About the Author
Hello everyone, my name is CMed. I will make it brief and quick about me. I was a college student who got a Major in History before going into the realm of the military. I am a Navy Veteran that has served for six years and wanted to become an author and book writer near the end of my military contract.
Serving aboard ship was a long and challenging life. It is not for the faint-hearted, but after being taken off of it, I now had more time than ever. I used my time wisely to begin writing books. Writing had and continues to serve as therapy for me. It helped me through my times, even way before diseases or social unrest ever became the main headlines of modern media.
Writing is something that does not come overnight. Most writers require at least two years of writing before they are even going to be marketing. Needless to say, make sure that you set the time to do so if you wish to be a part of that hobby. If you know somebody that wishes to become an author, make sure to give them that support. Writing is an extension of us and our imagination. Without imagination, our civilizations would never exist. Without imagination, we would have no empathy towards the next person. We all come from different walks of life. Each one of us can tell a story, and it all comes down to our will to survive through the best of times to the worst of times.
I have designed Tales of Heroes and Gabatrix to be a system that expands itself. If people like my stories, then they can help out that cause. With the help of you, the audience, the system will get bigger and bigger. If you like my stories, then come and support me on my Patreon. Thank you, and enjoy my stories. :)

Prologue
What if we live in a world that the deities exist?
What if we live in a world where myths were real?
What if we live in a world knowing that the folklores were true?
What if we live in a world in that the fairy tales were real?
What if we live in a world where history and myth intersect?
What do you believe?…..
Chapter 1: September 7th, 1978
It was the beginning of the afternoon in the suburbs of Mira Mesa, California, several miles from San Diego. It was a partly cloudy day as Gary slapped the heavy box down in his new bedroom. The older child felt tired and exhausted. He moved the box a little bit as he heard the shifting sounds of toys in the box.
"Gary!" his mother called out to him. "Did you get all the boxes from the van?"
"I did, mom!" he replied. He breathed hard as the child was doing his best to catch his breath.
"Good! Come down and get dinner. I made your favorite; Catfish, Kale, and Marconi and Cheese."
Gary's eyes lit up as he heard his mother's words. He couldn't hold his excitement from the near exhaustion. His room was filled with unopened boxes after moving everything from the moving van.
"I will be right down, mom!" he said as he stepped out of his room. He looked down the hallway that led to the bathroom. He walked down the hall as he needed to use the toilet. After relieving himself and flushing the toilet, he walked up the mirror and began washing his hands.
The reflection of the mirror depicted a child of 12. He wore his favorite blue and green colored t-shirt that had Kirk and the starship Enterprise on it along with his simple blue jean shorts. His facial features depicted a child that was born from a family of mixed heritages while still carrying a light skin complexion along with short black hair. He finished up, scrubbed his hands as he wiped his hands dry, and left the room.
The house was not exactly big. With it being a two-bedroom home, there was his room, his mother's room, the restroom, and the kitchen and living room. There wasn't much else to it, but it was a cozy place to be at least. Gary walked out of the restroom and proceeded through the small hallway that led to the kitchen. He could already smell his favorite meal as the aroma perforated the area. He felt drawn to it as he reached the kitchen.
His mother sat down at the kitchen table. She already had the meal ready for him as he smiled and walked to sit down beside her on the table. The dinner plate looked appetizing, along with the silverware already prepared for him to dive in to eat.
Gary's mother seemed distracted as she always was. She had one hand holding her fork, while her other held an open newspaper. She was busy reading what was on the news, along with any additional relevant information she could find.
"Gary have a seat," she said. "We have everything inside now after the move. I want us to relax in our new home. You earned it."
"Thank you, mom," he told her.
His mother looked like a typical working single mother of her time. She had a pale complexion and wore a simple shirt and dress. Her hair was long and partially curvy as it flowed from her head to her shoulders. She sighed a little bit as she put down her newspaper. She needed to concentrate on her son and eating. She then picked up her other silverware as they began to eat.
"Are you ready for school tomorrow?" she asked him as she used her knife to start cutting into the fish she cooked.
Gary frowned a little bit. He almost didn't even want to answer her question. "I……don't know, mom."
"Hey…..," she tried to console him. Her voice was soothing to him as she could see her son was nervous. "I understand how you feel about coming to a place with new people. I know that things have not been easy since the move. Ever since my job being moved here and your father passing away,……things have not been easy for both of us."
"I miss dad," Gary said, almost quietly to her. It was enough for her to hear.
"I know, baby," she said. She reached her hand across the table and touched his hand.      This hasn't been easy for us, but I know that we will get through together. Your father left an impact on us. The life insurance he left behind ensured we could get this house to ourselves relatively easy. I don't plan on moving anytime again soon, and hopefully, we will never have to again. This is the opportunity for you and me to get to know the people around this neighborhood. It is an opportunity to learn about the city. School will be good for you tomorrow. I promise you that you will have many friends."
Gary seemed partially convinced. His mother released his hand as she went and started eating as he went and started cutting up his fish and used his fork to take his first bite of the meal. It was delicious as she always made it.
"Pretty good?" she asked him.
"Yes, it is, mom."
"That is good. I was worried about the fish. It was just a little bit old, but it is still good."
They ate for a little while when his mother spoke up again.
"You know I…..I am thinking of getting a VHS," his mother spoke to him. "It's been a good year since it's been out, I figure that we go ahead and get one for ourselves now don't we."
"VHS?" Gary asked.
"Videotape cassette player. My friend ending getting one and they are so nice. We wouldn't have to go to the movie theater all the time to see movies. You would be able to see one here at home."
Gary's eyes wandered as he thought about it. "You mean…..we would be able to see Star Wars?"
His mother took her fork and pointed it to him. "That will be the first movie that I will get for it."
The kid smiled as he thought about it some more. "I would love to!" he exclaimed.
"I figure it would be staying with the times. Especially with seeing where our technology is going to."
"I will finally get a chance to see it again!"
"I knew that would get you happy. You just make sure that you get yourself to school and make some friends, alright."
"I will, mom."
They would continue eating for a little while until they finally finished up. Gary looked outside and could see the sun getting lower and lower. In another hour, the sun would set. The kid patted his stomach a little bit, feeling full. His mother saw how he reacted.
"Pretty good, wasn't it?" she asked him.
"It was."
"And what do we say after we get done eating?"
"Thank you for the meal," he replied with a smile.
"Good, good. I will go ahead and start cleaning things up. Oh!" she said, remembering something. "Gary, can you go get the mail while I get started with washing the dishes. After that, I need you to help your mom get these dishes dry."
"Alright, mom," he responded as he got up and walked out of the kitchen. He heard the sounds of plates being picked up as he reached the living room. The living room was small but enough to hold a couch and a couple of chairs along with a Panasonic 1975 Television set. There were still boxes partially open strewn about in the living room. The place was being moved into, and the area showed constant signs of it.
Gary put on his flip flops as he reached the front door and opened it. It was still bright enough outside as he stepped out and closed the door behind him.
The front door simply led to the cement pathway that led to the front lawn and main road that connected to the various houses throughout the neighborhood. As Gary walked on the cement walkway, he looked to his left to see his mother's red 1975 Cadillac Sedan parked in the driveway.  The vehicle was new and in good condition so far. He continued his walk to see the mailbox's flag was down, indicating that the mail lady had left mail for him to pick up.
