About the Author
Hello everyone, my name is CMed. I will make it brief and quick about me. I was a college student who got a Major in History before going into the realm of the military. I am a Navy Veteran that has served for six years and wanted to become an author and book writer near the end of my military contract.
Serving aboard ship was a long and challenging life. It is not for the faint-hearted, but after being taken off of it, I now had more time than ever. I used my time wisely to begin writing books. Writing had and continues to serve as therapy for me. It helped me through my times, even way before diseases or social unrest ever became the main headlines of modern media.
Writing is something that does not come overnight. Most writers require at least two years of writing before they are even going to be marketing. Needless to say, make sure that you set the time to do so if you wish to be a part of that hobby. If you know somebody that wishes to become an author, make sure to give them that support. Writing is an extension of us and our imagination. Without imagination, our civilizations would never exist. Without imagination, we would have no empathy towards the next person. We all come from different walks of life. Each one of us can tell a story, and it all comes down to our will to survive through the best of times to the worst of times.
I have designed Tales of Heroes and Gabatrix to be a system that expands itself. If people like my stories, then they can help out that cause. With the help of you, the audience, the system will get bigger and bigger. If you like my stories, then come and support me on my Patreon. Thank you, and enjoy my stories. :)

Prologue
“Even with space folding technology, I believe that we’re still in a perpetual race against time. It is in a race against whatever is out there. It is a race against fate, and it is a race against ourselves. It’s up to all of us to pass that finish line together.” Gabatrix’s comments at the Martian Astrological Research Center, 2320 AD.
……. Humanity and an alien race stand against one another or possibly together. The Itrean clans have set their attention into UWA space…..
…….It is an unknown time period of viable hostility, the possible end of humanity, or a manageable time when there is nothing to fear at all….
…….In orbit of the colony world of Oshun, a UHN serviceman is only a witness to the catastrophic Battle of Oshun. The lingering ailments of war remain within him as he moves forward into the career of racing and the desire to have a family…..
Chapter 1: November 4th, 2349 AD (Prelude)
Space…..the empty blackness devoid of life. In all concepts, that very aspect of it is something that has baffled many lifeforms that are conscious enough to perceive it. It is everything, and it is everywhere.
We stand in the darkness of the great void of nothingness near a far distant yellow dwarf star. We are in the far reaches of the Sol system just past the location of the so-called “Oort Cloud,” an area of billions but far-spaced pieces of rocks. The floating debris is often considered to be the entrance and exit barrier to this singular star system. It is vastly enormous, serving as a spherical marker for early human astronomers. Stars twinkle and blink above, below, and in every direction from where we float. The cosmic engine of the galaxy instead keeps us in the perpetual slow orbit as you can see the various colors of the entire light spectrum. It is both beautiful and lonesome to some. Of course, we never had to worry about this as we know where we reside. Space can’t hurt us, and instead, we are simply observing the cosmic history of the indigenous life in the universe.
With so much space out there, it can be a massive burden for any developing life that is conscious enough to reach the desire to spread itself. For life such as humans, it had been an evolutionary state of importance. Perhaps it was the same for us as well. Humanity would learn that something was significant in its survival. Speed and intelligence were the keys to its existence. Not only was it smart to develop the tools to hunt and farm, but it was essential to be quick. Being fast was the difference between evading a hunting predator that wanted to eat you and being able to live long enough to reproduce. In our observations of life-like humanity, a similar trend could be observed from time to time.
As humanity continued to evolve, so did the desire to get faster. Earth was a prominent enough place as it was for developing civilizations. The need to get from point A to point B was crucial for governments, societies, economics, and everything to work. Speed is in their heart, even if they agree to it or not.
Such things would often lead us back to here. When humanity reached the stars and began to look to new places beyond Earth, they were suddenly hit with a critical dilemma. Outside of their habitable environment was an utterly enormous barrier that they couldn’t exist at all. We can see it for ourselves in the darkness. There is nothing here for them to live in, and even their nearest planets would take months to years to ever get to them. Much of the human race’s desire to reach new worlds, they were dashed the moment that they came to this realization.
However, it was not the end to space exploration. Humanity knew that they had a potential enemy that was looming over them. Their planet was becoming more and more hostile towards their existence. A lingering fact had remained that even Earth wouldn’t exist forever. Eventually, one way or another, their home would be out of their reach, whether it would take thousands of years or billions of years to achieve it.
It simply came down to one existential factor. Speed was the key to survival. The faster that a spaceship could go, the faster it could reach its destination. We watch as one of the first successful probes of humanity begins to get closer to us. We choose this time and location for a specific reason. We get to marvel at the engineering that this race had created. It is an object that measures about 47 centimeters in height. It isn’t that big, having a mass of about 722 kilograms. At the time, it was a marvel of construction when it was launched in their year of 1977. The Voyager probe consists of a container with a dish and radio antenna. On the container are various gadgets, including instruments to measure electromagnetic radiation, solar winds, cameras, and more. It had performed its job admirably, having gathered data on the planets in the outer solar Sol system. As of the time it was launched, the Voyager probes were some of the fastest human-made objects ever made. Traveling at speeds of over 17 kilometers per second, it is never-ending on its journey.
Of course, it still is quite far away from us. The Voyager 1 probe had long completed its mission. Its batteries had been long depleted. It carries one final gift, however. In it is the recordings and data tapes of the human race. It is a time capsule of information and serves as a relic of their existence if something were ever to extinguish them. Even at its incredible speeds, space is so enormous that it took the probe over three hundred years before it reached the Oort Cloud. As it endures its trip, the probe will continue to travel through this region of space for over thirty thousand years. Its destination will take it to what they call the “Ophiuchus Constellation,” located almost six light-years away. We watch as the probe zips past us. It is hard to see it completely, but we can note its outlines as it slips further and further away from Earth and beyond.
Humanity had to find something faster than this. The Direct Fusion drive would serve as a method to shave a trip to Mars to a mere few months. Eventually, the vastly improved Super Direct Fusion Drive would reduce the time even further by weeks. Suddenly, distant objects seemed closer, and the human race finally had a method to reach nearby planets. Even if speeds of over 300 kilometers per second seemed quick, it was still too slow. Their nearest star, Proxima Centauri, was over four light-years away. Spaceships would take thousands of years to make that trip, and the humans could only live for so long before their prodigy would have to continue. Like so many space-faring individuals, the humans were trapped until they would fall extinct, discover something else, or invent a new method of propulsion.
We say goodbye to the Sol System. We begin to move away from this area. We go faster and faster until we start to see Sol shrink down to a mere speck amongst the stars. Humanity has grown hungry. Their desire to find something faster than their Super Direct Fusion Drives would propel them to seek any form of faster than light travel ideas and concepts that might provide the answer. Even as we reach lightspeed, you can feel the cosmic phenomenon of the time sheer. What we have been long protected from is a new issue for humankind. As objects reach the speed of light, it is time that begins to operate differently. If we were humans traveling in a spaceship reaching these phenomenal speeds, we would be traveling into the future. What is known as time dilation, these people would experience time progression differently. A year on the ship could be several years back at home. Upon such a realization, the human race was hit with this dilemma as well. Was there a limit to how fast that can you go?
Nothing could reach faster than the speed of light. It is a rule of the cosmos, for the most part. For humanity, there had to be a way to overcome these hurdles. We continue our journey as stars zip past us more and more. The entire scenery changes before us as we now begin to look at a new region of space in the Milky Way Galaxy. We are close to the great center of the galaxy. We can almost see the grand spiral arms of the spinning motion where billions of stars reside. Even before the advent of the fusion drives, humans had been witnessing the natural events that occurred. In 2019 of their calendars, they had found this object that we are closing upon now. It was a remarkable discovery as we began to see a massive trail of lit dust. The matter belonged to something that had reached hypervelocity speeds. It would have required a rather extensive amount of energy to do such a thing, and they were fully aware of it as well.
We reach near the trail as we begin to catch up to this moving object slowly. What is known to them as S5-HVS1 is nothing more than an A-type Dwarf star that has been flung out of the galaxy. Located almost 29,000 light-years from the Sol system, this dying burning ball of gas might have been spared a fated end from the supermassive black hole in the center of the galaxy. It was believed that this star was part of a binary system that was being pulled into the maw of the black hole. One of the dancing stars that spun together watched as its other partner was devoured. Their gravitational hold on each other was broken and tossed into the emptiness of space. S5-HVS1 instead creates a bright cone in front of it as we are parallel with its incredible velocity. The star has reached speeds of over 1,700 kilometers per second. Even if it is less than 1% of the speed of light, the momentum it is moving is incredible. As the white dwarf star bleeds out, it will eventually be left as an empty black husk as it leaves the galaxy entirely into the great voids beyond.  Even if humanity knew it would never reach this object anytime soon, it did bring some hope that there were ways to achieve faster and faster velocities.
