex, but could we?”

“Got a time in mind?”

“You’re working the wheat field tomorrow morning, right?”

“Yes.”

“Maybe you could start a little early and I could bring you something to eat about 11:30.”

“That would give us an hour and a half before we have to be at school for camp. I hate to rush it, but I’d love to have a tasty lunch with you.”

“I’ll bring some food, too.”

When Dennis shut down the combine at 11:30 the next day, the temperature was eighty and rising. The treat he found lying out on the blanket by the field raised his temperature even higher. He stopped to wash his hands at the basin Lana had prepared on the back of the four-wheeler and then dove into the snack she was providing.

Since they had become lovers, Lana had become bolder and bolder in her displays, both of affection and of her body. She lay back on the blanket, fully nude. A piece of wax paper lay across her pussy.

“Come and unwrap your sandwich, honey,” she purred.

Dennis paused long enough to give Lana a long and deep kiss, then slid down her body to remove the paper and replace it with his tongue. She was a little salty, but he loved licking between her labia and up to her clit as much as she loved him doing it. She began squirming almost at once.

“Please, Dennis. Please come and make love to me,” she begged. He took another swipe of her slit with his tongue and kissed his way up her body, pausing a little to suckle at her perfect breasts. By the time he reached her lips, the tip of his cock was at her pussy and she adjusted him a little so he could slide into her tight and welcoming body.

“Lana, I love you so much. I can’t believe it’s been so long since we last made love. I want to do this every day.”

“I’d welcome you into my body at any time,” she answered. “I didn’t know I’d like this so much. I knew Natalie and Amy and Brenda like it, but I didn’t realize what it would do to me. I wasn’t expecting to crave you like I do.”

“I didn’t expect to fall in love with you like I did,” Dennis said. “Not when I first stopped the cheerleaders. I just thought, ‘she needs help,’ and I jumped in. I’ve been getting deeper ever since.”

“I don’t think you can go much deeper. I love having you in me.”

Their flesh slipped together, lubricated by their sweat in the midday sun. His cock swelled and he could feel the come boiling in his balls.

“Baby, I’m about…”

“Yes. Come in me, lover. I want to feel you coming in me.”

The explosion from his cock was ample evidence of the reduced sex frequency he’d had this summer. The hot semen splashing in her vagina drove Lana over the edge into orgasm with her lover.

“I think, um… we need a shower before we show up for camp. We’ll have little girls sniffing at us,” Dennis said.

“Your house,” Lana said. “Get dressed and we’ll go pick up your car and leave. You can eat your real sandwich on the way.”

“I love you, Lana.”

“I love you, Dennis.”

“I’m so jealous!” Natalie hissed at Lana in the locker room.

“What?” Lana asked.

“It’s easy to see that you and Dennis got some quality time together today. I think my hymen is growing back together. And I didn’t have one to start with!”

“We really need to all get more time together,” Brenda agreed. “I haven’t even had time to fuck Amy, let alone Dennis.”

“By the time we get home at night, everyone is exhausted and bitchy,” Amy said. “I love you, Bae. I just haven’t been feeling up to anything. Especially with the heat wave we’ve been having.”

“At least your house is air conditioned. Dennis’s has all the windows open and fans blowing everywhere,” Nat said. “Even when I join him for dinner, it isn’t possible to fool around without Peg knowing.”

“I could ask Gransy if we can have a slumber party this weekend,” Amy suggested.

“Hey, Tori! How about a barn party this weekend?” Natalie asked.

“Sure. Think of Tori when you want to get your ticket punched. Good old Tori. We can have an orgy there. None of you ever say, ‘Hey, Tori. Want to have company tonight?’ Just if you all want to fuck everyone.”

“I didn’t know that was an option!” Brenda said. “I’d come out and spend the night with you any time!”

“You all get to hang out more than I do. I’ve only had sex like maybe three times all summer!” Tori complained.

“Don’t brag,” Judith said. “I’m supposed to have the most liberal parents of all of us and I get laid once in a month.”

“Hey, please,” Lana said. “We’re fighting among ourselves over who gets laid the most. I just want to be with all of you. And I know Dennis does, too. We just need to figure out how to make it work. No matter what you might think, I don’t go out to the field and have sex every day. We’re all getting less time together the more time we spend together. If that makes sense. My parents poopoo my complaints by saying, ‘You’re together eight hours a day. You leave at noon and don’t get back until nine.’ That might be true, but most of that time is spent with fifty to a hundred more people around us.”

“Of course, you’re right,” Tori said. “Let me clear an all-nighter at the barn for Saturday. I hope our guy is up to satisfying more than one girlfriend that night.”

The girls finished up and headed to the Armors’ for dinner that night. Then they headed back to school for the evening workout.

Chapter 2

THE ORGY SATURDAY night was a little low key—if you can call anything involving nine naked teen girls and a naked teen boy ‘low key.’ For once, the sleep-over did not include anyone playing basketball. They’d been in the gym and exercising with the rest of the teams and fifty middle school girls or on the field for evening workouts every day for nearly eight hours. There was a limit even to the inexhaustible.

In addition to that, Dennis spent all day Saturdays and Sundays working on his online courses—often with Brenda. He’d managed to get through the first summer term, but the second term was doubly difficult with the increased workload of the summer camp.

That wasn’t to say they were too tired for sex, but that it was quieter than usual. The lasting heat of the day in the barn made them all slick with sweat when the ten gathered in the stall on top of their sleeping bags. Recognizing how difficult it had been to get together with them, Dennis spent extra time with Tori and Judith, then cuddled with Diane and Leanne before moving on to the others. Brenda had often spent Saturday night with Dennis since she was there studying, and Lana demurred because she had recently enjoyed her boyfriend in the field, but Natalie and Amy both wanted special time with him. And that left Rosie. There was not as strong a lesbian vibe within the group with Daniella missing, but Brenda and Lana both spent time making sure their tall thin girlfriend’s needs had been taken care of.