Gary had a chance to look at the road by the front lawn of his house. There weren't many trees around him except for two trees in his backward. The front yard had a little bit of green grass. The house he had was nothing big but was adequate for his childhood, assuming his mother would stop moving. The house was painted a light green. It had a window that connected to his bedroom that oversaw the front lawn. The window by the front door connected to the living room. The roof was in moderate condition with one of the shingles that were cracked. Some houses were the same size except for the large house on the other side of his.
The boy went and popped open the mailbox. He reached his hand into it and pulled out one envelope. He went and closed up the mailbox when he heard a commotion behind him.
He turned around to find himself gazing at a girl on the other side of the road from the large house. She appeared to be about around his age and was seemingly pretty and adorable looking. She had Asian like features on her face. She wore a small pink and white kimono, something that didn't seem to be commonplace in the neighborhood. She was watching him intently like she was noting everything about him.
Almost at the same time, they lifted their hands to wave to each other. It surprised the girl so much that she giggled a little bit. Gary was surprised by this girl. She had black raven hair, almost like what he had. It was long and flowing, in which she did not have it tied down in a bun. The distance between them prevented Gary from gaining any further knowledge from her as she heard a voice come from inside her home, which made her turn her head to it. She smiled again to Gary and then ran back into her house. The last thing he saw was a woman that put her hand to the girl's shoulder that was most likely one of her parents.
Gary snapped out of it as he looked at the home. It was similar in size to his but had a new floor to it. The house had a garage in it, and it seemed way better maintained and lavish than his home. With the mail firmly in his hand, he turned back to his house and ran back inside. The girl or, in this case, his neighbor would have to wait till later.
Upon opening up the door to his home, he could see his mom in the kitchen washing dishes. He entered back into his house and closed the door.
"Remember to lock the door!" his mom called out. "And would you be kind to turn on the TV before you come and wash the dishes? I want to hear about the news as we clean."
"Alright, mom."
Gary did as he was told. He flipped the lock of the doorknob, locking the front door. He then and walked up to the knob and turned it. The TV screen displayed static momentarily before it turned into a hazy, undefined show. He then flipped the knob again before it tuned in on the news channel.
He only looked at the TV for a few seconds. He only saw the appearance of a man behind a desk with a picture of something that he was talking about as Gary left the living room and walked into the kitchen. His mother was busy washing a plate from the sink as she handed the wet dish to her son. Gary went and took the mail and put it on the table as he picked up a towel from a rack and proceeded to start drying the dishes she was cleaning. They heard the voice on the TV speak as the anchorman spoke away.
"The Whitehouse has made no further comment on the Soviet Nuclear Testing that has been taking place," there was a pause in the man's voice as they could hear shuffling of papers. Gary went and started putting the dry dishes in the cabinet. The noise of running water from the faucet almost drowned out the sound from the TV.
"In other news today, the President has been making negative results so far during the Peace conference at Camp David. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin have gathered with President Carter to discuss peace between Egypt and Israel. During the last several years of continuous war and uneasy peace, the President has been making it his primary goal to establish a new lasting peace between the two nations. Issues regarding the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have left both sides angry at one another. According to the Whitehouse conference, President Carter will not leave until both sides agree with one another……." There was a pause as the anchorman was moving paper for his notes.
Gary's mother was busy washing a pot as her son continued to dry everything that she was cleaning.
"In sport's news today it appears the Yankees had beaten the Red Sox today in Boston. The news has been a shock for many Baseball fans as the Red Sox had a 111 win streak and were expected to win today against the New York Yankees. The Yankees managed to give the surprise to the Red Sox by winning with a final score of 15-3. Many are wondering if the Yankees will take Boston in the next series of games in the next couple of days. We have more news today after we have a word from our sponsor."
They began to hear the sounds of commercials as Gary, and his mother spoke to each other.
"The one thing that I pray for son is that you will never have to worry about the world wiping itself out," the mother said as she slowed down on her dishwashing.
"Why would we try to hurt each other, mom?" Gary asked.
"….I wish I had an answer. We believe we should be ready against the Communists, and the Communists want to be ready against us. In the end, all we are doing is trying to ensure our destruction."
Gary sighed as he dried the pot his mother washed.
"But," his mother put her wet hand on his shoulder. "We have made it so far for almost thirty years now. I just hope that after Vietnam for us that we survive until Communism comes to an end."
"I wish the Communists would lose."
"No, son. Don't try to think that way. It is best to wish that in the end. The Soviets would find a better system for their ideas instead of what they have now. If they lose, then everything they have that can be used to kill us will instead go to someone else that will want to hurt us. It probably at this rate will eventually happen," the mother tried to pause, but her mind was still thinking about everything. "Go ahead and turn off the TV. I feel that I have heard enough. Any more, and it would just make me upset."
Gary quietly with a plate and towel in hand, walked up to the TV and turned it off. The screen went black again as they walked back into the kitchen. This left them back to their thoughts.
"I saw a girl next door," Gary told his mother.
"You did? You got a chance to see our next-door neighbor. I will have to get some time set up to meet our neighbors."
"The girl was wearing a kimono of some sort."
"Hmmm…..sounds like the family might be from Japan possibly, but I shouldn't be too quick to judge. That was what your father did when I first called him Japanese by accident. He was upset at first, but after he corrected me, he vowed to make sure that I know who he was."
"And that was how you got married."
"Yep……" she paused. "He made sure I learned everything about him, and then he learned everything about me. It became a game for us…..then we got so smart that we decided the best way to handle the future was to stay together to the end. I was happy I told him yes when he asked me to marry him……I just wish he was still alive."
Gary went and hugged his mother's waist. He felt the warmth of her body as he tried to resist crying.
"You have done everything you could today. Thank you for helping me out, son."
"You're welcome," he replied happily to her.
"Go ahead and try to unpack as much as possible tonight. Tomorrow will be a busy day at school, and I have to resume my work at this new building here in town. I already miss San Francisco."
"Ok, mom, I will go to my room."
His mother went and gripped his son's shoulder for a short bit as if she felt the need to touch him. He looked up at her before he touched her hand. He left the kitchen to walk back to his room.
The sounds of the last of the dishes being put away were the only echoing sound in the house. Gary almost tripped on a set of closed boxes as he made his way to his room. It was getting darker and darker as time progressed. The day was slowly inching its way to the setting sun. The older child made his way to his room and closed the door behind him.
Gary kept to himself as he looked at the mostly empty room. The move to the new home was a continuous process. At least the child could rest more easily that things were all appropriately situated. He had a blanket and a bed in the empty room at the moment. There was a small desk near the corner of the window that led to the front lawn.
He walked to one of his boxes as he opened one. He looked in it and saw an array of posters that he wanted to pin to his wall. In the box were all the pushpins he needed to put up on his wall. He pulled out the rolled out poster that depicted Bruce Lee shirtless and in a fighting stance as he put it up on the wall. He went back to his box and then pulled out the next rolled-up poster. He unrolled it to reveal a picture that depicted the Doctor from Doctor Who and placed it on the wall. The pushpins slipped into the wood of the walls with ease. Each poster he placed up showed something that he enjoyed obviously during his childhood.
He then walked to his box and pulled out a few trinkets and souvenirs that he was going to place on his desk.
"Dad……," he said as he pulled out a frame and picture on it. He sighed as he tried to avoid crying. On it was a picture of him, his mother, and his father in Chinatown together. The image seemed to be a few years old, as Gary could tell he was getting older and older. There was a long pause as the child looked at the picture. He was thinking of all the great things they did together. He lifted the stand of the frame and placed it on the table.
