“Filthy street rat, you want to sleep with the most beautiful woman in Silverton?”
Ethan Blackthorn had barely stepped out of the crowded train station when a heavily made-up woman in flashy, cheap clothes blocked his path.
Ethan blinked. “Sleep with the number one beauty of Silverton City?”
The woman scowled. “Are you deaf or just stupid? I’m talking to you!”
“You’re the one who looks like she crawled out of a dumpster,” Ethan shot back, finally snapping out of his daze.
She let out a mocking laugh. “Look at yourself. If you’re not a beggar, what are you?”
Ethan glanced down at his plain, worn clothes. She wasn’t entirely wrong. He had spent his entire life training with his seven masters in the remote highlands of the Shadowpeak Mountains, where the nearest town was five hundred miles away. Fashion had never been a priority.
Seeing the disgust on her face, Ethan said coldly, “I never imagined someone could be both ugly and blind at the same time.”
The woman—Madison Harrington—looked like she wanted to slap him right there.
But she held herself back. I went through too much trouble to find a random lowlife for this. He’s perfect for ruining that bitch Serena Blake.
She forced a cold smile. “Enough bullshit. Are you in or not?”
“No.”
Ethan had come down from the mountains for one reason only: to find the legendary Map of Mountains and Rivers, the artifact tied to the mystery of his own origins. He had no time to waste on this ridiculous woman or whatever scam she was running.
Madison’s eyes widened in fury. “You dare reject me?”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Ethan replied flatly. “What are you, some kind of three-headed monster?”
“Hmph! For your information, I’m from the Harrington family—one of the top clans in Silverton. Cross me and I’ll make the rest of your life a living hell.”
Ethan almost laughed. His first master was the Grandmaster of the Arcane Warriors Guild. His second master ran the Oracle Society. His third was the leader of the Eternal Healers Order. His fourth controlled the largest financial empire on the continent. His fifth was a High Cardinal of the Holy Order. His sixth commanded the Shadow Legion, the world’s most feared private military force. His seventh master was… well, complicated, but equally powerful.
On his eighteenth birthday last year, they had all given him tokens of their power. In simple terms, Ethan was now richer than most countries and strong enough to shake the entire world if he wanted.
And this overdressed woman thought her little family name could intimidate him?
Where does she get the nerve?
If she weren’t a woman, Ethan would have already slapped some sense into her.
“Listen,” he said indifferently, “stop wasting my time. Go find someone else for your little game. I’m not interested.”
Madison’s face twisted with anger. “You think I’m trying to scam you?”
“Aren’t you?” Ethan sneered.
Without another word, she pulled out her phone and shoved a video in front of his face.
In the dimly lit hotel room shown on the screen, a young woman was tied to the bed. Her hair covered most of her face, but her body was stunning—curves that could make any man lose his mind. She twisted and writhed against the ropes like a serpent, her long, smooth legs moving sensually.
Ethan felt heat rush through him. But he immediately noticed the glazed look in her eyes and the unnatural flush on her skin. She had clearly been drugged with something strong.
“So, street rat? Tempted yet?” Madison asked smugly.
“You drugged her?” Ethan’s voice dropped low.
Madison smirked. “Finally using your brain.”
“Why?” he asked. “What’s your grudge against her?”
“She stole my man.”
Ethan looked at her like she was pathetic. “Or the guy you want simply chose her instead?”
Madison’s expression faltered for a second. She hadn’t expected this filthy-looking guy to see through her so quickly.
“So what if that’s true?” she snapped. “She’s nothing. No father, her mother’s dying in the hospital, and even her own family hates her. She has no right to compete with me!”
Ethan gave her a sarcastic thumbs-up. He was genuinely impressed by how shameless she was.
“Where is she now?” he asked.
He had to help her.
Madison gave him a contemptuous look. “Hmph. Follow me.”
They walked to a nearby hotel just outside the station.
“She’s in this room right now, you filthy beggar,” Madison said with a wicked smile. “Go in and have your fun.”
Ethan stopped. “Wait.”
“What now?” she asked impatiently.
He hid the rising anger in his chest and forced a casual smile. “What’s the point of just sleeping with her? How about I record a video for you?”