“I can’t believe we don’t get more time together,” Dennis moaned as he slid into Natalie’s welcoming pussy. She sat back on his cock and pulled his hands to her breasts.

“Remember when I asked if we could do this all the time after we graduated?” she sighed. “I think we’ve gotten our answer. It’s a wonder any of our parents made love often enough to conceive us.”

“The problem is we’ve let everyone else set our priorities for us,” Amy said as she fingered Natalie’s clit. Her hand was wedged tightly between Dennis and Nat, but she managed to wiggle her finger enough to keep Natalie stimulated. “How can we just be teens when we have so much to do? And when we girls happen to have time off, Dennis is working in the fields.”

“We’ll all be in the fields next week,” he sighed. “I got the wheat in this week which means next week the straw needs to be baled. When we baled last year, we did it in smaller chunks. This year it’s all 500 acres. And then I’ll need to check the Abernathys’ place to see when I need to cut the next batch of hay.”

“I wonder what they’ll do with it,” Tori sighed as she cuddled up next to Natalie and Dennis. The two kept a slow pace of just sliding together as their girlfriends all seemed to focus on them.

“Good question. I guess Mr. Brown is managing it. Know anything, Lana?” Dennis asked.

“No. But how can you keep talking about things like that when you’ve got your cock in Natalie’s pussy? He’s in there, isn’t he, Natalie?”

“Oh, yeah. He’s in there. We found out it lasts longer if we don’t just focus on coming. I love just being connected,” Natalie said.

“I’m too much of a little piggy for that,” Tori said. “Once he makes contact with my pussy, I just want to go for the gold! Then I’m shot and can’t talk for an hour.”

“Obviously, it’s been more than an hour then,” Brenda laughed.

“Oh, God!” Natalie screamed as Judith’s tongue parted her butt cheeks. “No fair! You… You’re gonna… make me come!”

When Natalie started clenching on Dennis’s cock, he couldn’t hold back any longer and thrust up into her as he spewed his last load of the night. Natalie collapsed on his chest with Amy’s hand still trapped between them and Judith’s face still on her butt. They all shifted slowly and untangled.

“Let me just say that I love you all very much. I’m sorry I haven’t had more time, but it doesn’t mean I love you any less,” Dennis said.

“I love you all, too,” Diane said. “I guess it hasn’t been as hard on me as everybody else. I mean, I miss everybody, but I’m not being deprived since I’ve never started having sex yet. I don’t know right now if I ever will. It all just seems too difficult.”

“Baby, we’re here for you no matter what you decide about that,” Lana said. “A year ago, I thought that way, too. Everybody moves at their own pace toward their own goals.”

“Well, it’s a little more difficult for me,” Rosie said. “Without Daniella here, I don’t feel like I have a real connection. I know you try to take care of me, but it’s like an obligation or something.”

There were protestations and cuddles, but everyone felt the conversation was left a little up in the air.

The teens didn’t leave their stall Sunday morning except for the bathroom and shower. There wasn’t a lot of lovemaking but none of them wanted to be out of touching distance of their girlfriends and boyfriend.

Peg was singing in a church in County Seat that morning, so they didn’t feel obligated to go to Trinity to support her. She’d been in a different church nearly every Sunday this summer. Dot transported her and asked her every week if she still wanted to sing in different churches. Peg shrugged her shoulders as if it didn’t matter.

“I sing for Jesus,” she said matter-of-factly. However, she did not like to ride in the car for more than half an hour or forty-five minutes.

All the coaches met for lunch on Monday, including Dennis. He’d had to quit in the field a little early, not to make love to Lana, but to get home for a shower before the meeting. The superintendent of schools, Nathan Jones, met with them.

“I have two purposes in meeting with you today,” Jones said. “First, I want to announce the permanent appointment of Neil Griffith as our Athletic Director for Bartley Junior and Senior High School. Neil has an administrative background as assistant principal at Mid Valley High School where he was also assistant basketball coach before he moved to join us here. We’ve reviewed everyone’s credentials, believing we would have a smoother transition from Coach Byers if we promoted someone already on staff. You all bring impressive credentials to our school district and it was a very difficult choice. I hope you will all welcome Dr. Griffith as our Athletic Director, as you have done as our head basketball coach.”

“Doctor? Neil, I didn’t know you had a doctorate!” Pat said. “You kept that well-hidden.”

“I try not to make a big deal out that. Five bucks and a PhD in Math will get you a burger at the drive-in,” Neil said.

“Congratulations, Neil,” Grant said. “Frankly, I’m glad it’s you and not me!”

“Thanks. We’ve got a lot of pieces to pick up from last year. I think we’re headed for a good year this year,” Neil said.

“Now, to the second item of business,” Jones said. “I’d like to introduce you all formally to Coach Lyle Kelly who will join us this year as assistant football coach and wrestling coach. Lyle will also teach boys’ PE and may fill in for some others as needed. Welcome, Lyle.”

“Thank you, Dr. Jones. I’ve met some of you during the interview process, but I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you.” His voice was deceivingly soft for the mountain of a man that sat at the end of the table because that was the only space wide enough for him. Dennis had noticed when he came in that he was at least 6'6" and probably weighed 300 pounds. But to hear him speak, one would think he was a 5'5" accountant.

“Now, aside from covering the bill for lunch, my part of this meeting is over. I’d suggest you all introduce yourselves. I need to get back to the office and finalize plans for our new elementary teachers.” Jones left the table and the coaches introduced themselves, asking Lyle about his background.

“Well, I played right tackle at the University of Minnesota and then spent two years on the bench for the Vikings. I just wasn’t big enough to fill the slot in their line. I decided to remove myself and start using my degree as something besides a doorstop. I went back to U of M for my Master of Education degree in Sport and Exercise Science. I taught in Northern Minnesota for the past five years, but my family and I decided we wanted to move somewhere warmer.”

“And you chose Iowa instead of, like, Texas?” Ardith laughed.

“We wanted to stay in the US,” he answered. It was so soft and under spoken that for a moment, the coaches missed that he’d made a joke.