"I love you, dad…..I miss you."
Gary tried to snap out of it as he went back to his boxes and continued to pull things out left and right. Toys and various gadgets were strewn about on the floor. These toys were something that he had when he was very young. He took his clothing and put them into a near cabinet. It was the only cabinet inside the room, and it would be another day before the rest of the furniture would be brought in. The rest of the items would have to wait before being stored until extra furniture would come in. He already had a selection of clothes that he had ready for the next day pulled out. He hung some of the clothes in the closet, but the ones he would wear tomorrow morning, he had them folded and placed on the desk. It would be simple and easy for him to grab his clothes, get dressed, and get on the bus to go to school.
When he placed the clothes on the desk, his eyes went to his window. It was closed, and the shudders were partially open to allow him to see outside. The darkening sky was making it harder and harder to see the front lawn. The street lights were close to turning on to provide illumination to the street.
Gary's eyes began to scan the front lawn. His thoughts immediately went to the big home next to him. He then remembered the girl he saw just recently. He could see what looked like some sort of activity going on from his neighbor's house. There were two lights on that he could see coming from the windows. One of the rooms that were lit came from the top floor of the home with another one he could see near the front entrance.
His eyes watched the window on the top floor of the home. Curtains were in the way to prevent him from seeing the inside. He could swear that he saw a silhouette of that girl that might have been dancing or playing around in her room. It was too far to make a clear understanding of it, though, to make any further understanding of what he was seeing. The moment of curiosity of the girl next door would have to wait, though. He went and closed the shudders entirely as he went back to work.
Chapter 2: September 8th, 1978
The school bus came to a halt as it pulled up on the street next to Gary’s home. He wore blue jeans, a buttoned red shirt, and old sneakers that barely fit him along with a small backpack with his lunch and essential school gear. He watched the door of the bus open as the sound of the brakes engaged, making its classical auditory squeak that filled the surrounding environment.
The bus driver, a quiet older man with a smirk on his face, looked at the child as he took note of him.
“You are the new one,” the driver told him. “Have a seat where you want….ehm….what’s your name again?”
“Gary Lee,” the child replied.
“Right. Go and have a seat, and don’t be causing any trouble on my bus now you hear me?”
“I understand.”
Gary’s eyes looked at the bus. There were a couple of students that filled the interior of the bus. Boys and Girls lined the rows of seats. Everyone looked like a stranger, and most of the eyes befell him. He knew this was the beginning of the day, and getting a chance to meet everyone was set with both wonder and possibly danger.
He noticed that most of the students had a pale complexion compared to his. While his skin color was barely different, his facial features were. He was being born from a man that was Chinese. It didn’t seem to bother the students, though, as most of the kids simply looked at their friends. They appeared more distracted with each other rather than giving a damn about the new kid. That was a good sign, at least. If they didn’t have a problem, then all he had to do was reach out, and they would want to make friends.
As he was about to have a seat, he could see a little girl run out of the neighbor’s house next door. Gary found an empty seat as he plopped his butt down onto the hard vinyl cushioned furniture. He could see the bus driver was just about to disengage the brake but saw a running girl. The girl seeing the bus was not going anywhere slowed down her run. Gary could take note of what he saw.
He noticed that it was the same girl from the previous day. She was not wearing that kimono as she did before, but a pink and white long dress that covered her body. She had a backpack that she wore on her shoulders. Her hair danced in the wind as she reached the bus quickly. Gary could notice from the front door of the home, a woman in her thirties that was in a kimono that she wore. Perhaps she was the mother of the girl?
The girl reached the steps of the bus as she walked inside. The bus driver gave her a scornful look.
“I almost left you behind! Next time I will leave you behind,” the driver said.
“I am sorry. Thank you for waiting for me.”
The bus driver shoed her away as the girl looked at the interior of the bus. She wondered down the aisle to find a seat. She went and sat in front of Gary, almost ignoring him.
Gary was tempted to go and ask the girl about her. He was rudely interrupted by a plop next to his seat. A kid that was larger than he was, went and moved from his previous seat to his.
The kid was not only bigger than him but might have been an eighth-grader. He had a jock shirt and pants. He might have been a football player of some sort.
“Hello, new kid. You just moved in?” the young teen asked.
Gary’s eyes went to the kid that sat next to him as the bus began to take off. The other kids took no notice of the new kid. He was bigger than him, and he had a blonde buzz cut on his forehead. He had a pale complexion to him. Gary felt a slight bit nervous with the teen, but he kept calm as he looked at him.
“Yes. I just moved in a couple of days ago,” Gary replied to him.
The older kid looked at him and smiled. “My name is Jacob. What is yours?”
“Gary…..Gary Lee,” he replied to him.
“Heh…..you have a last name that is Chinese, and you look……like you are Asian.”
“No, I was born here. My father was Chinese. My mom was born here.”
“I see, I see,” the teen replied to him. “I was born in Nevada and moved to California five years ago.”
Gary noticed that the girl’s head turned a little bit from behind the seat. He wanted to focus on her, but this Jacob was persistent. He decided to appease the teen for just this once. “Nice to meet you, Jacob.”
“Good,” Jacob replied. They could hear a snicker come from behind them. On the seat adjacent next to them were other jocks wearing the same clothing that Jacob wore. Jacob turned his head and gave them an angry look. “Do you have a problem!?”
“No,” the other jocks said. They seemed to laugh and snicker at him.
“Good,” Jacob replied again. Gary was noticing the snickering too, but it seemed this Jacob was asserting his control over them. He calmed down a little bit as he saw the teen talk to him. “Now…..where were we. So Gary…..how long have you lived here in California?”
“I come from San Francisco. I lived there since I was born.”
“Hmmm…..I see. So Gary, do you like football?” Jacob asked.
“A little bit….I read books, though more than anything.”
“Do you still play sports?”
“If I have to.”
“Hey, Jacob!” one of the teens from across the aisle called to him again. “You have to come check this out!”
“Ugh…..fine,” the teen replied. He got up and walked to the seat across and next to him. Gary could notice that the jocks were all sitting together and sharing what looked like a magazine with women on it. The women seemed to be scantily dressed as Gary focused straight ahead of him again.
The bus was making a few stops along the trip. Gary would feel the bus go forward and stop along the way. Children were all talking with each other and ignored him, all except one…..
Gary was looking out the window when he noticed the girl. She was in front of him, looking at him through the reflection in the window. It took him by surprise as he didn’t know that he was being watched the whole time.
The little girl put her two fingers next to her chin as she was smiling at him. Gary responded to the girl by waving to her through the reflection. She was waiting for him to look at her, and he finally did. She turned her head around and looked at him. Her same cute and adorable smile she had was hypnotic to him.
The girl seemed to know what she was doing. She quickly got out of her seat and practically plopped to his position next to him.
Both the kids were almost waiting for the other to say something. Finally, the girl was the first to say something to him.
“Hello,” her voice said to him. Her voice had an accent to it, but Gary did not recognize it yet.
“Hello, my name is……”
“Gary Lee,” she interrupted him before he answered it thoroughly. “My name is Fumi Yuki.”
“Oh……I recognize that accent now. You are Japanese?”
The girl nodded her head to him. She was his height and size as Gary quickly looked at her appearance. She was cute, that was for sure.
“So I guess you know where I come from, right? I mean, you must have heard what I told Jacob, right?”