Madison’s eyes lit up with cruel delight.
Of course! If I post the video online, the whole city will see what a whore Serena Blake really is. That would destroy her completely.
A vicious grin spread across her face. “You’re smarter than you look. Fine. Take the video.”
“No problem. Give me your phone.”
She handed it over without hesitation.
The moment Ethan stepped inside the room and closed the door, his expression turned ice-cold. He crushed the phone in his hand, shattering it. That video of the girl would never see the light of day.
Just as he had seen, a breathtaking young woman was tied to the bed. Even with her hair partially covering her face, her figure was intoxicating. As the drug took full effect, she writhed even more desperately. Her short gray skirt had ridden up high, exposing her smooth, pale thighs.
Ethan’s heart pounded. His breathing grew heavy. The sight was enough to test the limits of any man’s self-control.
Then her face became visible.
Ethan froze.
She was impossibly beautiful. Flushed cheeks, full lips, and eyes hazy with lust. In all his twenty years, he had never seen a woman this stunning.
But her breathing was becoming dangerously fast, and her eyes were turning bloodshot. The drug was reaching a critical level. If he didn’t act soon, it could permanently damage her mind.
Ethan quickly snapped the ropes binding her wrists and ankles.
The second she was free, she pounced on him like a wild animal, pinning him down on the bed.
Shit.
His mind went blank. Twenty years of being single had not prepared him for this.
A cold rush of air hit his lower body. She had already yanked his pants down.
To his horror, his body reacted instantly.
Ethan panicked.
“Listen to me! You’ve been drugged—I can help you!”
“Don’t—fuck, not there!”
But it was too late. She straddled him in one swift motion.
A warm, tight heat enveloped him completely.
Ethan’s mind went white.
It was over. Everything was over.
Ethan Blackthorn wanted to cry. Not because he had just lost his virginity the moment he came down from the mountains. Not because he had been forced. And definitely not because he had only lasted a single hour. No — he was crying because of what his grandmaster had warned him about years ago.
His body carried the Nine Dragons Sacred Physique — an extremely rare and powerful constitution. Before his cultivation reached a high enough level, he could not be intimate with any woman. If he was, ninety percent of his hard-earned power would instantly transfer into her, temporarily stored inside her core. To reclaim it, he would have to sleep with her again within the next three months.
Otherwise, he would lose everything he had spent more than ten years building.
One step away from becoming truly unstoppable… and now this.
Serena Blake did not cry.
The effects of the drug had completely worn off and her mind was clear again. She knew exactly what had happened: Madison Harrington had drugged her and then sent this stranger to violate her. Yet no tears came. It wasn’t that she felt nothing — she was devastated. She simply couldn’t cry anymore.
Three years ago her father had died suddenly, and the company he built from nothing had been stolen by her uncle. Now her mother lay seriously ill in the hospital, and the rest of the Blake family couldn’t wait to get rid of both of them. Life had already beaten her down too many times.
Ethan suddenly blurted out, “Serena Blake, you have to take responsibility for me!”
Serena’s beautiful face darkened. I’m the one who was drugged and assaulted, and this guy has the nerve to demand I take responsibility?
“Why the hell should I take responsibility for you?” she asked coldly.
“Because you took my first time,” Ethan said, still teary-eyed.
Those words stabbed straight into Serena’s heart. “You bastard! It was my first time too!”
Ethan cried even harder. “I don’t care! You can’t just get dressed and act like none of this happened!”
“You…” Serena trembled with rage. This guy is a complete scoundrel!
Ethan’s tone suddenly changed. “However… if you really don’t want to take responsibility, we can just do it one more time.”
Serena was so furious she nearly spat blood. Shameless! No wonder Madison chose someone like him.
Before she could explode, the hotel room door was kicked open.
Madison Harrington strutted in with a triumphant, arrogant smile.
“Well, well. The number one beauty of Silverton City, defiled by a filthy street rat. If this gets out, it’ll be the biggest scandal the city has ever seen!”
Serena’s eyes burned crimson with humiliation and rage. “Madison, you vile bitch!”
Madison’s face twisted. She turned to Ethan. “So, street rat, how do you want this whore to take responsibility?”