Eventually, the great gift of Gabatrix would come to fruition. Humanity had finally found a way to reach other worlds. Instead of trying to beat time dilation and breaking the barrier of reaching speeds faster than the speed of light, a new solution had arrived. The ability to fold space safely had been performed. Reverse engineering the fabled alien technology found on Mars would bring forth the new age of exploration, colonization, and salvation for the beleaguered race. But, of course, the very concept of achieving faster speeds and velocities would remain within much of humanity’s heart. Perhaps one day, new advancements will allow their vessels and vehicles to progress this ever-growing desire. Folding space is only the beginning.
We say goodbye to the glowing white star of S5-HVS1. It is left to its fate as it sputters away from us. Perhaps one day, some other civilization will see the remains of this object and wonder where it came from. We come to a complete halt as we begin to reverse course back to the inner interior of the Milky Way Galaxy. Once again, the other distant stars begin to zip past us as we reach phenomenal speeds. The stellar matter comes and disappears. The great light of the center of the galaxy vanishes and becomes dark.
You are curious as to the humans right now, aren’t you? It was challenging to witness their events after their first peace treaty with the T’rintar clan. Even with the Gabatrix experiment and the success it brought forth, it has raised questions on the continued survival of their species. The “Age of Gabatrix,” as the humans termed, is coming to a debatable close. The end of an era of celebration was marked with the inevitable passing of the great pioneer. The descendants of the early explorers have rested and become complacent with their newfound luxuries. There is no name yet for this period of time, a sign that things have become uncertain.
The realization that they had found the former civilizations of the dinosaurs was a shock to all. So was it felt through all the Itrean clans and United Worlds’ Alliance. In order for us to continually learn of humanity, we need to delve further into their journey into the cosmos. It is their year of 2349, near the conclusion of a never-ending conflict in which the human race faced utter annihilation against the alien reptilian clans. Colony after colony was beginning to fall. Eutera and Cipra were taken with others teetering on being taken next. It is one month before the alliance with the T’rintar clan.
For now, humanity is on its own as we get closer and closer to our destination. The constellation of Pictor comes into view. The cluster of stars holds one location that we are vested into now. We must hurry as an event is taking place if we are to witness it. Multiple stars fly past us as we near the singular star system. The star we are closing in is a K-Type star. Our journey is sure to take us to this planet again someday. For now, we zoom in on the outermost planet of the star system. Following an elliptical orbit is a planet of interest. Founded by the former unified African governments of Earth is the colony of Oshun.
We slow down as the great blue planet is seen. It is a world that is almost completely covered in water. In the distance are the three small moons that orbit it. In reality, Oshun isn’t much of a world to look at from this distance. A water world may seem interesting, but from here, it is simply a blue planet. Of course, there is an activity that is happening on it. There is a viable atmosphere and in the southern equator is a massive spinning cyclone that continues to move in a straight line.
We close in on the world. At this distance, we can faintly see one of the tiny island continents where humanity has settled. Finally, it is here that we can see a series of flashing lights. No…..these are explosions. What we are seeing is something unnatural and artificially made.
It is a battle that is taking place. We have arrived to bear witness to the Battle of Oshun. The humans of this colony are in the fight for their lives. By now, we can see that we are getting to the near end of this conflict. A small Itrean fleet had arrived and brought siege onto the planet. Space debris is everywhere, consisting of destroyed spaceship hulks, vaporized or scorched remains, and perhaps even former living bodies. All of it is floating in the vastness of space. By now, we are so close to Oshun that it takes up a sizeable portion of our view.
The blasts are continuing to occur as we can see seven warships ahead of us. On one side are four UHN Magellan class Battleships. The cylindrical hulls consist of the near rear-mounted spinning centripetal ring, railgun turrets mounted in the mid-dorsal and ventral sides, engine thrusters in the forward and rear, and torpedo tubes in the front. On the other side are three Itrean vessels of unknown design. Their common hull color is that of purple, further illuminated by the distant star of the system.
Two alien vessels are similar in shape and design. They are cylindrical but blockier than the UHN warships. Their hull configuration is almost the same, however. They also consist of engine thrusters in the forward and rear. They have two spinning centripetal rings near the back and have two dual-mounted railguns on the mid-dorsal and ventral sides. The forward section of the hulls is lined with heavy-duty CIWS gatling guns, small missile launchers, and small fin-like protrusions. These two warships are slightly bigger than the Magellan battleships. The other alien warship is significantly smaller. It appears to be a scout ship or support ship of some kind. It consists of a single centripetal ring near the center, large engines on the front and back, smaller guns, and four large tentacle-like protrusions near the aft section. In the front are a fin-like protruding array and a single railgun.
It is an all-out battle. All the ships show signs of damage to various degrees. Blast marks and small fires are clearly seen on the hulls as their internal atmospheres threaten to be vented into space. Missiles are being launched from various areas of Oshun and its moons but are getting shot down by the small CIWS guns of the Itrean warships. The two large alien battleships are moving slowly in a stand-off match of gunfire against the human military. Hypervelocity rounds are fired from their dual-mounted railguns onto the Magellans as the Magellan battleships return fire. The blasts from the guns produce a beautiful blue and purple colorization as the shells are ejected into space. Meanwhile, the single small alien warship is focused on the planet. Its single railgun is firing at the planet’s surface as it seems to ignore the larger ships in their dance to destroy one another.
By now, the ships are so close in their fight that it is impossible to avoid the hypervelocity rounds. The Itrean ships are accurate in their shots. One of the UHN battleships takes a direct hit in the mid-section of the vessel by the dual salvos, quickly ripping into its hull and almost punching through to the other side. Meanwhile, the UHN has numbers on its side as one of the warships fires back. Its railgun flies and shatters the top portion of the Itrean battleship in turn. The fin-like protrusion is blown clean off as the shell breaks the supports of the centripetal ring.
It is a fight to the death. There is nothing else in far orbit as both fleets are shrinking in numbers. The great debris behind it is a sign that numerous warships of both sides are getting wiped out. The UHN seems to have the upper hand, but it is still a fierce battle. Tracer fire fills the spectrum as the CIWS guns of the Itrean battleships are shooting down another wave of missiles that are coming their way. The small alien warship continues to fire its small railgun turret towards the southern equator, most likely one of the tiny islands firing its planetary torpedoes towards the alien fleet. Its bow is aimed directly at the planet.
We turn our focus towards the other pair of UHN battleships and one of the Itrean warships. The engines on the ships are off as the ships continue to exchange salvos of railgun fire. There is a successful strike as one of the battleships has managed to score a direct hit on the ventral railgun turret. It shatters the hull area and the components as it blows out into space. However, the dorsal guns answer back as they fire a railgun round in one barrel and a non-hypervelocity nuclear-tipped shell in the other. The speed and trajectory of the shots quickly gain distance between the simultaneous exchange. The alien tungsten round slams into the rear portion of the power generator. Ripping the interior section, the ship suddenly begins to lose power as the armor has been breached. The AIO turrets try to fire a spread of flak bursts towards the nuclear shell, but the loss of power causes the system to seize momentarily. With a burrowed hole in the ship, the nuclear round escapes destruction and enters into the damaged breach.
A nuclear blast erupts in space. Technically, the explosion is little more than a violent burst of radiation as there is little air to convey the concussive force. The bright light flows outward momentarily, consuming the visual spectrum, but the nuclear shell has found an internal space of atmosphere. Inside the ship, it rips and spreads outward. The concussive force is beyond what the interior hulls can ever withstand. The UHN battleship is incinerated from the inside out as only a few surviving pieces of debris flow outward into space. The bright light fades as the warship has been annihilated, its crew never even feeling it.
We continue to zoom in on the single UHN battleship that continues to ready another salvo of railgun round onto the damaged Itrean warship. Finally, we get close enough to see the hull registry of the warship. It is named the “UHN Tsunenaga,” written in both English and Chinese. A single sizeable blasted hole could be seen near the forward section of the missile tubes. We fly through this hole as we can see the emergency seal panels have engaged to prevent the loss of atmosphere. Through the interior, we can start to see the chaos that the ship is undergoing. Emergency repair crews traverse the passageways. Dressed in red and blue jumpsuits and magnetic boots, they keep themselves braced in the zero-gravity environment.