It finally got around to Dennis to introduce himself. All the other coaches had mentioned their degrees and years of experience and he felt a little inadequate.

“I’m Dennis. I’m a senior this year and have been granted the position of Student Assistant Coach for girls’ basketball and track. I manage the team managers for the department. I’m working on an AA at DMACC—sorry, that’s Des Moines Area Community College—in Exercise Science and Kinesiology. I hope to finish that next summer before I transfer someplace for a regular degree. Don’t know where yet.”

“Impressive,” Lyle said. “If I can help you in any way, let me know.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“Dennis is being a little reserved in his introduction,” Neil said. “You might as well know right off that this guy leads over a hundred people each day as our fitness and conditioning trainer. That includes all our sports teams, except possibly football—how about it, Grant? Going to challenge the cross country team again this year?—and also includes a huge drop-in program for any community resident. It’s an extremely successful program.”

“Maybe I can learn some things from you, Coach,” Lyle said, nodding to Dennis. Dennis blushed.

“Speaking of which, Dennis leads skills and conditioning for our summer Middle School sports camp, and we need to get over there,” Ardith said.

“I mean to tell you, the guy is an entire offensive line by himself!” Dennis said as he sat for dinner with his girlfriends. They were at the Armors’ tonight. The Armors, the Enders, the Vinings, the Browns, and the McDonalds rotated with Gransy in acting as hosts for the crew during the four weeks of sports camp and evening workouts. The Longs, Diane and Judith’s parents, had invited them out the next Friday, as well.

“You can’t be serious,” Natalie said. “No one’s that big.”

“He is,” Lily said. Natalie’s mother had prepared the feast they were enjoying. The Armors might have had the only dining room table that could extend far enough for all of them to sit around. “Not to make anyone feel inadequate, but after his interview with the school board, I looked his statistics up. He’s 6'7" tall and weighs 325 pounds. In addition to his football career, he was three-time NCAA weightlifting champion.”

“Um… Not that I’m influenced by physical prowess or anything, but could you maybe introduce me?” Tori giggled.

“Hmm. Fifteen inches shorter and a third his weight,” Dennis laughed. “Yeah, that could be a match.”

“Did you meet his wife?” Brenda asked.

“No. But how big a woman would you need to be to stand up to that big a guy?” Diane said. “I’m six inches taller than Tori and outweigh her by forty pounds. I wouldn’t consider it.”

The conversation moved on. They were all happy to hear that Coach Neil would be the new Athletic Director.

“What happened to Coach Byers?” Lana asked. “I hope he didn’t just get dumped. Nothing that happened was his fault.” In fact, when he’d become aware of the problems with Dennis and then with Lana, he’d acted immediately to remediate the situation. It couldn’t be considered his fault that a third scandal would rock the department.

“He was pretty shocked by the brawl last spring and the boys having deliberately placed last in every meet. Everyone agreed that it wasn’t his fault, but he felt the school system and the athletic program would recover more quickly if he wasn’t there to remind everyone. He positioned it as taking a needed sabbatical to travel and study before he returned to teaching. I think he’ll be fine,” Lily said

“We need to get things cleaned up and get back to the school for evening workout,” Natalie said. The crew jumped up from the table and engaged in a well-practiced clean-up routine that left the Armors’ kitchen and dining room spotless.

The workout was a good one. The temperature had finally cooled a few degrees and simply standing out there didn’t cause people to start sweating. By the time they were done with the hour-long workout, however, the sweat was running freely.

“Did you see?” Dennis whispered to his girlfriends as they gathered after the workout to head for the locker room. “He was here working out. You couldn’t have missed him.”

“You mean the mountain standing behind you?” Lana squeaked. Dennis spun around so fast he almost fell over. He looked up at Coach Lyle.

“That was a great workout, Coach,” Lyle said. “I broke an honest sweat. Brilliant use of the cheerleaders. They’re really great athletes!”

“Thanks, Coach Lyle. Um… These are my girlfriends. Natalie, Lana, Brenda, Amy, Judith, Tori, Leanne, Diane, and Rosie. I’d give you their numbers, but it might be confusing.”

“461-1121,” Tori shouted. They all laughed.

“Nice to meet you all. I understand that you’re the heart of the Angelines. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all. This is Josie and Lydia, and these are our daughters, Anna and Caitlyn,” Lyle said.

Dennis wasn’t sure which of the women he meant when he said ‘our daughters.’ The girls looked to be about twelve years old.

“Nice to meet you all. Say, are you two going to be in middle school next year? We have a sports camp running in the afternoons in the gym. You’d be welcome to join us,” Dennis said.

“Really? We weren’t here for the start. Would it be okay, Dad?” said Anna.

“I checked with Coach Ardith earlier and she said if you wanted to, you were welcome.”

“Cool!”

Dennis wasn’t sure Caitlyn looked as enthusiastic as her sister.

“Where are you living, Coach?” Natalie asked.

“Right at the moment, we’re in a motel over in County Seat. We hope to find a place to move to this week.”

“I can’t wait to move,” Josie said. “The temps at night in Thief River Falls are already dropping into the forties.”

“You’re kidding!”

“Well, to be fair, the lows have been in the fifties all summer,” Lydia laughed. “When we get moved, we’ll have to invite you all over for dinner and you can tell us all about life in small-town Iowa.”

“It would be a pleasure,” Brenda said.

The Kellys left and got in a large pickup truck that wouldn’t be at all out of place in Iowa. The girls hauled Dennis into the school and checked the locker room to be sure they were alone before they stripped each other and headed to the shower. If they could get away with showering in the locker room instead of at home or even at Tori’s, it was much more comfortable with six showerheads and plenty of room.

“I can’t believe the school board hired a guy with two wives!” Lana squealed.

“What? That’s not… They aren’t… Wow!” Dennis stammered.

“Oh, they can’t all be married, but one look at those girls and you could tell which woman was which girl’s mother,” Brenda agreed.