“Yes. You come from San Francisco. Why did you move here? This place is not as big as that city.”
“Oh, that. Umm….some of it is personal……some of it though has to deal with my mom. She had to move here because of her job. Our home is not far from her workplace.”
“Do you know how long you will live here in Mira Mesa?”
“I don’t know. My mom does not want to move away from here if she can. She wants me to grow up here in this neighborhood if she had that power.”
“Ok,” the girl replied. She smiled as she looked at him.
“Heh….” Gary smiled back. “I saw you were wearing that……kimono yesterday.”
“You liked that?”
“Yes, you seemed pretty in it. It made you stand out so much when I saw you.”
“My mother ordered them. I will let her know that you liked it.”
“So tell me about yourself, Fumi. Where do you come from?”
Fumi brushed her long hair away from her ear. “I was born here. I was born near Los Angeles before moving here with my mother.”
“Just your mom? What happened to your father?”
“He……” she tried to reply to him. “He……”
Gary could see she was struggling to say it. Instead, he decided to fill the words for her. “I am sorry. I lost my dad two months ago.”
Fumi looked down a little bit. “Yeah…..it’s alright. I…..never met my dad.”
“Oh…..I am so sorry,” he shrugged. “At least we have something in common.”
“Yes,” Fumi nodded. “What is your mom’s name?”
“Stephanie. What about your mom?”
“My mom’s name is Eshima.”
Gary nodded his head. “How do you have such a strong accent for somebody that was born here?”
“Well…..I grew up in a Japanese neighborhood here in Los Angeles.”
“Hmmm, interesting. I guess that makes sense. I wouldn’t be surprised people would think I was Chinese even though my mother was born here.”
“My mom was born in Japan. She moved here before I was ever born.”
The bus began to pull up to his middle school. Gary briefly could see the name of his school.  The name Wangenheim Middle School was displayed on the billboard.
“I guess we will have to continue our talk later,” Gary told her.
Fumi looked bummed for a second. “Alright.”
There was a pause as Gary very briefly noticed that Fumi was looking at him thoroughly. She was checking his body before she turned her eyes away from him towards the bus parking ramp. One by one, the busses were all pulling in and unloading their students to the school. Staff and attendees were all there, guiding the students that we're walking into the campus. There was a brief moment as he looked over to Fumi. He wanted to spend more time talking to her. She seemed nice. Too bad school was there to get in the way.
As the bus pulled in, Gary was about to get out of his seat. He looked over to Fumi that was already standing up. They looked at each other again and then proceeded with the other students as the bus pulled to a stop and began to unload the students onboard.
*******
The school was relatively small for the large town. It consisted of a couple of large buildings, and that was it. It was just after lunch, and Gary was getting through class after class being introduced to everyone, learning the courses, meeting the teacher, and adjusting to the new school. However, he had one class left, and that was the hardest one that he had to get through in his life in school…..math.
Gary walked into the classroom with a folder, pen, and paper as he heard the bell ring to indicate the changing class period was over. He reached the classroom to see a room filled with over twenty students.
“Ah…….yes, I received the notification that I would get a new student today,” a friendly female teacher called out to him as he entered the room. “Gary Lee, right?”
“Yes, ma'am,” he replied as the students were getting comfortable in their seats.
“My name is Mrs. Cassada. Welcome to my classroom. Go and have a seat by the rear window there. We are getting through basic review before we start to delve deeper into math. You came at the right time when school got started, so you haven’t missed too much.”
She went and opened up her desk. She pulled out a spare math textbook to give to him. Gary received it with open arms.
Gary saw the class in front of him. All the students’ faces were looking at them. He had recognized a few of the students from some of the other classes throughout the day. This class was different, though. He identified two students that he had seen in the morning, though, and that was on the bus. One was Jacob, the big jock that was sitting on the other side of the classroom from his seat. He was busy trying to look at his math book. The other student that Gary recognized was Fumi. She was not far from his seat.
For a fleeting moment, Gary smiled a little bit when he saw Fumi. She was a happy sight to behold for him, even though he had only seen her a few times so far. The little girl saw him, and she even lightly smacked her desk with happiness at seeing him.
Gary went and had a seat at his desk. He had a good position in the room. He was near the back and away from any students that seemed threatening to him. Fumi sat two seats ahead of him, but at least he could see her.
“Alright, everyone,” Mrs. Cassada said. “Today, we will be reviewing Chapter 2, Section 3, in our general review section. From yesterday's class, who can tell me what is 14 times 28?”
A few students went and started to write it down on their scrap sheets of paper. They started doing the math. Gary went and pulled out a sheet of paper from his folder. He already had his pencil ready, and even if he didn’t have the answer, it was a wakeup call to him to try his best with getting started.
Fumi wrote a few things on her paper, but she raised her hand in which the teacher called her name.
“392 ma’am,” Fumi answered.
“Very good,” the math teacher replied with a look of content. “Now,” she said, looking at the rest of the classroom. “Who can tell me what is 392 divided by 16?”
Gary watched his paper closely as he started going through the process of writing down the numbers and doing the process of breaking down the math problem so he could solve it. He momentarily looked at the classroom. He saw many pencils at work as the students were trying to solve the problem on the board. He was struggling, and he knew the students would have the answer before him.
“Yes, Joseph,” the teacher called out the student in the front seat.
“24.5,” he replied.
“Correct. Thank you, Joseph,” she told him.
Joseph put his pencil down as Gary stopped and put his hand to his head.
The teacher went and put her hands together. “That was just the warm-up for today's classroom. We will be going through the end of the chapter review and get started with your homework. After we finish up with that, in twenty minutes, we will go and review your work. I will be walking around, so feel free to ask me if there is anything that you don’t understand. I want you to turn to pages 45 to 46 and do problems one through fifteen. Change that…….” She said as she was flipping through the pages of her math book. “Don’t worry about problem number 4. We have not had a chance to go through it thoroughly. Skip that one. If you wish, you may partner up with someone so that you can help one another out.”
With that, the classroom got started with their work. All the students began eyeing each other. Some were already getting out of their seats to try to sit close to somebody that they already knew. Fumi turned her head to look at Gary, and his eyes naturally went to her. He was just about to get out of his seat when a limbering kid walked next to him.
The student that walked up to him was Jacob. He went and grabbed the one empty seat and sat close to Gary. Gary was almost annoyed at seeing the big kid come to him as he was about to go towards Fumi. The little girl simply looked at Jacob and shook her head as she went back and looked at her paper once again.
“Hey,….looks like I got help,” Jacob told him. “Mind if we tackle problems one through three?”
Gary was bummed out a little bit but looked at the kid and answered his question.  “Sure….”
Gary watched Jacob as he took his notebook and pulled out his pencil. It had chewed marks on the wood as if he had some lousy habit as he started writing on his paper.
“Hey, what’s the answer to number two?” Jacob asked him.
“Thirty…..I think.”
That seemed satisfactory to Jacob as he wrote down the answer to his paper.
“Do you know the answer to number one?” Jacob asked.
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?” he looked at him with a fierce intensity.
“I mean, I don’t know. I am no computer, alright?”
“Hmmm……” the jock replied. “I thought you were smart.”
“Not at math, unfortunately. I am sorry.”
“Well, I will tell you what. I think you are smarter than you are telling me. I need somebody that is smart and can help me take care of my homework. Think you can handle that?”
“Umm…..” Gary thought about it. “I am trying to do what I can here. I don’t think that I can do much on that.”