It is here that our journey is complete, to witness a pair of crew members that are struggling to move towards the bow section of the battleship. The great passageway is brightly lit as tiny pieces of debris hover in the air. Red and blue lights slowly flash in the overhead areas to indicate that the Tsunenaga is in general quarters. One of the crew members is carrying various tools with him. He is a young adult with a fair but slightly tan complexion. His short-cut dark hair and facial features are reminiscent of that of a Polynesian or Micronesian of former Earth. On his nametag is the name “Neo.”
The other crew member is a woman of mixed complexion. She has long dark hair tied up in a bun to prevent it from floating freely in zero gravity. She carries additional tools with her, but her tablet is one of the things that her eyes are glued on as she walks behind Neo. Her name tag has the name “Jade” written on it.
“God…..” the woman said with a Martian accent. “The UHN Hyecho has been destroyed….”
“Come on,” Neo replied with an accent similar to that of the Oshunian people. “We need to reach the missile launchers!”
They continued to move as fast as their feet could go. They could hear the sounds of the dorsal railgun opening fire. It was very faint, but the sound reverberated throughout through the hull. Neo’s adrenaline was in full swing. A part of him now felt like he had a deep regret on serving on this ship. The idea of encountering an alien race was beyond understanding. The fact that they were hostile only meant that things were in dire straits. The room didn’t wouldn’t take long to reach it, but the fact that everything was getting rocked around and under attack changed everything. Now it felt like he was making the longest traverse of his life. They had only reached a third of the way there.
“I…..just want to let you know, Neo, that it was a pleasure to be your friend,” Jade told him.
“We…..we….have to make it,” Neo struggled to say. “It is a matter of life or death. They need to get the missile launchers working again if we can try to fire back at them.”
“I agree. I just wanted to say that…..because…..”
“I know,” he said as he continued to move. “You have been kind to me as well since I transferred to here half a year ago.”
A part of Neo thought of doing a blow-through in the vast open corridor. This would involve leaping and using momentum to take you to the bow section of the ship. It would shorten the trip drastically, but the vessel could engage in evasive maneuvers at any second. With the lack of gravity, both could be implanted into the deck and walls the moment that the ship jolted. Severe injury would be the end result even in an emergency situation such as this.
“We have to make it…..” Jade said to herself. “I still want to be with my family.”
“You’ll get that chance,” Neo tried to assert. He knew that he was trying to cheer her up.
“How…….the Itreans are trying to take Oshun. If they do it, then…..”
“They won’t,” he interrupted.
Jade could see the lines of data feed that were coming through her tablet. It depicted the schematics of the Tsunenaga with a separate text of events. The forward launchers were offline. The forward-most bulkhead had sealed the breach, but the Itrean round’s unique structure had to be more than just tungsten. It was some sort of special blend of metals designed to break and splinter inside once the ship took a hit. While the main shell would keep going, the shrapnel it would emit would go in all directions in the interior. At its speeds, the fragments could tear into machinery, flesh, and hardware. There was almost no response from the missile room, except that all but one of the crew was alive. He was in badly needed assistance to get the equipment working again.
“Are the other planets going to send reinforcements?” Neo asked.
“No,” Jade replied. “At least from what I saw.”
“They have to send help……please send help to us.”
“Didn’t they announce earlier that they wouldn’t?” there was a hint of dread in her voice. Even Neo hated to admit to the truth. So little was known about the Itreans. All that was known was that they consisted of clans. They had warships color-coded to their identity. It seemed that the alien race had an almost infinite amount of resources. He could only imagine what would happen if these intruders wiped out the rest of the defense fleet. The planet would be next. Would Oshun be another Cipra? What if they were like the other clan that kidnapped the people of Eutera? Mars, Cebravis, New Olympia, and Batrice refused to lend any further vessels to assist in hopes of protecting the most critical locations in the UWA.
Neo knew that his life could be extinguished at any moment. A single nuclear round or well-placed shot would result in instantaneous death. He could at least feel that his end would be quick and painless. His only regret was the one thing that he wanted to do more than anything. He reached the halfway point in the ship when the vision of the street races filled his thoughts. The thrill of driving his motorcycle loomed and provided a sense of comfort on the battlefield. How much he dreamed of being back on the ground.
“We’ll make it,” Neo said.
“Their firing!” Jade yelled out loud. “Brace!”
Neo grabbed the small side brace of the passageway and waited. In space, the damaged Itrean battleship had its working dual-guns aimed at the UHN Tsunenaga. Suddenly, it fired one from each barrel as it did the tiniest of adjustments between each shot. The trail of blue and purple particles quickly dissipated in space as two hypervelocity rounds were expelled directly into the UHN warship.
Almost simultaneously, the two shells struck the battleship at once. One struck the dorsal bridge of the ship, blowing through the entire interior and into space. Atmosphere, bodies, debris, and even limbs were expelled into space. The other shell, however……
Neo almost never felt it. It happened in a split second, and only his mind could relive the events as best as his eyes could capture. The other shell hit the bow section at least thirty feet from his location. The hypervelocity round had entered and exited from the one side and out the other side of the vessel. Shrapnel pieces blew through the decks and radiated outward in all directions. He barely heard the screeching sound that they made. He was in front of the blast as his body almost shielded Jade from the raining metal. It bounced around until the bulkheads finally absorbed enough of it to slow their advance. Something was wrong, however. He heard the sound that rang his ears a little bit. There was the feeling of something hot that happened below one of his legs.
It was pure horror in his eyes. His right leg was gone. One of the metal pieces had flown and tore it completely off. Blood was raining in all directions and floating around harmlessly into space. It happened so fast that his adrenaline was masking the pain. He watched as the leg was floating away. He had but one response.
“AHHH!” he screamed at the top of his lungs.
Jade barely had a chance to respond as she too realized what had happened. A small piece of metal had grazed her right arm, but she knew that she was fine. Neo had saved her from the worst, but the cost was monumental. The horror struck her as well as she could hear his screams combined with the fact that he was losing blood. For a few seconds, she shook a little bit as her mind was trying to comprehend what had happened.
“Neo!” Jade snapped out of her shock. She could see that he was losing blood as he was starting to run out of breath. She practically let go of all her tools as it dawned on what she could do. The man was bleeding out as it continued to flow out into the compartment. Slow-moving pieces of metal were floating around as she saw one of her tools that she could use. If she didn’t act fast, it was possible for Neo to bleed out and die. She slapped the magnetized tablet to the wall as she grabbed a sealant projector on the floating gear. Used to mend bulkheads and parts together, the sealing foam might work.
“Help me!” Neo yelled out. “My leg! HELP!”
“I’m here, Neo!” Jade replied as she grabbed his shoulder. She took the tube-like device and held him in place.
Even with the shock and awe of the event, there was a slight amount of clarity in everything. Neo could see that Jade was trying to get ahold of him as the blood continued to flow. He could see her bring the tool to his severed leg. He didn’t look as the emitter activated. The foam began to flow outward and apply to the mess. They both knew that this form of sealant foam was not exactly designed to mend tissue together. In fact, it was never meant to be applied in this particular fashion, but it was all that they had. The foam would spread outward and begin to harden immediately. Forming a red cap over the cut area, it was working.
“H……hurts……” Neo grimaced as the pain was starting to him. He was shaken as he could see that the bleeding was slowing down. Jade was working as fast as she could, applying another firm layer over the wound. The bleeding had been averted as it formed the perfect clot over it.
“I got it!” Jade said as she practically let go of her tool. “I sealed the bleeding!”
There was a minor form of lightheadedness coming from Neo. The bleeding had ended, but he lost some blood. His brain and body were still trying to get ahold of everything that had happened. It was here that Jade’s instincts were in full swing. She looked at the tablet and could see the results of the Itrean barrage. The damage had become near catastrophic. The main command bridge was gone, and the forward bulkheads had sealed ahead of them. There was no hope of ever reaching the missile launchers, and one of the repair teams had suffered a horrific loss of a limb. The battle on the ship was becoming a lost cause. Jade frantically grabbed her tablet and tapped a button to call for help.
“Medical team respond!” She yelled out to the tablet. “This is repair team Gamma. We have taken injuries……located compartment Level 1……loss of right leg…….shit……”
She shook a little bit as she waited to hear a word of it. Finally, an overhead announcement was called out.
“Primary bridge is out,” a male voice called out in the announcement. “I, Lieutenant Josiah, am assuming command. Prepare for evasive maneuvers!”