“Still, it’s so neat to have people like us as teachers!” Amy said. “And Tori could still have a chance on his team. Neither one of his wives were any bigger than her.”

“Yeah, but did you take a look at them? I don’t have anything to offer compared to those two,” Tori said. “I guess you’re still stuck with me.”

“I certainly wasn’t trying to get rid of you, doll,” Dennis said, pulling her to him under the spray. He kissed her emphatically as his cock rose to be trapped between her thighs.

“Could you, maybe, take me home tonight?” Tori whispered. Over her shoulder, Dennis could see the rest of his girlfriends nodding.

The next week was filled with backbreaking work for all of them. They were in the field before eight in the morning and were baling and stacking straw until noon. It was obvious that it would take the next week as well, at the rate the work was going. On the positive side, Randy brought the tractor, baler, and conveyer from Abernathys out to the field, so the crew didn’t have to lift every bale off the ground to the wagon. When a wagon was full, Lana pulled the second tractor up to it to take it to the loading site with five girls, while the other three connected the next wagon to the baler and stacked as Dennis ran the baler. Tori was experienced with the tractors, as well, so Dennis took his turns working the wagons and the stacking. Then they rushed to the school, showered and got ready for camp.

Anna and Caitlyn blended right in with the other seventh graders and soon had made friends. Lyle, Josie, and Lydia showed up with them every evening for the workouts. Both women were in excellent condition and Dennis figured they must be used to strenuous workouts on a regular basis.

“Girls, we’re headed back to Thief River Falls tomorrow to get packed and move down here,” Lyle said after camp on Friday. “We found a perfect place and I think you’ll love it.”

“Aw, do we have to go back, Dad?” Anna whined. “It’s not like we’ve got that much to pack.”

“And what would you do here?” Josie asked. “Where would you stay?”

“Oh, tell me to butt out if you want, but I wouldn’t mind having a couple of little sisters for a week or so,” Natalie said. “My two older sisters moved out to go to State this spring. I’ve been kind of lonely.”

“Really? Could we do that, Mom?” Caitlyn asked.

“We’d need to talk to Mrs. Armor,” Lydia said. “I don’t like to just dump you on someone.”

“Come on over now,” Natalie said. “Mom volunteered for two nights this week. She’ll never even notice five extra mouths.”

“Really? Maybe I should call her,” Lyle said.

“Mom? Can we bring the Kellys with us to dinner tonight?” Natalie said into her phone, already ahead of the conversation. “Sure. Here, Coach. Mom wants to issue a personal invitation.” Natalie handed her phone to Coach Lyle and shortly, he had agreed to come over.

“We need to run back to County Seat so you can shower.”

“They can join us in the locker room tonight,” Diane said. “We all shower here instead of splitting up and then getting back together. Everyone else is probably gone by now.” They took off to the locker room and the girl’s moms went with them. Dennis turned to Lyle.

“Have you seen the Coaches’ locker room yet?” he asked. “I shower there. I’ll show you where.” The two went down to the lockers and Coach Lyle sat on a bench while Dennis ducked in for his shower. In five minutes, they were all out and walking together to the Armors’ house.

“Josie, Lydia, and Lyle, we would love to have Anna and Caitlyn stay with us for a week or so until you get moved down here. I’m so glad you’ve found a place so quickly. I’ve missed having three teenage daughters in the house since Daniella and Roberta moved out this spring,” Lily said.

“Natalie doesn’t bring this crew around anywhere near enough to fill the void,” John agreed. The girls all responded with a sympathizing ‘Aww.’

They efficiently cleared the dishes and got the kitchen cleaned up. Dennis stole a kiss from Lana as they dried the silverware and got a tap on the shoulder from Lily.

“You still have to remember rule number three,” Lily said severely. The two quickly looked around and saw Anna and Caitlyn helping wipe the dining table down.

“Not in front of the children,” the two whispered.

On the way back to school for evening workout, Leanne jumped up beside Lydia.

“Where did you find to live?” she asked. “In town here?”

“Almost,” Lydia laughed. “See that white farmhouse and beautiful red barns over there? It is so cute. When we get moved in, we’ll invite you all over.” She suddenly became aware that the whole group had stopped and looked at them.

“Is there something wrong?” Lyle asked.

“We… didn’t know it had been sold yet,” Dennis said. “It’s kind of special to us. I’m glad you were able to buy it.”

“We didn’t. The agent was closing a deal on the property, but the new owners were looking for someone to rent the farmhouse. We signed a lease,” Lyle said.

“What is it, Dennis?” Josie asked. “How is it special to you?”

“Um… We all were very close to the Abernathys. Abe passed away just after I got the first cutting of hay brought in. We did all the painting and landscaping over there. It’s just hard to think of them as gone,” Dennis said.

“I had no idea!” Lydia said. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay,” Leanne said. “I hope you do have us over after you get settled. We’d love to see it inhabited by nice people.”

“Are you going to continue to take care of the fields?” Lyle asked.

“I don’t know. I guess the agent will call me or the new owner and tell me if he wants me to keep the fields up. That next cutting of hay needs to come in by Labor Day so I can get the field ready for winter,” Dennis said.

“Maybe I can lend my back when it comes time to stack bales,” Lyle said.

Chapter 3

THE CREW FOUND OUT how having two little sisters put a crimp in their activities. They’d invited the girls to stay and they came out to the field with them in the morning to help with baling and stacking the straw. They weren’t sure they liked having to work so much, even though they were given simple jobs. They liked being with the older kids though, and soon managed to make friends with Tori and Lana’s siblings, Leanne’s siblings, and Rosie’s brother. By the time the evening workout was done on Monday, they had playdates arranged with other girls who would be in their class.

But they were with the crew for evening meals, workouts, and even showers. Playtime for the crew was definitely limited. The last of the straw was baled and stacked Friday morning and they were all ready for a break. Unfortunately, Dennis had fallen behind in his class and the term ended the previous week. He had just this weekend to finish his incompletes and that tied him down all day Saturday and Sunday. He couldn’t join his girlfriends Saturday in moving the Kellys into their new home.