Jacob seemed to look at him hard. “How about I pay you to go do my homework?”
Gary thought about it as he looked at him. “I don’t know about that. My skills and knowledge are…..”
“Whatever…..” Jacob told him. He seemed like he was dejected a little bit as he stood up and walked away to his desk.
Gary shook his head as he tried to refocus on his work.
Before he got much further, he noticed that Fumi was looking at him. She got out of her seat as she got beside him. She had a folder and pencil ready in her possession.
“I thought he would never leave,” Fumi quietly told him.
“Yeah…..I barely know anyone. I am not good at math as it is.”
He watched as Fumi not only listened but took a desk and moved it close to him. He felt a sense of comfort being close to her. The desk was perfectly perpendicular to his. She sat down next to him as she opened her math book and looked at him.
“I am good at math. I know how to multiply well,” Fumi told Gary.
“Good, this is a little bit too much for me.”
“With me, you won’t have to worry that much. Let’s get started with question number 1.”
Gary read the first problem. “What is eighty-eight divided by six?”
Fumi closed her eyes as she thought about it for a short bit. She then opened up her eyes and answered it. “Fourteen and two thirds.”
“Wow, you did that without having to write it down,” as he started writing it down on his paper. “That sounds close enough.”
“Thank you,” she told him.
“For what?”
“For recognizing that and complimenting me. Most just take the answers that I give and say nothing more about it. It’s why I generally work alone.”
“I see….” Gary replied to her. “Well, let’s keep working.”
“Problem number two. What is 102 divided by eleven?”
“Ugh…..” Gary said as he tried to figure it out.
“Don’t try to do it just with your head. Write it down, Gary,” Fumi pointed her pencil at him.
Gary wrote the problem down on his paper. He saw Fumi’s hand go to his.
“Now,” she said. “You remember your math from the past grades?”
He looked at her as he felt the warmth of her hand. It took him by surprise seeing a girl do this. He tried to keep himself composed. “I…..I do but, it’s like the hardest thing for me. My father always had to work with me when it came to math. With him gone, I lost the tutor that helped me get through.”
“It’s ok, let me help you,” she told him. “Look at number ten, not the two. Can you divide ten by eleven?”
Gary shook his head. “No.”
She released her hand from his. “Then, you must write a zero for that second digit.”
He did what she told him.
“Now, how many times does eleven go into 102?”
“Nine times……”
“There is more. What is nine times eleven make?”
“Ninety-nine.”
“What is 102 minus ninety-nine make?” she asked him.
“Three.”
“Can eleven go into three?”
“No.”
“Now add a zero to it. Can you divide thirty by eleven?”
Gary nodded his head. “Ah, now, I remember.”
“It is alright. There is nothing wrong with having a hard time with math. Some are naturally good, and others have a natural hard time with it.”
Gary and Fumi would finish up the answer by writing down the answer to be nine point two seven.
“Second problem down,” Gary told her.
Fumi turned her paper over as she wrote something. She then handed the paper to Gary to read. He read it very quietly to ensure no one could.
“I like you, Gary. Do you like me?”
He looked at her and smiled. It took him a little bit by surprise, but it seemed so quick. He had just seen her yesterday. There was a charm to her though that took him by surprise. Never did he imagine his neighbor that he just met had a girl crush on him. He had to reply to her. He wrote back the words to her. It was one simple word, and he pushed the paper back to her. She smiled as she flipped the paper over and resumed the work.
“Number three,” Fumi said out loud. “Fifty-five times twelve?”
Gary tried to think about it.
“Don’t try to solve it in your head, silly,” she told him. “Write it down.”
He did as she told him. He felt a little bit giddy as he thought about her, and at the same time, trying to focus on his work was proving to be challenging. It was as if nothing else in the classroom mattered. The teacher skimmed past the two and could see that Fumi was tutoring him. She let them be.
Gary simply watched as Fumi took his paper and started doing the problem in front of him. She quietly guided him on the problem.
“So, the answer is 660?”
“Yes,” she replied. She flipped her paper around and began to write a series of new words for him to read. She slipped the paper to him.
Gary flipped the paper around and read it quietly as he did before. He felt his heart flutter a little bit.
“Tomorrow is Friday. I want you to come over to my house. Will your mom be against it?”
Gary wrote down the answer. He wrote the words that said, “No, she won’t mind. She wants me to meet new people.” He slipped the paper for her to read it. As she flipped it, she smiled at what she saw. She then flipped the paper and continued with the problems.
He could no longer keep his head entirely straight. The thought of meeting a girl, a beautiful girl that lived next to him that had some feelings towards him; it was something that made him happy to hear. It was the best news he would ever have for the day. But he had to keep himself together as he had a day to finish up.
*******
It was after school when Gary was getting on the bus. He was one of the first to get on the bus as he waited for the other students to get on board to be taken back home. His thoughts ran with the idea of everything that happened in the day. The teachers seemed competent, at least. His thoughts then went to Fumi as he knew she would be coming back.
He saw a couple of students come trickling into the bus. He didn’t pay any close attention to them coming in as he sat comfortably in his seat.
“Fumi……” he said quietly thinking of her. She was already starting to run through his mind. This neighbor that was next door to him, she was so pretty and kind to him. A part of him felt that it had to be a trick of some sort. It just seemed too good to be true that a girl would show such interest to him.
His thoughts were interrupted when the big kid showed up and sat beside him. His head turned to see the face of the jock. It was Jacob that was looking down at him.
Gary felt a little bit of annoyance at seeing him. He wanted the seat to be free for Fumi to sit next to him.
“What is it, Jacob?” he asked him.
“Still interested in helping me out with my homework?” Jacob asked him.
Gary was ready to tell him to go away, but he tried to be polite to him. “I am not interested. Besides Jacob, I wouldn’t be that much help…..”
“I will give you ten bucks to do my homework.”
Gary simply replied with no from his head. “I am sorry.”
There seemed to be a little bit of anger from his face. “Ha…..fine.” His hand went to Gary’s arm as he felt Jacob press his fingers to press and then pinch his skin hard to elicit a response from the short kid.
“Listen……” Jacob seemed more direct with his conversation. “How about I raise the money a little bit? How about I give you thirty dollars to do my homework?”
“Ummm……no, Jacob. I am sorry. You won’t be able to get much from me. I had poor grades in math.”
Jacob simply gave him an angry look at him. “How about I get that girlfriend of yours to do it for me?”
This grabbed Gary’s attention. The way that Jacob used those words was in a threatening tone. It almost made it sound like it an attempt to hurt her in some way. His mind was fully active as he thought about it.
“Yeah, I thought that would have worked,” Jacob said. “I know her a little bit. She is weak and pathetic. She is smart, though, that is for sure. I wouldn’t mind having her helping me out. Maybe she should be my girlfriend?”
Gary remained quiet and refused to answer.
“Tomorrow……at recess, come around the school building to the benches. If you do a good job with my homework, maybe I will pay you. Don’t come and…….”
“Fine…….” Gary replied to him, unsure how to answer his question any further.
Jacob smiled. He got out of the seat and walked to the back of the bus to have a seat. This left Gary shaking his head at the thought. On the one hand, he made an enemy, and on the other hand, he thought of Fumi.
About a minute later, Fumi stepped in the bus with her book bag on her shoulders. She stepped on board and eyed Gary immediately. She homed in like a missile, where she plopped herself down in the seat next to him.