There was no response as they could hear the other railgun on the Tsunenaga fire. Neo naturally grabbed the brace as Jade held onto him. The forward thrusters were firing as the battleship was limping backward. As pain rode through Neo’s system, he faintly recalled seeing the metal pieces begin to float forward along with his severed leg. He looked away from it. It might as well be miles away from both of them. The inertia began to cease as the two were accustomed to the new movement. Their magnetic boots kept them anchored to the deck.
“Can’t….feel……too much…..pain….” Neo said as he was trying to keep control of his breathing.
“Medical team to repair team Gamma, report to the medical bay,” another male voice called out on the tablet.
“En route,” Jade replied. She grabbed Neo as he faintly noted that he was being pulled. Jade was going to do a blow-through. With no gravity and one grab of his arm, she leaped and let inertia take them down to the center portion of the warship. She could only hope that they would both survive this encounter. It was beyond risky as the ship could move in another direction at a moment's notice.
Things started to become a daze to Neo. He closed his eyes as he felt that he was getting weak. He dared not look down to the forward compartment. He had to say goodbye to his leg. There was no hope in retrieving it.
“Just……want…..to go home…….” Neo stated.
As Jade considered his words, she had to think at the spot. The medical bay was not far from the shuttle bay. It was best to be ready if the inevitable were to occur. The Tsunenaga might not even survive another salvo from the Itrean battleship. As they flew down the passageway, she briefly looked at the tablet. The UHN battleship, despite the damages, was still in the fight. The problem was that it was reversing course, and there wasn’t much room for the ship to go. That direction would start to take it closer to the planet.
It worked. Jade reached the main elevator that would lead to the medical bay. She pressed the button on the panel as she touched the deck. Neo barely felt anything by now as his eyes would open and close. The lift’s doors had opened as they both entered it. The one significant advantage of the lack of gravity was that it made things easier to traverse for the most part. Jade was not a physically strong individual, but it didn’t matter as Neo was weightless. His one leg pressed the deck plating as the elevator started to go up. He didn’t even see that Jade had pressed the buttons on the lift control to traverse a deck above. There was a sudden shift as the elevator was lifting upward.
Neo blacked out momentarily. The loss of blood was taking its toll. Then, he remembered that he was in the elevator and now was in the passageway leading to the mid aft compartments adjacent to the medical room. Wounded individuals were gathering as corpsmen and doctors were treating the injured just outside the door. Emergency straps were in place to hold the people in as the ship threatened to shift or move.
“I have him!” Jade called out.
Neo’s head turned to look towards the forward passageway of the new deck. Far ahead was the sealed bulkhead. It was leading to the area where the railgun round had damaged the vicinity and destroyed the dorsal bridge section. He barely felt his body being strapped into the side bulkhead as he could hear one of the medics holding a medical scanner of some sort near his body. His eyesight was going in and out as he was drifting in and out of consciousness.
“Loss of a lot of blood,” another female voice echoed in his head.
“I used our sealants on his severed leg,” Jade responded.
“Good call, but….shit…..let me give him something for it. You used Erdinsealant?”
“Yes.”
“It can poison him. I’m giving him a pain reliever sedative and coagulant stimulant.”
Neo briefly opened his eyes to see a woman in front of him that pulled two small hypo needles out of her pocket. She stuck each one into his leg. The pain was so much that he barely even felt the medications being applied to him. He didn’t know how much time had passed, but when he was consciously aware of it, the pain was muted in his body. At times, he wondered if this was just a bad dream and that he would wake up soon.
“I need to give him something else to treat for the toxic effects that sealant has,” the corpsman stated.
“No……” Jade said as she looked at her tablet. “They are firing again. Everyone, brace yourselves!”
Deep in space, the reversing warship was still in a slugging match against its adversary. The UHN battleship’s ventral railgun fired as the round took several seconds before successfully hitting the front midsection of the alien battleship. The damage seemed to have some impact as it struck one of the starboard CIWS batteries, tearing it into pieces before penetrating deep into the framework. Meanwhile, the alien warship readjusted its only functional dual railgun at the Tsunenaga.
It fired two more rounds, taking at least eight seconds for the hypervelocity round to strike the centripetal ring of the UHN ship. Living compartments from the ring were blown out into space as the shell kept going. It finally hit the power generator in the aft section of the ship. Another non-hypervelocity round was heading dangerously close behind. Much as the fate of the previous warship, the combination of the hypervelocity and nuclear round salvo was being used. The flak guns hastily tried to hit the incoming round when power fluctuated inside the ship. Lights on the vessel flickered as the guns were temporarily knocked out. However, unlike the fate of the previous ship, the flak guns did hit enough shrapnel into the nuclear shell that it diverted the shot off course a little bit. Instead of heading towards the blown-in hole of the hypervelocity round, the shell was now heading towards the vessel’s midsection.
Neo had passed out again. A part of him felt like he was in heaven as the pain relievers gave him a form of euphoria. It would only be temporary as he could feel the ship be rocked from the shell that struck it. His closed eyelids could momentarily tell him that power went in and out. Had they taken another hit? He couldn’t tell. All he knew was that his partner was there beside him.
It happened. The nuclear shell struck near the mid-portion of the hull as a powerful radiation burst went outward. The blinding light filled the area. Exploding in the vacuum of space, the concussive shockwave was primarily mute, but it seemed catastrophic. The massive amount of heat generated flowed across the starboard portion of the Tsunenga’s hull instantly but quickly dissipated. The emergency bulkheads barely held. When the light finally left, the battleship was sent in a slow spin towards the planet.
Neo thought he heard screaming as his eyes opened. Power had gone out entirely with only emergency lights kicked on. Even a powerful warship such as the Tsunenga couldn’t take a beating such as this. It was rated to handle a nuclear blast, but not when it was continuously being battered like this. The EMP blast was enough to punch through the weakened bulkheads and knock out much of the equipment. There was a massive tug as the ship was being pushed as inertia could be felt throughout the interior. The straps were doing their part in keeping him in place.
“This is the acting CO. All hands, abandon ship!” an overhead announcement called out. “I repeat, abandon ship!”
Even with the euphoria, Neo understood enough of what that meant. The ship of his posting was lost. Was the battle a defeat? He couldn’t think as he blacked out again.
*******
Darkness and black…….
The inertia was mostly stable. Where was he? Neo had no answer. His eyes opened up as he was on a stretcher. Was he in a shuttle? It had to be. The large cabin was well-lit and smaller. He could see numerous individuals, mostly wounded, that were in there. It was so difficult to make out.
“Ah…..help……” Neo tried to say. He could see another corpsman put his hand on him but couldn’t see his face.
“It will be alright, Neo,” the soft male voice told him. “You are stable. We are going to make it.”
Neo tried to look around in the cabin. The pain medication was in full effect. He was injected with multiple kinds of drugs to keep his body alive. It had to be countering the poison that the sealant was giving off from his leg. However, it was messing with his mind at times.
His leg……he didn’t want to look down. He could only barely make out so many people in the shuttle. People that he knew. Some of them made it, but there were only at least fifteen that he could see. The Tsunenga had way more crew than this. Most of them were the medical staff and injured in the shuttle. His eyes went toward the display screen. It was providing a live feed of the battle.
The shuttle had just exited from the hangar of the great battleship. From the cameras, it showed the incredible vastness of space. The battle was still going. There was only one Itrean warship remaining. It was the same one that disabled the Tsunenga, with its single operating turret being the clear indicator. The main blockading fleet had been eliminated or disabled, but the Tsunenga did manage to score a critical hit.
The Itrean battleship was heavily damaged. Even if it was the last of the battleships to survive, much of the frame showed numerous hits. Fires were venting from certain sections as they went out into space. Its centripetal rings were blasted to pieces. In its last vestiges of trying to stay alive, its few CIWS guns were trying to destroy another volley of missiles but failed to do so. Neo watched as a salvo of nuclear warheads flew towards it. There had to be at least seven missiles, but the gatling guns and intercept missiles it was launching only destroyed half of them. The remaining salvo struck the hull almost in tandem. A nuclear flash erupted as the Itrean warship was obliterated. There was a slight cheer coming from the shuttle crew, but it wasn’t over yet. Neo almost had nothing to comment on it as the camera feed switched over to other events transpiring.