And then practice started.

The football schedule was enough different from the cross country and volleyball schedule that they did not participate in the daily conditioning session. Dennis had a feeling, though, that coaches Grant and Lyle were working the team just as hard. They were rebuilding from scratch, though. Last year’s team had been predominantly seniors. This year, there were a lot of freshmen. The team was both smaller and weaker than the previous year.

Dennis expected to see Donnie and Dave back on the cross country team. Donnie had made a full recovery over the summer and might not be as strong as he’d been a year ago, but was working out every day. What he didn’t expect to see was the contingent of guys from the track team who had been involved in the fracas. Jim, Drew, Si, and Greg. Three of those four had all played football the previous year.

“I didn’t expect you guys to be running cross country this year,” Dennis said after practice.

Si stepped up to face Dennis. He was the biggest of the guys and they still didn’t like each other. But it seemed he was the spokesperson for the guys who had participated in the battle against the Bulldogs.

“We owe Coach Andy,” he said. “We screwed up the track season last spring and it shows poorly on him. We might not be able to beat you in a footrace, but we’ll beat some runners. I’m suspended from competition. The other guys, though… They’ll be right behind you.”

“Great. I’ll be trying not to let them catch me,” Dennis laughed.

There wasn’t much time to get ready for the first event, and Dennis was happy to have been working out so hard all summer. The second Bartley 5k Open was Saturday morning. His cross country team lined up with boys beside the girls. In the ‘traditional’ challenge, the football team lined up next to them. Then came other students and finally community runners. It looked like a much bigger event than the previous year.

Dennis crossed the finish line in 17:50 for a solid first place, but there was an older runner from County Seat who was only ten seconds behind him. Donnie, Dave, and Drew all broke twenty minutes, and surprisingly, asthmatic Darrel was just over twenty minutes. He’d received some new treatments for his asthma over the summer and was breathing much more clearly.

Janice was thick with the guys as she, too, broke twenty minutes with her first place women’s finish. Five other Bartley women were in the top twenty-five places and under twenty-five minutes. It was looking like a good season coming up.

“Does it seem to you like time is compressing into nothing?” Dennis sighed. “Or am I already suffering from acute senioritis?”

“Or did Lana bring brownies that have happy stuff in them?” Tori asked as she leaned back against Dennis’s leg and stared up into the night sky. It was such a beautiful night that the teens had not gone into the barn, but simply lay out on the grass near the campfire.

“Not my fault,” Lana said, turning her head from the other side of Dennis to kiss her girlfriend on the forehead.

“I feel it, too,” Judith said. She was propped against a log seat and Dennis lay back between her legs, his head resting on her bosom. “It’s like summer is gone already and we didn’t do anything. And next comes graduation and Dennis and Natalie and Diane and Leanne and Tori will all disappear on us the way Roberta and Daniella did. And next summer will just be… empty.”

“Don’t be so pessimistic,” Natalie said. “Whatever we do, we know we aren’t going far away. Dennis wants to stay near enough to Peg so she doesn’t have too much adjustment to make. I don’t know about anyone else, but that means at least Brenda and I will still be near, too.”

The longest-term girlfriends were on the other side of the fire, generally leaning against each other and giving the newest girlfriends time to spend with their boyfriend. Brenda, Amy, and Natalie still had the easiest access to Dennis because they could walk over and stay the night just about any time. Usually they just slept, but there was a little lovemaking involved. Besides, they felt Rosie, Diane, and Leanne needed more contact with them. The difference between the girlfriends who were lovers and the girlfriends who weren’t was becoming more pronounced and they could feel the three pulling away.

“I’m going away,” Leanne said. “Don’t cut me off, please. I don’t want to break up. Yet. I got my early acceptance letter from Northwestern University this week. I’m going into their Legal Studies program.”

“Leanne!” Rosie said, wrapping her arms around her long-time neighbor and friend.

“Congratulations,” Dennis said. “That’s really exciting news.”

“I figured my boyfriend and girlfriends should be the first to know. I haven’t even told my parents yet,” Leanne said.

“Like father, like daughter?” Natalie said. “I know Zoe and Eva are planning to go to law school next year. Dad’s very proud of them.”

“How’d we get so many lawyers in our little town?” Diane asked. “Your father, Leanne’s father, my father. My older brothers have already declared themselves for different fields, so he’s looking to me next.”

“Thank goodness, Dad knows I have no higher ambition than playing basketball in college and coaching afterward,” Natalie said.

“Summer camp didn’t dull your ambitions?” Lana asked. “I’m certainly thinking twice about having anything to do with kids in the future. Even my brother and sister!”

“I think they’re adorable!” Natalie said. “It was so much fun having Anna and Caitlyn living with me the last week of camp. Even if it put a bit of a damper on some of our activities.”

“So, Leanne, how do you want to define your identity with the crew this year? You kind of just told us you were breaking up with us… at least in the spring,” Amy said.

“Yeah, I guess I did, didn’t I?” she said. “The thing is, I don’t want to not belong with us. Does that make sense? I don’t want to not be included in things just because I’m temporary. I don’t want any other girlfriend or boyfriend. I guess I don’t really want to fuck, either, since it would just be for entertainment and not for commitment. But I’m still happy to get naked and play little games and be together with you all. That includes you, Dennis.”

There was no response. Judith leaned forward and saw his closed eyes.

“He’s out cold,” she said. “So much for marathon sex tonight.”

Of course, they didn’t do without sex. And Dennis woke up enough to participate.

It felt like an extension of his dreams. Tori rolled her head on his thigh and began nibbling at his cock. Lana pushed her way up to kiss Judith and that left her nipple just at Dennis’s lips where he responded by sucking and licking it. When Dennis was hard, Tori rolled a condom on his cock and mounted him. Dennis was in a world of tits and pussies. He didn’t come right away and when Tori finished her ride for pleasure, Judith moved around to take her place, leaving Lana to kiss and be fondled by her boyfriend. Dennis wanted the dream to continue for as long as possible. He stayed hard without coming. But when Judith finished and rolled off him, the condom was stripped off and Lana planted herself on his cock.