“Hi…..,” she said with a smile.
Gary simply smiled at her, but he said nothing else.
“Are you alright?”
“No……don’t worry about it.”
The bus driver came into the bus as the last student entered as well. The driver had a seat as he fastened his seatbelt and started up the engine.
Fumi gave a confused look. “It is for me to worry about Gary. What is wrong?”
Gary went to a whisper to her. “Jacob is trying to threaten me to do his schoolwork.”
“Ah….” She whispered back to him. “He does that. He tries to have everyone do his work because he is lazy. He tries to hurt others.”
The bus driver disengaged the parking brake as he drove the bus away from the bus ramp. They were once again on the road heading back to their homes.
“He wants me to go a spot during recess. I think he is making a threat to me.”
“He will not succeed.”
“He is much stronger than me if he tries to hurt me.”
“He will not succeed,” she told him again. “I promise you.”
Gary felt her hand go to his. It made him giddy again.
The other students on the bus were all either asleep, talking to other students, or only just waiting for the bus to take them to their bus stop.
“Do you think I am pretty?” Fumi asked him.
Gary nodded to her.
“I think you are handsome.”
He blushed a little bit. “Thank…..you.”
Fumi released her hand from his. She went and set her backpack down on the floor as she unzipped the bag. She looked like she was trying to find something.
“What are you doing?” Gary asked.
“Trying to find something…..do you like to read?”
“Yes.”
“Do you play sports?”
“I do, but I read more than play in with others.”
Fumi pulled it out of her bag. It was a book that was titled Fairy Tales.
“I like reading a lot too. Of course, I enjoy many things too.”
Gary sat peacefully as the bus continued traveling down the streets. It would make regular stops, letting off students to their homes. Slowly the bus would get more and more empty in the passing minutes. Jacob stepped off the bus and left along with his two other friends.
“What stories do you like to read?” Gary asked her.
“I like to read fairy tale stories. I like stories about the gods and the different religions. What about you?”
He shrugged. “I usually read whatever comes to me. I like to read science fiction stories, mostly.”
“What about Japanese Fairy Tale stories?”
“It….is specific, but I guess it is alright to hear some.”
Fumi smiled. “I have many stories that I like. I like the story of Wind and the Willows. I like the story of Reynard the Fox. When it comes to Japanese tales, I like the story of Kuzunoha.”
“What story is that about?” Gary asked with curiosity.
“It is a story of a man that stops a hunter from killing a fox. A woman comes later on to see the man that stopped the hunter. The two fall in love and have a family. It is a little bit sad, though…..”
“Why is that?”
“She never told him who she was though until much later. She was worried about how he was going to react.”
Gary thought a little bit about her words.
“I will tell you more about it later. Tonight, when I go to see my mom, I will go and ask my mom to have you over.”
“Oh….will she be against that?”
“No, of course not. She would be happy to see you. I just need to let her know, that is all.”
“I don’t think my mom will be against it at all, either. She would even encourage it honestly.”
Gary’s head turned a little bit to look at Jacob, who was busy talking with his friends. His thoughts went to his threat to her. He felt the need to protect her. Perhaps he was worrying too much about it. He focused back towards Fumi.
He simply watched her read her book as the bus was getting closer and closer back to home.
*******
“Mom, I home!” Gary yelled out the moment he reached inside the house. He closed the door behind him and locked it as he felt mentally tired after the day. He went and pulled the backpack from his shoulders and placed it comfortably by one of the chairs by the door.
He heard the footsteps in the home as his mother walked into the kitchen to look at him. “Hello, sweetie,” she told him. “How was school?”
“It was alright, for the most part, mom. Some of my teachers are……weird, but many of them are nice.”
“That is good. I admit I am a little worried about what you might have to go through at school. I don’t want to have to worry too much, but that is me.”
Gary could see that the TV was still on and was at low volume. He ignored it.
“So did you make any friends?” she asked him.
“Actually mom, I wanted to tell you something…..the girl next door. She is not only on my of my bus, but I made friends with her. Her name is Fumi, and her mother came from Japan.”
“That is wonderful, dearie.”
Gary went and twiddled his hands in front of her. His mother was watching him closely. He seemed nervous to talk too much about it.
“Mom…….I want to go and see her at her house. Would it be alright to do that?”
“Right now?”
“Yes,” he nodded.
Her mother shook a finger at him. “No, not tonight, my dear. Tomorrow yes, but you need to keep unpacking so I can figure out what to do with the empty boxes. Plus, I need you to work on your homework. Do you have homework?”
He looked down from her face. “I do……” he tried to say it lightly. It was enough for her to hear it.
“Well then……she will just have to wait till tomorrow then.”
Gary sighed as he was about to go to his bedroom when Stephanie walked up to him slowly.
“Don’t worry, son…..” she put her hand to his shoulder. “Tomorrow is Friday, and you will have the time to spend time with her, assuming that her parents are happy with that.”
“Alright, mom…….”
Chapter 3: September 9th, 1978
That night Gary slept in his bed. The bed that had been ordered and moved in was not exactly the most comfortable, but it was all that could be afforded with his mother’s current budget. He felt himself slip in and out of a dream. Perhaps it was a nightmare? Only the voices he heard while he slept provided any sort of explanation.
“Ha ha………” he heard a voice in his sleep. Gary could not tell where the sound was coming from as he felt like he was in a dark room. “You just move to this place…….you are a fucking joke!”
Gary tried to look towards the voice, but it was coming from everywhere. It sounded like a voice that he knew all too well. It was the voice of Jacob.
“Leave me alone……” Gary called out to him.
“Leave me alone,” Jacob’s voice echoed, mocking his voice. Gary knew that he was hearing him but could not see him. “So predictable. You come to my school and think you can take over it. Maybe I can use you to do my school work……”
Gary thought about his words as he spoke. “No, I am not doing your work. You do it if you care about it or not.”
“Shut that fucking trap of yours,” Jacob responded to him in the darkness. “Or I will beat it out of you.”
Gary himself just stood there. The voices of Jacob would be all over the place. He decided just not to say anything as he listened to it.
“Being silent, huh?” Jacob asked. “There is one way that I can hurt you. Fuck it if you just moved to this place. I know how to hurt people. Maybe……maybe….”
Gary saw part of the darkness lit up as he saw Fumi lay on the ground. Blood trickled around her. It appeared that she was dead.
“Want to ignore me now?” Jacob told him. “How about you come to the place that I tell you? Failure to do so and it will mean me putting my fist to her face over and over again……you know that I will do it. Just like the other student from where you came from……., right?”
Gary felt his heartbeat increase. He refused to answer back to him.
“You know that I will hurt her because you bring your filth to here. My dad fought in that war. He saw his friend get shot…..all thanks to the Chinese. Then everyone just says they forgot about that war. Remember my complete name. Remember Jacob. Remember my last name…..Carter. Come to there……come to my place to rest…..”
Gary’s eyes opened up. The darkness of the nearly full moon illuminated the room a little bit. He realized he just had a dream. He breathed a sigh of relief. A part of his brain, however, told him that he should be ready. He would have seen Jacob tomorrow. He probably figured that his dream was a little bit extreme of what his brain was telling him and that he was worried too much about nothing.