The Tsunenga was dead in space and heading towards the outer atmosphere of the planet. It was such an odd feeling to witness. He could swear that he saw the other shuttle was getting launched out into space and just at the right time. The cylindrical frame of the warship was in free fall towards the planet. The internal compartment began to rock a little bit as the vessel was experiencing the beginning vestiges of atmospheric entry. Flames began to erupt as the Tsunenga was being consumed in hellfire. Spinning out of control, the former battered battleship was being torn apart by the entry. Before the camera switched away from it, Neo swore that he saw the ship beginning to break in half. The combined intense heat had cooked the emergency bulkheads and weakened the frame. The remaining pieces and any crew left in it would have nothing but the vast ocean for their watery grave.
“Did……we….win?” Neo struggled to ask.
“Not yet,” a female voice echoed near him. “There is one last ship left.”
Neo almost blacked out again. For a second, he swore he was seeing things dancing around his eyes. Finally, his vision cleared out enough to see that the camera feed was focused on one last object in space. It was hard to see as the shuttle was conducting its atmospheric entry. Flames were picking up from the outside of the hull as the intense friction was at its peak.
He could see it, but just barely. The camera was focused on one last purple-colored object. It was the final warship of the Itrean invasion fleet, the scout ship or support ship. It had made a run towards Oshun. By now, it was using its vectoring thrusters to try to do a proper entry phase. It was a terrifying sight for some. The Itreans were trying to enter the atmosphere or land, but they didn’t have to wait any longer.
The CIWS guns were not active on the small ship, possibly because of the entry. The alien vessel's bottom hull had gotten hot due to the intense friction. Suddenly, eight missiles came screaming towards it from space. Did they come from Orsa’s moon, or was it one of the UHN battleships that were stationed there? Most of the guided munitions disintegrated from the heat, but it didn’t matter. At least two of them struck the midsection of the support ship. It was not a massive explosion, but it was enough to tear the ship in half. The centripetal ring crumbled apart as its spine was snapped in two. Both of the pieces began to separate as it was slowly burning up from the intense heat. Further cheering could be heard as the cabin continued to shake. For Neo, the battle had been won, but he wouldn’t be able to celebrate. His semi-delusional state was starting to put him somewhere else.
“I…….want to…….race……again……” he said. It came out as a whisper amongst those that were happier that the battle had been won. No one heard it but himself. He began to picture it over and over in his mind. He imagined seeing the motorcycle and having complete control of it. He could see and feel the intensity of moving faster than the others on Oshun.
“I……will……race again…..” he affirmed himself. “I will……race again…….” It was his last words before he blacked out……
Chapter 2: February 2nd, 2350 AD
“Men and women! Welcome to the Oshun-400 racing event!” the overhead announcement called out. The enthusiastic call had riled the population in a layer of cheer. By now, Neo had gotten used to this.
It had been three months later. The memories of the distant battle seemed vacant in Neo’s mind, at least for now. He was taking deep breaths as he was thinking about how the day was going to progress. He had the racetrack memorized in his head over and over again.
He placed his hand to his heart and could feel the black and brown jacket. He knew that he was about to walk out into the roaring crowds of the streets of Oshun. The people had been waiting for this. Ever since the alleged alliance treaty with the T’rintar, one of the clans of the Itreans, all seemed to be at a state of relative peace and calm. The population had demanded to see the revival of their favorite past sports. The entertainment field was uneasy but fell wholeheartedly into what the people wanted. So much had happened in the first few months than what would happen in the entirety of five years of development. Aliens had become allies. An unknown opponent had become a friend.
Of course, for Neo, that wasn’t what was on his mind as he took one last look at the surrounding environment. The makeshift tent was his place of refuge as he had a pleasant view of the splashing ocean water. Residing on the continent of Girinhi Kinshasha, he was in the hub of the tourist industry of Oshun. The rich and fanciful had complete claim over this region of the great metropolis. The entrance of the tent would allow the scent of the salty seas into the area. It perforated his senses allowing his mind to be at ease. His tent was filled with his belongings as he sat down not far from his workbench.
Everything was supplied to him. The sponsorships were behind him like flies stuck to glue. Tools filled the brought in cabinets. Parts littered the vicinity. Engineers and mechanics were always promised to him, but he never needed an actual pit crew. He wanted to do everything for himself.
The foldout chair was positioned so that he had a perfect view of the ocean. His racing stripes and clothing radiated from the light blue and semi-purple sky from the distant sun. He would shift at times as he could feel the slight tingle coming from his right leg.
His leg…..for a moment, his mind would momentarily be distracted as he looked at it. He tapped it with his palm as he could feel the sensors on it were not entirely aligned correctly. The augmented leg served as a viable replacement to what he lost, but it wasn’t 100% perfect. He would move his toes and could tell that his fourth and fifth toe wouldn’t move as it was supposed to underneath the boot.
“Again…..that damn malfunction…….” Neo sighed. “I’ll need to take it apart and find out what is causing it.”
The cheering crowd was beginning to pick up. There was the distant sound of the announcer that was calling out the racer’s names as they were heading to their respected vehicles. It was nearing time. Everything was set. The tent felt so empty that it had Neo recollecting what was going to happen. It was missing the most important thing.
“Ahgh…..” he said. “Even with the motorcycle, it isn’t enough. Now it is too quiet. Got to do this……got to get up.”
He stood up as he could see that his right augmented leg was going to work as it should. It would have to. He started to head out of the tent. His eyes would have to adjust to the glare that the sunlight gave off.
The moment his boots touched the sand, he squinted his eyes. It would only take a few seconds as he could see outside. Most of the racers had already left their tents. The ocean breeze would kick in as Neo had an entire scene of events. Behind him and away from the center of the beach was the great metropolis of Girinhi Kinshasha. The city encompassed the whole continent. Skyscrapers of various designs resided away from the coastline. Multiple ports were to his left that allowed fishing vessels to come and go. Not far in the ocean was one of the large space cruise liners. These interstellar ships could easily land and float on the water or take off and go to the next system. Vacationers would have the ability to watch the races that Neo would be a part of.
Away from the tents was the vast array of crowds. People from all over the colonies had come to see the great races. What had started off as questionably illegal street races in the great city had turned into a multi-billion mard industry. Racing had taken off as one of the many popular sports, if not, one of the more beloved. It became the soul of Oshun that helped prop its tourist industry as it was widely publicized. The UWA was watching. Needed now more than ever, the races would fulfill the almost destroyed morale of the population. Neo was fully aware of all of this.
A burgeoning smile filled his face as he started to make way towards the starting lines. He could make out the crowds. Many of them were the Oshunian people. Their dark complexions were symbolic of the former African colony, but there was so much more. People who descended from all the former nations of ancient Earth were there. Everyone had to see it as the music began to pick up. Speakers were playing a sort of steel drum, lute, and Chinese flute instrumental music. Occasionally, it would be followed with a dance synthesized rhythm that would come and go.  It helped to establish the meaning and atmosphere.
“We want to welcome everyone to the great races of the Oshun-400,” the enthusiastic announcer called out. “This is the final qualifying race for those that wish to be a part of the Oshun-500 and the United Worlds’ Alliance Light Vehicle Races!”
There was cheering in the crowds as another racer was waking past the arranged rows of people. Neo recognized this individual immediately. The female racer had former Chinese features on her. She had red hair and crimson dyed eyebrows. The Martian woman had the best equipment as she was getting closer to her motorcycle. Brazen and outright obnoxious, he hated being around her. The crowds cheered the moment that they saw her face.
“Our first racer is nothing more than our grand champion of every race in the last nine Oshun-500 and UWALVR competitions,” the announcer continued. “Our famed and well known Meifen Lu!”
Meifen gave her arrogant smirk to the crowd. Men and women were almost tossing flowers in her direction. She would do her familiar nine-finger salute, almost holding up all her fingers to the crowd to let everyone know of how far she got. Her front teeth would be pressed over her lip when she did it. Neo knew that this woman was incredible in her skills as a racer. Even her bike was a beefed-up quad motorcycle. It had to be the only one of its design. Heavily modified, the vehicle had a series of red and gray stripes on it. In the center was a pod-like cockpit in which the driver could lay down on their stomach between the front and back set of tires. Her motorcycle was in the rear most section of the motorcycles.
Neo sighed as he continued his slow walk. He knew that he had a long way to go when it came to even win against the champions. Meifen alone was all but guaranteed to win, but maybe things would be different in this year of racing. If the rumors were true, then it would add a new hurdle in the UWALVR. Even now, his eyes could befall the various members of the crowd. He could see some of the new aliens. The Itreans were an adjustment at first but gained recognition amongst the populace. Most of the T’rintar clan consisted of the Yutilians, a subspecies of anthro reptilians. Their short stature consisted of various shades of green, yellow, or blue smooth scales. They stood at an average height of four feet and stood on digitigrade legs. They were the supposed decedents of dinosaurs and related to the velociraptors of ancient Earth. They had a series of feathers that protruded from their heads, arms, and long tails. In many aspects, they were very similar to human beings but were generally shorter and had pointy-like snouts. Each one wore a different set of clothing and styles that reflected the region that they either came from or part of the vicinity of here.