Dennis’s eyes snapped open to look into the intense blue eyes of his blonde lover and pull her to him. He was oblivious to the whispers and continued play around him. Lana’s face, her lips, her pussy clasped around his cock consumed him. They rocked together and slid their bodies against each other. Each time she moved forward and back and he sank into her again, electric charges ran up and down his spine. As she mounted toward a climax, just as Tori and Judith had done, he hugged her to him and thrust as far into her as he could to unleash the torrent of semen built up inside him. He flooded her pussy and she came, adding more of her own juices to the mix that flowed out between them.

When they collapsed next to each other, Natalie pillowed them against her breasts while Amy softly licked the juices off Dennis’s cock and Brenda cleaned the mess from between Lana’s legs. And in that position, sleep claimed them.

The school lawns and sports fields looked like a well-manicured golf course when the students arrived on Monday morning. The new groundskeeper had been out all Saturday afternoon making sure everything was in perfect condition for the first day of school. Somehow, arriving at a building that sparkled as much as this one did served to enthuse the students about returning to the classroom, even though it still looked like summer outside.

Dennis would not be in any classes until his 1:45 statistics class with Coach Neil, but on days when Bartley was in session and DMACC was not, he had to check in at the same time as other students in the morning. He and the girlfriends all arrived at the same time and they found their way to first period classes. Dennis went straight to the coaches’ office where Ardith checked him in. He spent the day organizing the equipment cage and checking all the team manager first aid kits.

The new athletic pavilion was not completed yet, but they were scheduled to move into it on November 1, just in time to start basketball practice. It would be a chaotic time. As long as the weather held, he would continue to lead combined workouts on the softball field starting at 3:30, fifteen minutes after school let out.

Then there was cross country practice. He was pleased to see the course had been as well cared-for by the new groundskeeper as the rest of the school grounds.

“Welcome to the new routine,” Coach Andy said. “We have to work earlier now that school is back in session and we have the first games this week. So, Coach Dennis will be starting conditioning exercises at 3:30 each afternoon. The first volleyball game of the season is tomorrow night at the Roadrunners. Coach Pat and I have agreed to split out volleyball for separate warmups on game days. I want you all to look around you at some of the younger faces in our group this afternoon. We have enough of you now that we can cover the junior high meets as well as the varsity meets. And at many of our regular season cross country meets, there will be races for a junior varsity or there will be a freshman-sophomore race. Believe me that if you are showing varsity running, neither Coach Ardith nor I is going to force you to run JV instead of varsity—even if you are a freshman or sophomore.”

“You’re going to see a lot of that this year,” Ardith said. “Our teams have had a lot of hard times, but they are behind us now. We have more athletes trying out for sports than ever before. So, we’ll be fielding JV teams in volleyball, cross country, and basketball. And we’ll have Junior High cross country and basketball. We want to give as many of you as possible an opportunity to play. So, as of right now, look at your teammates and choose someone to help along. Janice, lead out on an easy five. Everyone stick with her. Dennis, run drag and keep people together. Ready, go!” she shouted. There were a few seconds of confusion as everyone sorted themselves out on the track and then Janice was off in the lead and everyone was following. It would be an interesting year.

Dennis checked in with everyone else Tuesday morning, but this morning there was a separate DMACC high school orientation at 11:30. In addition to expanding the sports program, Bartley had expanded its participation in the Career Advantage Program (CAP) at DMACC with more classes being offered at Bartley that would give dual credit in both high school and college. Dennis probably could have taken most of his DMACC classes at the high school, but no one objected to him traveling to Boone for class.

He expected to see Leanne in the orientation, but was surprised to see some of his other girlfriends in the room as well. Lana, Amy, Natalie, and Debbie were all taking dual credit classes.

There were some other unexpected faces in the room, but Coach Neil, who presented the program, said that several tech school courses were also being offered, including both automotive classes and computer classes. Olivia was taking technical courses in computer programming.

“This is a great opportunity that you are taking advantage of,” Ms. Duval, the guidance counselor, said. “I want you to know that my door is always open. If you have any issues, please don’t let them fester or get out of control. Come to me and we’ll work to get things resolved.” The guidance counselor had been very helpful in getting Dennis’s classes set up.

“I didn’t know you guys were taking advantage of the CAP program,” Dennis said after school as they headed to the locker rooms.

“It would be silly not to get college credit the high school has to pay for,” Diane said. “When Leanne told me what she was doing last year with Calculus, I jumped on it this year.”

“It just makes me more marketable when it comes to getting recruited,” Natalie said.

“We need to get ready to leave for the Roadrunners,” Lana said, cutting things off. Dennis kissed Natalie, Lana, Judith, Rosie, and Amy for luck and they took off as the others joined him for the workout.

“That was close,” Amy whispered to Lana as they boarded the bus.

“I hope this works,” Lana replied. “But if it doesn’t, I don’t want anybody disappointed in us.”

“It will work. We’ve got the brains to do it.”

“I’m sure glad we’re in it together. Thank you for talking me into it.”

“I don’t think I’d survive without it. It’s hard enough with Bren at DMACC, and she lives with me.”

The rest of the trip to the Roadrunners was spent studying.

The first class Dennis had at 8:00 Wednesday morning was weight-lifting. He was met by a trainer who took assessments and nodded in approval of Dennis’s condition. Then they talked for half an hour regarding Dennis’s goals and athletic interests.

“Okay. What I’m going to do is design a program for you to enhance what you’re already doing and get you set up on the weights. Let’s meet Wednesday morning and go over what I want you to do. Then, you’ll have your worksheet to fill out after each weight session here.”

“Do I need to do all the lifting here?” Dennis asked. “We have a pretty good weight room in Bartley.”