*******
Gary was walking down at recess the next day. His thoughts were in the scenario that Jacob put him in. He was worried about Fumi and to confront him. The school building was always to his right as he walked. It was just after lunchtime, and students were outside playing and enjoying the sun. Like it was yesterday, Gary tried to find Fumi, but she was nowhere to be seen. There were cliques of students that were all in different spots all over the playground. Girls all talking to each other and boys that hung out and played by the various gym equipment outside, recess was a place for students to relax and play.
The grass was green and natural to walk on underneath Gary’s feet. He wondered about a little bit as he thought about the bigger kid from class. There was an exposed lip to the playgrounds that he noted. It went around the other side where the fence still covered the school but could not be seen by the teacher’s eyes very easily. This was a place that Gary was getting a hint where Jacob might be located. He didn’t want to be in this section yesterday. He noticed that some students would be talking to others, but they seemed to be rather mean looking. It was not an area that he felt comfortable. He surmised that this had to be eighth grader territory, and it had to be where Jacob and his friends would typically roost.
He reached the corner and made the turn. The hidden lip would mean that the teacher could no longer see him. He felt nervous and scared. He was not in a safe place, and if he were in danger, then no one would see it. The brick walls were close to his side.
Interestingly, there was no one there as he saw yesterday before, but it was only from a distance. Up close today, there was no one there. The distant sounds of kids playing were the only sounds he could hear. With no one around him that he could see, he wasn’t going to be there any longer than he wanted to be.
Suddenly he felt a sharp blow hit him on the back of the head. It was quick and hard-hitting. He felt his body almost go limp. It caused him to fall forward to the grass below him.
Gary landed in the grass with a thud. He remembered putting his hand to the back of his head and looking at seeing a little bit of blood. He remembered hearing the laughter of kids behind and above him as he lay bleeding on the grass.
“Perhaps that should be a lesson moving to this school, Chinaman,” he heard a familiar voice.
Gary barely recognized that it was Jacob. His pain was throbbing hard. His hands were cradled to his head as he felt nothing but pain. The agony made him want to cry as he tried to move his body. He turned his head just enough to hear laughter from another student. He recognized that it was Jacob and another jock that was with him. Jacob’s hand was balled up like a fist.
“Wh…….why…….why?” Gary struggled to say.
“Everything was doing well until more and more of you commie bastards start moving into our great nation. You Chinese need to go home and leave us the fuck alone!” Jacob yelled at him.
Gary knew that he had fallen into Jacob’s trap. He went to the area where he was most vulnerable to getting attacked at the school. Jacob was simply trying to play friends, so that way, he could hurt him.
“Please……” Gary tried to get up. He wasn’t able to finish his sentence.
Jacob walked up and delivered a kick while Gary was down. The kick struck into his ribs as he flew a couple of feet and rolled to his back. The pain was all over his body. He gripped the grass beneath him to try to anchor himself.
“Yeah, kick his ass, Jacob!” yelled his companion.
Both of the students that we're ganging up on the seventh-grader were bigger and stronger than he ever was. He was in a two to one fight, and he was already taking a beating. He was in big trouble, and he only had one course of action.
“Help!” Gary yelled. “Somebody help…..”
The teen took another blow to his arm as he felt Jacob’s foot slam into him. The pain was continuing all over him. A little bit of sand was kicked up into the air from the ground as Gary tried again to call for help. His hearing range was drowned out by building and the other kids in the distance that were playing.
“No one to help you out, Chinaman,” Jacob told him. “I couldn’t believe that you fell for me trying to offer you money to do my homework or me threatening your girlfriend. I need to do that more often. I might be able to get more people this way.”
“You tell him, Jacob,” the other student told him. “Let’s bruise him up.”
Gary tried to get up but felt the large boot press down on his stomach. Jacob then bent down and grabbed Gary’s hand. He suddenly grabbed a finger as if he was ready to break his finger in front of him.
“Leave him alone!” a voice called out.
The voice they heard took everyone by surprise. It did not come from the three teen boys. It was the sound of a girl. It was a voice that Gary already knew.
Jacob stopped and stood up as he looked at who came up behind them. Gary could recognize that it was Fumi that came up to them.
“Fumi run!” Gary yelled out to him.
“Shut up, Chinaman,” Jacob responded as he kept his gaze at the girl. Fumi was keeping her ground. She did not move and simply stood there defiant. She had a look of determination as she held her ground against the two towering boys.
Jacob and his friend simply walked up to the little girl as Gary struggled to get up. He felt pain throughout his body. He felt the need to protect her from the two bullies.
“Little Jap, get the fuck out of here, or we will do as we did to him to you,” Jacob almost yelled at her. “Don’t think we will hesitate to hit a girl!”
“Leave Gary alone,” Fumi told him. “I won’t let you hurt him.”
“Oh, and what are you going to do about it?”
Fumi tried to step around him, but Jacob’s friend stood in the way, trying to block her from getting to him.
“I am warning you, Jap! Get out of the way, or we will put you down!”
Gary managed to get on his knees as he pulled himself up. The sooner he could reach them, the better. Fumi was determined to stop the two.
“I am going to Gary, and he is going to get help,” Fumi said.
“Last warning, “ Jacob told her and then looked at his friend. “John, grab her by the throat!”
“No…..” Gary told him.
Gary watched as John, Jacob’s friend, took his hand and grabbed Fumi by the throat. His large hand engulfed her throat with ease. His adrenaline surged as he watched the scene unfurl. He practically tried to charge forward even with the pain in his ribs. There was something though that was odd with the scene though……
“John, squeeze her throat!” Jacob commanded.
“I am! Nothing is happening!” John responded.
Gary paused as he watched the event. John had a firm grip on Fumi’s throat, but no matter how hard he squeezed, nothing happened. He did not harm her.
Suddenly Fumi, with one hand, went and grabbed John’s hand and yanked it away from her throat. She then twisted john’s hand and used her other hand to grab onto the wrist of John. With one quick jolt, she rotated her hand and pressed down hard on John’s elbow. John was in no position to struggle as Gary could hear a sickening sound of bones breaking.
“Ah!” John screamed as Jacob was taken by surprise. Fumi broke and dislocated John’s hand. He was in no position to try to fight back. Fumi let go of him as she then looked up at Jacob. She kept the same determined composure as before.
Jacob’s surprise went to anger. He balled up his fist, pulled it back, and with all his strength, slammed it directly into Fumi’s face.
Gary watched in horror as the fist struck hard and did absolutely nothing to Fumi. The fist hit her and came to a dead stop as it impacted her. The punch almost sounded like it impacted a brick wall altogether.
Jacob’s fingers buckled and snapped under the impact. There was a horrific scream that came from the teen as he fell to the ground screaming in pain. Fumi was entirely untouched like nothing happened to her.
Fumi decided to ignore the two teens and instead go straight to Gary. Gary’s jaw dropped at watching everything that happened.
“You……were just……like a ninja with how you…….fought,” Gary tried to say.
He felt the warmth of Fumi’s hand as she wrapped her hand around his.
“What the hell is going on?” said a running teacher that came around the building. The male teacher saw the scene in front of him. He saw the two teens on the ground with Gary barely standing beside Fumi, who came to his side.
“Those two boys attacked Gary, and he tried to defend himself,” Fumi explained. “I saw everything, Mr. Jackson. Jacob tried to hurt me, as well.”
“Jacob Carter…..” Mr. Jackson shook his head, looking at the two boys on the ground. “I had a feeling it was you trying to do this,” the teacher then turned to look at the other on the ground. “And his friend John Baxter. Why am I not surprised at this?”
“That bitch hurt Baxter!” Jacob yelled back.