Many people had a curiosity towards them. All of these aliens were women, and for a good reason. It was the primary influencer in why they made an alliance with the UWA for a reason. Neo stopped thinking about it as he could see the next racer approach the starting line. He also already knew of this one. Oluchi was another racing veteran. He was a slightly older man with a dark complexion and short-cut black hair. He was the son of one of the great founders of all Oshun’s street races. While he was the grand champion for some time, Meifen had taken it. Regardless, this man never gave up. He would always win second place and would drive one of the more interesting racing bikes. His UBX-11 had been modified into a partial hoverbike design. The front portion of the gray and black frame carried the repulsorlift engine that kept it afloat over the pavement. The rear portion had a large wheel that connected with the pavement. Supposedly, it was a more traditional racing bike design that followed its lineage to former Earth. It wasn’t an enclosed pod-like the other racing bikes were, and the driver would sit slightly more upright as well.
“We welcome one of our other racing veterans to the match,” the announcer called out. “The great racer Oluchi Vander, son of the retired Ken Vander. This will be the racer’s final competition before his retirement. Everyone give a round of applause to him!”
Oluchi was not the man who seemed to stand with the crowds that much. He would give a short nod to everyone as they cheered him on. It seemed that most of the audience was used to him. He was never a prideful individual and always just let the actions do the talking. Regardless, the fact that this would be his final year made him take more notice towards the population. It was as if he wanted to ensure that he would remember it for the rest of his life. Neo knew that he still needed to sit down and talk with him before moving on to his other planned career.
By now, Neo had reached the main street and passed the set of lines. Many of the audience turned their heads to see him. He could hear a couple of women that were calling out his name.
“Neo!” a random woman called.
“Yeah, you go, man!” another person said.
Neo could see the enthusiasm. It felt a little bit comforting as he could see much of the crowd that lined the fenced edges of the road. He could see the scantily clad clothing that many of the women wore. Oshun was always known for its freedoms. Some of the women would stand topless as their breasts would hang freely. Men, women, children, and aliens were all present.
“And our final racer to join us for the competition is Neo Kekoa,” the announcer explained. “He is a UHN veteran and survivor of the Battle of Oshun. Runner up to reach the Oshun-500 and UWALVR championships. Everyone, give him a big hand!”
There was another cheer and round of applause from the crowds as they looked upon him. He continued to smile and wave at everyone as he walked into the streets. For a little bit, he tried not to let the over joyous crowd get to him. The glory of making it this far was something that he had to keep going with. Meifen would act like she was basking in the glory, but he wanted to be a little bit like Oluchi in time when it came to the people. He stopped thinking about it as he looked at his vehicle that was fourth in line for the six racing vehicles. It was there that he saw his parked motorcycle as it made him smile at it.
The UHN originally used the decommissioned Bandigara class motorbike. Designed for every sort of environment, they were used for reconnaissance duties and light support on the ground. It consisted of two wheels, one in the front and one in the back. The frame design consisted of a gyroscopic adjustable manifold, much like most of the bikes. The center of the pod was wide open for him to climb in. The pod itself could easily keep the driver sealed into a comfortable environment, even if there was no atmosphere outside. On the sides of the motorcycle consisted of two M18 machine guns that had been clearly deactivated and unloaded of any ammunition. Purposely, it always seems to make a few of the people point at it in the form of glee. The blue and red stripes lined the gray frame. Much like many of the vehicles of its design, many of these pod-like motorcycles were not that tall. This was mostly for the fact that the driver was lying inside them.
“Win at least fifth place, and we’ll be good for the rest, old gal,” Neo told his bike as he felt the apprehension of climbing into the pod. The man could feel the shock absorbers easily adjust to the additional weight applied to it. There was more than enough room for him to lay down on his stomach. The padding was mended and folded to hold his entire frame with ease. His eyes were attuned to a display board, with his arms and hands naturally upright to grip the small steering wheel. As his boots pressed the backpedals, he could see that he was entirely inside. He pressed a side button as the pod window closed, sealing him inside.
In the motorcycle, Neo turned his head up as he initiated the warmup sequence. He made sure that he was comfortable. Unlike many of the other motorcycles, having a body that laid flat in a pod meant that the cushioning had to be equally as comfortable. When he pressed the first startup, the electric engine’s battery activated. The small quantum computer core system turned on and showed a boot-up sequence. The display switched on as the front cameras of the bike fed into the screen. Technically, he would always be looking at a screen rather than the outside world. All initial checks showed up as green. The tiny speakers would allow him to hear the announcers and support checkpoint crews. A separate system in the audio did enable him to listen to the outside audience.
“So far……so good,” Neo commented. He could see the camera feed as he looked ahead of the motorcycle. In front were the three other motorcycles positioned on opposite ends of the road. These all consisted of the DBX-600 line of motorcycles. These were similar to the Bandigara, but they had a larger hunchback to their pods. The entire frame had a slightly more v-shape to it and protruded a little bit over the wheel frame. They were adequately color-coded with shades of red, blue, and green. Neo only knew one of the racers that drove the green one. It was a man that he barely knew as Adrian Silf. However, the other two had been losing many of the matches but still served as a viable challenge. He tilted the camera a little bit as he could see that Oluchi had gotten comfortable on his UBX-11. The repulsorlifts would naturally jolt a little bit as his weight pressed onto it. However, Neo couldn’t see directly behind him, but he knew that Meifen was there with her bigger and beefier bike. Everyone had climbed into their respected vehicles.
“All the racers have climbed into their respected vehicles,” the announcer explained. “We have received the reports of all the checkups. All racers…..START YOUR ENGINES!”
This was the queue for everyone as Neo tapped the button for the next startup phase. The rear electric engine block activated as the main drive powered up. A very slight but pleasant hum could be heard as Neo felt in place. This was home. He was at perfect peace for the most part. All the vehicles' engines had turned on as Meifen’s engines revved up and produced a rather deep hum that echoed into the crowd. Even in park, the thing could be loud as she was pressing the pedal for the crowd to enjoy.
“Showing off as she always does,” Neo quietly commented. He tried to do the same thing as he would press the pedal down a little bit to cheer on the crowd, hopefully. Unfortunately, the motorcycle was not as well designed to “show off” as hers. It was mostly not heard at all until Meifen let off the pedal a little bit. However, his augmented leg would still give a slight tingle that wasn’t as normal as expected.
“Come on, leg,” he said. “Just make it through this race, and I promise to fix you.” He felt a little more apprehension. The lack of feeling in his leg would make it a little harder to feel the accelerator pedal. He debated about switching the accelerator controls to the forward steering wheel triggers and knew that he might have to do it during the race itself.
Inside the pod, it was comfortable as Neo had one last look at the area. The great grand hotel was to his left as the beach was to his right. The rows of people were holding steady as they eagerly awaited the final call. A large aerial drone light array was situated near the starting line. It hovered in place as it began its countdown.
“I can do this…..” Neo said to himself. “I can do this…..”
The first light was red on the emitter. On cue, Neo pressed the button to mute all but essential announcements in the pod. This would be to help alleviate human auditory background noise that could be distracting. Even the announcer’s words would be silent for this race. The engines on all the motorcycles revved up even more. The second light was red as it slowly began to turn orange. The next light was yellow as it flashed.
Greenlight…..
The music kicked in as all the cyclists slammed their feet on the gas pedal. Immediately, all the motorcycles began to take off. The music that erupted was a synthesized beat rhythm that reverberated in the interior of the pod. Neo almost held his breath as he could feel the sudden inertia, but most of it was suppressed by the heavy-duty cushioning that he rested into. He could hear the roar of the engines of all the motorcycles as they took off. The race had begun.
The lines on the paved road began to move at a faster and faster speed as Neo was watching the crowds become a wall in the clear straight path. All three of the forward motorcycles kept their ground, but Oluchi’s bike was gaining ground fast. Neo was always used to this. Oluchi’s motorcycle was smaller than the others and surprisingly light. Its acceleration curve was significantly better, but Neo’s Bandigara was nothing to laugh at either. The military always had access to good equipment, and their motorcycles were equally impressive.