“That’s great. Our sessions together are by arrangement and will include both a mid-term and final assessment. The rest is all on you. If you lift a couple or three times a week and keep track of your record, that will be all I need. The assessments will tell me if you’re keeping honest records. But any time, you can call for an appointment if you discover you need help or are having difficulty with a particular lift.”

That would be a relief. Dennis would have something to do on the three days a week that he was at Bartley in the morning. All his DMACC classes were on Monday and Wednesday.

Of course, not all his time at Bartley would be spent in the gym. His next classes at DMACC were Sociology and Philosophy. They promised to be interesting classes, but each had an online component that supplemented the two hours a week in class. And both had a lot of reading to be done. Nonetheless, Dennis enjoyed the intro classes, even though they promised to be time-consuming.

His last DMACC class only met for an hour on Mondays. It was the mandatory “College Experience” class and focused on where things were, how to use various resources, and generally, how to take advantage of being a college student.

He had one more hybrid class, supervised by Coach Dearborn. As part of his AA degree requirements, Dennis had to take Fitness and Conditioning. Like the Weight Training class, this was typically left to arrangement of student and trainer. Coach Dearborn felt that the daily conditioning classes he led at Bartley would fulfill the requirement.

Dennis was finished in Boone by 12:10, which left him plenty of time to get to his 1:45 Statistics class back at Bartley. It would be a difficult schedule, but he was pleased with how doable it would be. And this term would give him eighteen hours of college credit toward his AA in Exercise Science and Kinesiology.

The girls won their first volleyball match at the Roadrunners in three games straight. Thursday night at home, they were not so lucky and dropped three straight to the Cardinals. They did well and played hard, though. No one was disappointed. The junior varsity had matched their play both nights.

Friday night, everyone got together to go to the football game and the school’s beginning of the year dance. The cheerleaders had been expanded some and there were now three teams, including one devoted to JV games. That team included two eighth graders who had been in the summer camp. The Team A cheerleaders, assigned to the football games included Sara, Fred, Claudia, and Rae. Team B, assigned to the volleyball games, included Doc, Donna, Sharon, and Rebecca. The JV Squad had three freshmen and the two eighth graders.

The teams had been to a cheerleading clinic the previous weekend and were excited to perform now that the seasons had begun.

The football game proved exciting. It was obvious that the Bartley team was inexperienced. There were fewer than thirty on the team this year and they scrapped hard for every yard, surprising everyone with a 26-21 victory. The Wolverines’ kicking game was even weaker than it had been the year before. They scored four touchdowns and one two-point conversion after. The Tigerhawks scored three times with good kicks afterward, so the Wolverines needed that last touchdown to win the game.

It put everyone in a good mood as they went into the school multipurpose room for the dance. It was nothing elaborate, with a student DJ who tapped in requests on his playlist and played them through the school speakers. Various clubs were using the dance as an opportunity to recruit new members and the wall was lined with tables of club activity exhibits. Future Farmers, Future Teachers, the Automotive Club, Speech and Debate Club, Student Government, Photography, Yearbook, Student newspaper, and a helping hands service club, inspired by what the Angelines had done for the Abernathys and others.

Dennis was occupied with dancing as he was surrounded by his girlfriends.

“Hey, Natalie, switch partners?” Chris Davis asked when she and Donnie Oswald danced near to her and Dennis.

“Sure! How are you doing, Donnie?” Natalie asked as she moved over, giving Chris room to get closer to Dennis.

“Hey, Chris. I hear you’re playing volleyball this season,” Dennis said. Of course, he’d seen her in his workouts all summer, working close to her boyfriend.

“Well, with Donnie running, I needed something to do, too. It’s fun, even though I’m the only senior on the JV squad.”

“I think it’s great. It gives the underclassmen a good example to look up to.”

“Thanks. You always have something nice to say. So… um… I want to say thank you.”

“For what, Chris? I mean, you’re welcome and all, but did I do something?” Dennis asked.

“All summer. Last spring, Donnie was ready to just quit on everything. It was really hard to recover from the beating he took. But you made an effort to invite him to the workouts and told him you’d give him exercises to help his recovery. And all summer long he’s been there and you’ve encouraged him. Now he’s running again like he loved to do. I just want to say thank you. Because, you know, I really love him and I was so afraid I’d lost him.” There was a tear sparkling in Chris’s eye, but it didn’t escape as she blinked it away.

“I’m just glad I could be there for him when he needed someone,” Dennis said. “Really, I’m happy he’s recovered.”

“We were really all nasty to you in school. I’m sorry.”

“No, don’t beat yourself up about that. I just did my best to disappear until sophomore year. Coach Ardith really helped me open up to helping others and not being focused on my own problems all the time,” Dennis said.

“Still, I want to graduate this spring knowing I have Dennis Enders as a friend,” Chris said. “We might even invite you to the wedding,” she whispered.

“Really? Congratulations!”

“We aren’t saying anything yet. But we’re talking about it a lot. Mostly in bed.” She blushed and Dennis laughed.

“That’s where some of the best conversations happen,” he said.

Chapter 4

DENNIS WAS ON the tractor at the Abernathy place early Saturday morning. He’d talked to Randy while they were baling straw and Randy said to proceed as planned with the hay harvest and prepping the field. He’d still be paid by the men’s group on behalf of the new owner. There was no information regarding who owned the place now, only that Lyle and his family had leased it from the agent.

He didn’t expect any problems with mowing and raking. They’d used some of Abe’s equipment on Randy’s straw field and Randy agreed to loan his tractor for the baling and hauling to help speed that process up. The weather had cooled slightly overnight and he kept his shirt and overalls on as he worked through the morning.

When he saw two girls jumping up and down near the barn waving at him, he assumed it was time for lunch, though it didn’t seem he’d been out that long. He shut down the tractor and mower and walked across the field to the barn, thinking about a little roll on a blanket with his girlfriends.

Only it wasn’t his girlfriends who met him. Anna and Caitlyn, Coach Lyle’s daughters, were waiting for him.