“Enough! I know enough that you go and try to hurt other students. Perhaps I should tell your coach and make sure that you get expelled from the football team? It looks like Gary here was just trying to defend himself. Isn’t that right?”
Gary, for a very brief moment, felt Fumi’s hand tighten around his as if she was gesturing him to play along with what she said. “Yes……yes, Mr. Jackson. They attacked me and then tried to hurt her. I fought back.”
Mr. Jackson came up and looked at Gary. He went and put his hand and could see the welt in the back of his head. A little bit of blood was still dripping from it. The teacher was categorizing the scene. He could see Gary was cradling his ribs.
“Gary, we are getting you to the clinic. Jacob and John here will be treated as well, but I think principal Blackwall will see you two boys in his office after this. You will be explaining all that after you are treated and see the principal along with the new paddle that he got.”
“Dah…..” Jacob stood up. John himself was cradling his wrist as he got up. Led by an escort, all the students were led around the corner of the building. They were then led to the back entrance of the school. A few students could see the group of students as they neared the door.
Busted and in pain, Gary’s eyes went to Fumi as he turned and walked with her. She held onto his arm with the most gentle and calmness she ever had. He was left with bewilderment at what he saw earlier. Fumi simply smiled at him and seemed more concerned about him than herself. It would be something that would echo in his mind for some time.

“My poor baby,” Mrs. Lee said as she was at the school. Her mother had been called in to notify her of the incident that transpired.
They stood in the school clinic. Fumi, along with the principal and the school nurse, were all present. They were being told of what had happened. The school clinic was a small room dedicated to taking care of the sick or injured students. Jacob and John were kept in a separate place under supervision and were also being treated as well. Gary and Fumi sat on the bed for the sick students as Gary’s mother stood to talk with the principal. The school nurse, a friendly young woman, was checking over the teen’s wounds.
“On behalf of the school, I apologize for the way your child has been treated today, Mrs. Lee. I will assure you that the two students will be dealt with.”
“How is he?” She asked the nurse.
The nurse had her hand, checking the worst spots. She already had finished examining the back of the head and was now testing the ribs by lifting Gary’s shirt. There was a nasty bruise that she saw.
“From what I can tell,” the nurse explained. “He took a blow to the back of the head, but it will heal up quickly. The ribs do have some bruising. I don’t see anything broken on him, but it will take a few days for it to heal. I would recommend that he return Tuesday to allow enough time for it to heal. I wouldn’t recommend that he doesn’t do anything wild or crazy until it heals then.”
Mrs. Lee nodded her head. She was looking at Gary with concern, but it seemed that the injuries were not that bad, at least.
“I will promise you that Jacob and John will be dealt with,” the principal continued. “From the report, they tried to attack Fumi, but Gary tried to protect her. He managed to do just that. Jacob was making racial obscenities towards both of them. Your son is lucky not to be in the worst shape. If you wish, you may go and press charges on the two, and we can proceed further, but I assure you that they will be dealt with. They already have a record, and they will face harsher punishment as a result.”
She shook her head. “I don’t think that will be necessary. What about Fumi?”
“Fumi is alright,” the nurse told her. “She is unharmed.”
“I have already contacted Mrs. Yuki and let her know of the situation that happened,” the principal continued. “She is going to be coming to pick her up. I am releasing Gary and Fumi today after the recent events. It will allow everyone to heal after the events today.”
“Thank you, Principal Farrow. Go ahead and contact Mrs. Yuki. I will go ahead and bring both my son and her back home.”
“I will do that. Take care, and I wish you a good weekend for all of you,” the principal concluded. He opened up the door and left the clinic as he went to deal with the troublemakers that started the problem.
“Fumi, would your mother have any issue me taking you back home since we are next door anyway?” Gary’s mother asked her.
“No, if anything, my mom would be grateful for your courtesy,” Fumi replied. “Thank you, Mrs. Lee.”
“I don’t mind helping you. Anything to help out our neighbors.”
Gary put his hand to his side. There was a nice bandage wrap that was there that protected the bruise from where he was struck. He tried to shake away the fight as Fumi put her hand to his arm. He still remembered the fight well and the mysteries of this girl. Why did she not get hurt during that fight?

The return home was a calm and peaceful one. Gary and Fumi sat in the back seat as the mother was driving them back home. It was an excellent fifteen-minute trip back home as the mother concentrated on taking both of the kids back home. The car ride was comfortable and easy for everyone.
“I wish that we had a chance to meet under better circumstances, Fumi,” Mrs. Lee told her with her eyes momentarily looking at the rearview mirror towards her.
“It’s alright, Mrs. Lee,” Fumi replied. “Your son protected me from those two. If it weren’t for him, they would have hurt me.”
“They didn’t care, mom,” Gary told her. “They attacked me, saying that I was a commie.”
Gary’s mom simply shook her head. “Such cruelty that can befall us. At least you are safe with us.”
“Indeed,” she replied as she continued her talk with Fumi. “So tell me, how long have you lived in this neighborhood?”
“Over ten years, Mrs. Lee,” she replied. “I am used to this, and I love this place.”
“So, you were born here and not Japan?”
“Yes, I was born here, but my mom was born in Japan.”
“Do you like it here in California?”
“Yes, I do. Gary tried to tell me that you married in Chinatown?”
“That is partially correct,” Gary’s mother replied. “There are a couple of Chinatowns in California. San Francisco and Los Angeles are good examples. I met and married Mr. Lee in San Francisco. That is how I had Gary here.”
Fumi turned her head and looked at Gary. There was a smile on her face that made Gary smile back. Gary had made his decision then and there.
“Mom, can I go and see Fumi at her house today?”
“You certainly can if you feel well enough.”
Fumi looked at Gary’s body and then back to his eyes. “Are you ok?”
Gary nodded in response. “I feel pain, but nothing that should stop me.”
“You pretty much asked me yesterday about this,” his mother replied. “You managed to finish up unpacking up everything in your room, right?”
“Yes…..for the most part.”
“Hmm….alright. Say hello to…..who is your mother’s name again?” she asked Fumi.
“Eshima Yuki.”
“Eshima. Say hello to her for me, will you?”
“I will.”
There were a couple of turns here and there along the way. The car crossed an intersection, as they were getting close to home.
“So Fumi, does your mom like to go shopping?” His mother asked her.
Fumi paused very briefly before answering. “Yes, she does.”
“Well, tell her this weekend I wouldn’t mind going shopping with her. I have so much to learn about this place.”
“My mom would be more than willing to help you get acquainted with this place, Mrs. Lee.”
“I wouldn’t mind getting a chance to learn about some traditions that the Japanese do,” she replied with a smile. I am used to Chinese traditions and customs…..of course, I guess it doesn’t matter now….”
“Your husband…..” Fumi looked down. “I am so sorry what happened to you and Gary.”
She kept her attention forward as she spoke to her. “I miss him…..dearly.”
“I know what it is like to lose family,” she told her. “I never even met my father.”
“Well, us women learn to stick together, Fumi. If you ever need my help, just let me know.”
“I will, and thank you.”
“You are very welcome,” she replied with a smile.

It was a couple of hours later, and it was after an early dinner. Gary was ready to meet and get to associate with Fumi some more finally. He was more than anticipating the event. Even with the recent move, he was thinking about her more and more. In less than a day, he had made a friend and a seemingly invincible one. He had to learn more about her if it were the last thing he would do.