For now, it was a straight road for over two kilometers. His speedometer showed that he was hitting speeds of around 100 kilometers per hour. For this region of the track, it was designed to be a straightforward section. As they all picked up speed, the sound of the gripping flex tires had picked up. They were passing by block after block of buildings. All the roads that led to them had been momentarily closed off to provide safety for the pedestrians. It helped let the racers know precisely where to go if they somehow had a memory lapse. Neo already had the layout and current location on the marked track on a tiny HUD of his display. They were reaching the halfway point before they would make the turn.
The buildings and ocean water were nothing but a blur to the racers. The familiar racing music was almost a dance piece to the crowds. It had the faint electronic drumbeat and rhythmic electro harmony to it. Despite Neo’s racer having a little bit of an extra acceleration curve than the three DBX-600s, they were in the way. Much as before, the race was about overtaking them. Almost on cue, the three racers in front seemed to join together in forming a natural roadblock. This had become a favored tactic in hopes of preventing the other rear racers from punching through and essentially winning the race entirely. The one catch, however, was that the left turn was coming ahead.
On cue, Neo naturally began to slow down slightly in anticipation of the turn. The Oshun street races were fun but somewhat challenging for newcomers. Even Neo was all too aware of this. The turns were nothing more than ninety degrees to even 180 degree turns on the blocks. There were no curves or rounded roads to allow one to keep their speed. Instead, this challenged the bike engines to their core. By now, however, every racer was more than qualified to handle the stress of such maneuvering. Neo didn’t even have to hit the brakes as the momentum took him to the turn. He tugged the steering wheel a little bit to the left as the pod-like centerfold began to rotate a little bit to the left. The entire weight naturally shifted as the front, and rear tires naturally leaned to the left. Almost in unison, the other racers were doing the same.
This was naturally the more dangerous of locations for pedestrians, but one that could warrant a pleasant view at the same time. The walls that kept the people in went deep close to the buildings. This would cause the lip of the sidewalk to become available if one wanted to hug the corner, but it was risky. The tires and shocks would hit this embankment, and there were the risks of hitting other obstacles along the way. Everyone knew the risks when it came to this form of racing. Money and encouraging the tourist industry seemed to be the most significant determining factor in the motivation for this sport regardless of the dangers. The other choice, in turn, was not to cut the corner and make the hard-ninety-degree turn. Almost as if on cue, the three front racers were taking the hard turn rather than risk it.
Neo almost anticipated this as he could feel the turn hit the vehicle. Naturally, the tires flexed and adjusted to the pavement with the weight change. He was trying to aim for the opening without having to hit the curve.
As the turn was being made, he could hear the roaring engine of Meifen’s racing bike. She was very close on his tail. For once, Neo wished he could step out of his pod and spit on her vehicle every time she did it. Unfortunately, he knew it would be the only opportunity he would be able to do it.
The wheels naturally tilted as the pod made its own adjustments. Separated by the gyroscopic manifold, the pod was free to tilt or hold the position as the entire motorcycle turned. There was even an option for Neo to shut this off if need be. By now, he was more than used to it as the motorcycle completed its turn.
“Straightaway,” Neo commented. This was the most considerable portion of the racetrack. It was virtually a long straightaway road. There would be nothing but buildings as his foot was hard-pressed on the accelerator pedal. He had managed to overtake the red bike, but the other two were still ahead of them. Behind him, he could hear the roaring engine of Meifen’s motorcycle. She was still glued to Neo’s rear as he would make slight adjustments in hopes of slowing her down. Meanwhile, Oluchi was starting to slip on through the new opening. His bike was far quieter and small enough to slip past through the first opening hole easily.
It was nothing but a match of pure acceleration. This was generally the most exciting part of the track. The lines on the road would become a blur. The cameras that were close to the road naturally fed through the display and the audiences’ feeds. Everyone could see him. The various luxury buildings, hotels, stores, and other sites had also started to fly by on both sides of the road.
In context, the sounds of the electric motors were actually tranquil, with only the sounds of the moving tires producing an actual volume. However, Neo was aware that there were still safety regulations in some cases. People wanted to hear the motorcycles, and it was required to add a device in the engine that actually produced a unique sound. It naturally produced the mild form of euphoria that they enjoyed. Even his Bandigara bike made a satisfying harmonic noise as the vehicle gained speed. The sound would naturally let the audience stay in tune with where these motorcycles were at whether they were coming or flying on by. Even with the roads clear of people, it served as a caution tag for anybody that might slip on through the walled-up lines. Each motorcycle was unique in its sound, with Meifen’s generating a deep, almost aggravated hum to it.
Even with a long road, the vehicles would reach a faster and faster top speed. Speeds of 400 kilometers an hour were being achieved. It wouldn’t take much for this road to eventually get the next left-hand turn, and it would be a big one. Neo was aware that this track was known for its speed trap. Accidents occurred due to how the road would do an almost 180-degree turn. As a result, you had to let off the accelerator pedal or prepare to hit the brakes.
Naturally, even by now, the advanced racers of the Oshun-400 were fully aware of this mad turn that was coming up. Even aerial drones and other signs were pointing in the upcoming turn. Neo and the other racers began to slow down, but it was here that everyone had their own preference of what to do next. Some would try to go as fast as they could before making this turn and then hitting the brakes. Others would naturally let off the accelerator pedal and then do a light brake.
Neo naturally tensed up. Here was where the adrenaline would be at his max. His foot was off the accelerator pedal as he began to lightly tap on the brakes. This turn would be a hard one to achieve.
The six racers began to hit the turn almost altogether. In reality, this 180-degree turn was little more than a large turn that connected from the main road to the other one on the opposite side of the buildings. However, the fast speeds complicated this. There was enough room to compensate if one did go too fast quickly, but there was still a danger to it.
Neo’s racing bike made its most brutal turn ever. The flex tires leaned at a forty-five-degree angle. Even the pod itself would flex a little bit to the left to warn the driver of how hard this would be, but the military made good designs. Even the older Bandigara models could still handle rough nit turns with ease. As the motorcycles slowed down for this turn, the noises produced a nice descending tone that would go deeper in tone.
They had reached halfway through the hard turn. Oluchi’s smaller bike was making its turn rather well, better than the others as he slipped on ahead. This was a common sight for Neo. The old racing veteran was naturally better at the turns than everyone else.
There was a slight screeching sound with one of the DBX-600 motorcycles, the blue one, hitting the brakes slightly more. Even with the wide berth, it was dangerously close to the wall barricade. It lost its speed as it narrowly missed it but fell completely behind.
“Almost done…..almost done,” Neo said quietly as his butt cheeks were clenched. He kept a good natural balance of slowing down while making the turn. He started to see the other side of the street. He had reached the perfect speed that allowed him to maintain his current velocity while handling the hard turn.
One by one, the racing bikes had reached their turn. Oluchi’s bike was ahead, followed by Neo, then Meifen, with the last three being close behind. By now, Neo knew that they were heading straight towards the beach on the other end. However, the track was far from over. The next portion would be a series of turns. This was where the challenges of Oshun’s races resided. Neo could see that Oluchi was getting ahead as the vehicles began to form a conga line. One would follow behind the other as the next right turn was coming up. Neo’s eyes could briefly see the Leone Fountain, one of the largest water fountains in all of Oshun, that you could swim in it. Even then, the sheer size was never enough to handle the fast vehicles that quickly swept past it. It did, however, mark the right turn once you reached the edge of it. All the vehicles respected the next right ninety-degree turn as Neo jolted his small steering wheel to the right. Thankfully, this area was generally safer to ride through. This point far more muted the great velocities of the straightaway as the motorcycles hit the turns.
Upon completing the turn, Neo then hit the next turn left as another 90-degree turn came up. By now, the vehicles were slower than ever, but it was still just the beginning.
Neo often debated with what he was going to do next. Meifen was waiting as the racers completed the next turn. It would be a short trip before there would be another right turn coming up just ahead. He was so used to it by now.
“For once,” Neo said. “Don’t pass me on the first fucking lap.” His hearing would occasionally be oriented to Meifen’s motorcycle. He knew she was still doing this on purpose. Even the audience would know better. She was buying her time before the next long straightaway. Even now, the only reason she hadn’t done it yet was because of the series of turns.
The short straightaway area as Oluchi was starting to gain ground up ahead. This was the strength of his bike. It wasn’t enormously fast, but its light and sleekness made it incredible at acceleration. The sing rear tire was spinning hard as the repulsors worked overtime to keep the front section level.