“Hi, Coach Dennis,” Caitlyn greeted him. “Mom said you were probably working up a thirst out there and we should bring you some water.”

“Thank you, Caitlyn. That was very thoughtful of you.”

“We baked cookies this morning and Mom said you’d probably like some to keep your energy up,” Anna said, holding out a plate.

“Oh, yum. Chocolate chip,” Dennis said, accepting a cookie.

“It’s from one of those refrigerator doughs you can buy at the grocery store,” Caitlyn said disparagingly. “It’s not like she really made them herself.”

“I cooked them!” Anna complained. “Your water just came out of a faucet.”

“Did not. It’s bottled water.”

“Right.”

“Hey, you don’t need to fight about this. I really appreciate you bringing me a morning snack and drink. It was very thoughtful of both of you.”

The girls were suddenly very bashful and just stammered, “You’re welcome.” Two almost thirteen-year-old seventh graders. Dennis groaned inside while trying to keep a mask of congeniality in place. They weren’t the first girls from summer camp who’d greeted him or hung around. It seemed half the girls from sixth through eighth grades had been in the bleachers next to the crew at the football game the previous night. Well, he was going to spread the joy around a bit.

“You know, I heard Natalie talking to Brenda the other day about how she missed having her little sisters in the house. I bet if you talked to her, she’d love to teach you to make cookies from scratch. She’s done it with my sister, Peg. In fact, all the Angelines love to bake and cook.”

“Really?”

“Why don’t I give her a buzz right now and see what she’s up to?” Of course, Dennis didn’t call. He texted Natalie and asked if she’d be up to teaching Anna and Caitlyn to bake cookies. The response was instant and Dennis answered his phone.

“Hey, love. Anna and Caitlyn brought me a snack out to the field for morning break. They’d both love to learn how to bake those snickerdoodles you make. Want to show them?”

“Now?”

“Sure. If it’s okay with their moms.”

“I’ll call Josie and make the invitation. Tell the girls I’ll be over to pick them up in twenty minutes.” She disconnected.

“Well, Nat’s calling your moms right now to see if she can pick you up for a baking lesson. I hope you’re up for it,” Dennis said.

“Yes!” the girls said, jumping up and down. They jumped to give him a quick peck on the cheek and took off running toward the house. Dennis gave a sigh of relief and headed back to his tractor.

A couple of hours later, Dennis saw a woman near the barn waving for him to come in to lunch. When he approached, he once again found it was not a girlfriend, but Lyle’s wife, Josie.

“Hi, Josie! I wasn’t expecting you to bring me lunch after the girls brought me cookies and water this morning,” Dennis said, trying not to sound disappointed.

“Oh, I didn’t make this up. When Natalie came to get the girls this morning, she asked me to bring you the lunch she had prepared. Of course, I agreed. How often do we three all get a Saturday morning alone in the house without the girls? Sorry I can’t stay to eat with you, but Lydia is kind of keeping my place warm for me while I ran out with this. Enjoy!” With that, Josie turned and sprinted for the house.

Dennis shook his head and snorted. Well, he set that up!

When Dennis got home, he found all his girlfriends at the house, as well as Peg, Dot, Anna, and Caitlyn. The kitchen counter was piled with cookies!

“We all made our favorites!” Natalie exclaimed, hugging her boyfriend. “You started something.”

“The cookies all look great, but what are we doing for dinner?” Dennis asked.

“Josie and Lydia invited us all over to their house for dinner tonight. Just go get your shower and change. We’ll get to go inside the house.”

“Oh. Okay, I guess,” Dennis said.

“Don’t worry, honey. We’re all going to the barn tonight after dinner,” Tori whispered. “I mean all the girlfriends and you. Not the children.”

He could tell Tori was a little frustrated by the chaperones as well. He slipped off to the bathroom and got showered before he rejoined the family for the trip back out to the farm.

“Hey, can I help on the grill?” Dennis asked. He was relieved to see the pile of hamburgers headed for the grill rather than finding Lydia and Josie had spent all day cooking. Lyle had a huge gas grill.

“That would be great! I’m trying to practice for next weekend. I figure there will be all this crew and at least another couple of families,” Lyle said.

“You mean, you’re going to try to feed the haying crew? That’s not fair. Let us contribute, too,” Dennis said.

“Oh, the guys who are coming out to help bale told me they’d bring all the meat and their wives would be out with everything else we need. All I’ll have to do is cook it. Grab those tongs and turn the sausages, would you?”

“Sure. I guess we’ll start baling on Friday since there’s no school, but we won’t have a full crew. This field takes about two days just to drop the bales. It’s stacking that takes the time and effort,” Dennis said. “I guess we’ll put up more haystacks next to the one beside the barn. I haven’t heard what we’re doing with this cutting.”

“I’m not in charge of that. When it comes to work in the field, I’m just a strong back. I do what I’m told.”

“Randy’s made sure I learn every step of the process,” Dennis laughed. “And I still don’t know what comes next most of the time.”

“Hey, you guys. I was instructed to take the men some pop,” a voice said from behind them. Dennis turned to see his coach approaching.

“Coach Ardith! I didn’t know you were out here this evening,” Dennis said.

“I got an invitation from Lyle.” She handed them both Dr Peppers. “And that’s something we talked about. When we’re socializing like this and there aren’t any people around to impress, I’ve told the girls to just call me Ardith. That goes for you, too. We don’t need to be ‘Coach’ anything unless that’s what we’re doing.”

“That goes for me, too. Just call me Lyle when you’re out here in my home.”

“Yes, sir. Um… Lyle. Uh… Ardith. I guess you should just call me Dennis,” he laughed. Ardith could see the blush on his cheeks, though. She put an arm around his waist.

“Really. We can just be friends when we’re away from school,” she said. Dennis turned toward her and nodded.

“Okay. We’re ready to start shoveling meat on the platters,” Lyle said. “Dennis, that platter’s for the sausages. I’ll heap this one with burgers.”