In row after row of vehicles, the next right turn came up as everyone began to follow in line. The 90-degree turn was not difficult to achieve, but Neo could see that he left his right side open. On his left was the massive swimming pool of the grand hotel. The sheer size of this building made it their goal to have the biggest accommodations for everything. On the rear side of the luxury estate was one of the five largest swimming pools on the planet. Here, a large percentage of viewers could easily enjoy the racers driving by on the roads while they could swim at the same time.
Neo had his scare as Meifen’s bike drifted to the right. Her engines revved up hard as she lurched forward in the acceleration. He could see the front twin tires for a brief second before she slowed down in anticipation of the next turn. Meifen backed away and returned back to third place as the turn was coming up.
The next turn only had one direction to go as the street layout was set up. If you kept going forward, you would careen into the barricades or the buildings beyond. For a brief moment, Neo could see that there was a small opening up ahead. Oluchi was taking the turn a little bit too wide. He considered following right behind him but knew that Meifen would simply just take advantage of it. So he instead remained as he would as he was close to hitting the sidewalk in turn. Despite the advantage, Oluchi would use his acceleration rather well. When the turn was completed, he quickly sped up. All hopes to overtake him were quickly dashed. Instead, the old racer would join right up in the line as the final large series of turns would come up.
“Oshun’s slog….” Neo said as he regretted this part. The map layout showed at least six turns that were designed to lip around clusters of buildings. Each one was a 90-degree turn with a 180-degree turn on the other. It was the second to the most challenging point that pushed the turning capabilities of the bikes to their limits. Neo was ready, however, as he turned the wheel and kept a steady speed.
The motorcycles naturally shifted in their turns. They were keeping steady but careful attention to the accelerator pedal and brakes. Neo would let his instincts guide him. The entire team of racers was separating more and more, with Meifen glued to Neo’s tail. Meanwhile, Oluchi was continuing to gain more ground in the turns. After completing two turns, the motorcycle was in a small straightaway that would lead to the sizeable 180-degree turn. Much as it was earlier in the track, this turn wasn’t as bad since everyone was already moving at a slower pace. There would only be room to make a short spurt forward before there would be the heavy turn.
Much as expected, the turn was wide. Neo was pressed between the two better racers as he had no choice but to go with the flow of everything. The music being sent out was still playing in the background. The large turn caused all the bikes to naturally lean to the left in a massive wraparound. Before Neo knew it, he had to pull on the right hand of his wheel to make a 90 degree turn to the right. Finally, he would have to make the turn to the left before he was now in the last straightaway that pointed towards the beach.
“Final stretch,” he said as he had the room to slam his foot on the accelerator pedal. This area was perfect for speeding up now that the series of turns were made. This track had a good mixture of straightaways and turns, which made it a more viable balanced track. This was the third straightaway point as he could see the road lines become an instant blur. One hundred kilometers per hour……200 hundred kilometers an hour. Oluchi that was ahead of him, did have the gain on everybody, but these straight paths proved to be his weakest points.
Of course, Neo wouldn’t have much of a chance to cherish the thought. There was enough space that he knew that Meifen was about to perform her little maneuver. He tried to anticipate it as he veered to the right to block her. The front two wheels would start to shift to the right, just as she would tug hard to the left. She floored it as her engine roared to its peak. The dual twin wheels spun hard as they drove hard on the pavement. There was just enough room that Neo could see the brief outline of Meifen to his left. She jostled forward and ahead. All the racers were about to reach the final turn. Everyone began to slow down as Neo could clearly see that Meifen had passed him and was returning back into the conga line. She was now in second place, putting Neo into third. Meanwhile, everyone was reaching speeds of almost 400 kilometers per hour.
“Dammit,” Neo exclaimed with utter frustration. His vehicle slowed down more and more as the left turn was coming up. From here, he had a short but pleasant view of the beach ahead. He turned his steering wheel to the left as it gently made its turn. He couldn’t lose focus now. Maybe somehow, he could still be able to beat Oluchi and Meifen.
As the turn was complete, it would be another straightaway. This time the lap line was coming up as he accelerated forward. He pressed the accelerator pedal down as far as he could. He could hear the distant green motorcycle that still fought with him to gain third place not far behind him.
“Same shit every time!” Neo exclaimed as he sighed. He could see the grand hotel to his left. Now, the pleasant sunshine radiated from the closed canopy of the pod. His motorcycle gained speed, but he was now in a competition to beat Adrian for third place.
As the vehicles crossed the first lap, there was a cheer from the audience. Neo saw Meifen begin to pass Oluchi up ahead. His own bike, however, did at least seem to have more power than the green DBX-600.
“There will only be three for the Oshun-500,” Neo said as he could tell the races were far from over. Only the best will make it…….I will make this.”
There was a sense of harmony that could be felt in the extended portions of the tracks. Neo could understand it. Being placed in a pod and having to see the road lane indicators zip past the camera feed made him feel that he was faster than anything……even if it weren’t entirely true.
“I want to win……” he said. “I want to be remembered.”
Even with this sense of ambition, to see the two ahead of him still felt like he took a stab to the gut. He could do this better. The next turn was coming up. He could see the elapsed time that took place for the first lap on display. The number of 4 minutes and 29 seconds was nothing even close to the speed record. He was going to take this turn more traditionally. He already began to veer a little bit to the right in order to perform a wide arc. It was his hope that he could still maintain a faster speed without the need to break as much.
As he made it to the first turn of the second lap, he did his turn as Adrian tried to overtake him. It didn’t prove to be a successful move as the Bandigara struggled to maintain a faster speed than the previous lap. It was risky, however. The moment that Neo began to make his turn, the bike was veering closer and closer to the barricade. He was going too fast, and the bike’s tires were screeching to maintain their grip. The left deactivated machine gun even tipped and tapped the pavement as the pod shifted in the hard turn. It was a close call as the turn was completed, and the bike was speeding up.
For a brief moment, it was almost as if he was near the same speed as Meifen. Her motorcycle wasn’t gaining any more ground up ahead. The price of doing so, however, was dangerous. His adrenaline was in full swing as a tiny number of sparks came from the tip of the barrel before the bike leveled out in its driving. He was reminded of why he kept those guns there in the first place.
“I have to go faster,” he said to himself. A war raged in his mind as he pressed down on the accelerator pedal. The malfunction occurred again in his augmented leg. He couldn’t feel the pedal. The tingle that was there was worse than he could ever imagine.
He tapped a button as he disengaged the pedal and held down the trigger button for his steering wheel. It was a flexible switch, but he wasn’t entirely used to it as the vehicle was gaining speed.
“Damn it, damn it,” Neo said to himself. The frustration that he was having wasn’t helping him. The feeling in his leg had returned, but he knew that he couldn’t keep relying on it for the race. He wasn’t used to this form of control. His left foot would still have to be used for the brakes. He also considered the prospect of switching those controls so he could use the left trigger for the brakes.
Suddenly, he was snapped to attention. He was focused on the events with his leg and swapping the controls that he almost didn’t realize that he needed to slow down. The monstrous u-turn was coming up. Anxiety riddled his body as he had lost focus. He slammed his foot pedal on the brakes as the tires screeched a little bit. He tried to make the turn as he had seen Meifen and Oluchi were already doing the same.
It was barely enough. The bike was turning as hard as it could as it was going far faster than needed to make the turn. The building was getting closer and closer as he was reaching about 60% of the turn. He was going so fast that the barricade was coming dangerously close to it.
“No, no, no!” Neo exclaimed as he tried to make it. He was losing speed rapidly as his right side was about to careen with the wall. The right portion of the pod and machine gun mount lightly tapped it before the motorcycle almost came to a full stop.
He was only halfway through the turn as Adrian’s bike began to pass him. Adrenaline was surging in Neo’s veins. For a moment, he genuinely thought he was going to have an accident. He was trying to regain his senses as he had his finger pressed down on the trigger.
“How did I lose focus!?” Neo asked himself as he could see one of the racers get past him. “I’m better than this….”
Despite the near-collision, Neo was getting the motorcycle back up to speed as he completed the turn. He tapped his right leg in frustration at the situation. It was causing him to lose focus again.
“Why….?” He asked himself as he started to breathe harder. “Why isn’t the leg working right? Why isn’t it working right?”
He couldn’t think straight. As the motorcycle was gaining speed, he momentarily closed his eyes. Flashbacks were hitting his mind. Suddenly he was on the Tsunenaga. It was perfectly clear as he remembered seeing his leg getting severed. His scream of sheer horror blanketed his thoughts. He was doing his best as he almost lost track of the next turn again.
Neo’s heart was beating as hard as it could. Then, he started to breathe harder and harder as he would see the road, and then the event happened again and again.