“Of course she should marry me!” Ethan declared immediately.
Getting her to sleep with me again in the next three months is going to be almost impossible right now. Marrying her first is the smartest move. Plus, I took her virginity — I should take responsibility. And with how bad her situation is, marrying me would change her life overnight.
Madison’s eyes lit up with cruel delight. If Serena marries this beggar, Julian Voss will finally give up on her for good!
She smirked. “Fine. I agree.”
“I won’t marry him!” Serena shouted.
Madison’s smile turned vicious. “You won’t? Then I guess your mother can be thrown out of the hospital tomorrow. And that pathetic little bar you own can go bankrupt too.”
Serena’s face went deathly pale.
Those two things were her only lifelines. If her mother was kicked out of the hospital, she wouldn’t survive long. And the bar was her only source of income — and her last hope of someday taking back the Blake Corporation.
After a long, painful silence, Serena finally spoke in a heavy voice. “Fine… I’ll marry him.”
When they left the City Hall with the marriage certificate in hand, Serena’s beautiful peach-blossom eyes were red and swollen. She looked like her entire world had collapsed.
Ethan tried to comfort her. “Don’t be sad. You’ll realize soon that marrying me was the luckiest thing that ever happened to you.”
Serena stayed silent, her eyes growing even dimmer.
When did I fall so low that marrying a beggar is considered ‘incredible luck’?
Madison burst out laughing as if it was the funniest joke she had ever heard. “That’s right, Serena. You must have saved the galaxy in your past life to marry this filthy street rat. From now on, you two lovebirds better live happily ever after.”
She gave a malicious grin. “And if you dare divorce him, I’ll never let you off. Understand?”
Serena nodded numbly.
Just then, a sleek black luxury car screeched to a stop beside them. Before it had even fully parked, a well-dressed, handsome young man jumped out.
The moment Serena saw him, her body stiffened. Madison, however, smiled brightly and immediately latched onto his arm. “Julian, did you see my post?”
Julian Voss shook her off with a disgusted expression. His eyes were locked on the marriage certificate in Serena’s hand.
“Madison,” he said icily, “did you force Serena to marry this beggar?”
Madison smiled smugly. “Of course. A slut like Serena could never be worthy of you. This filthy street rat is her perfect match.”
Ethan finally understood. So everything was done for this guy’s sake.
Julian’s face twisted with rage. Without warning — SMACK! — he slapped Madison hard across the face.
Madison clutched her burning cheek, stunned. “Julian, you… you hit me?!”
“Shut the fuck up!” Julian roared. “If it weren’t for the friendship between our families, I would kill you right now!”
Madison’s anger exploded. “Julian Voss, I know you like Serena, but I will never let you have her! And let me tell you — I already had this filthy beggar defile that whore!”
Julian’s eyes turned blood-red. He kicked Madison violently, sending her crashing to the ground, then pounced on her, raining down blows.
Ethan watched the scene with a cold, amused smile. Serena’s expression remained somber.
After Julian finally stopped, he stormed over to Ethan, eyes sharp as knives.
“Kid, if you don’t want to die, divorce Serena right now,” he ordered coldly.
Ethan’s expression turned annoyed. This piece of trash dares to threaten me?
Before he could speak, Serena said calmly, “There’s no need. I will not divorce him.”
Julian looked frantic. “Serena, even though you’ve been… defiled, I don’t care! Divorce this beggar immediately. He can’t give you the life you deserve.”
Serena shook her head. “I’m sorry. I won’t get a divorce.”
Julian exploded. “Fuck! Serena, you really are a slut! Did you get addicted to this beggar screwing you? Haven’t I treated you well? Without my protection, do you think your shitty little bar would have survived?”
Serena’s face turned deathly pale and she swayed on her feet.
Ethan’s anger flared. “Cut the crap. You’re only pretending to be the great lover because you want to steal my wife’s fortune.”
Both Julian and Serena looked shocked.
“You filthy beggar, what the hell are you talking about?!” Julian roared.
Ethan reached out and ripped the pendant from Serena’s neck in one smooth motion. A large crimson gemstone glittered in the center.
Julian’s face changed drastically.
Ethan laughed coldly. “Using a Fortune Siphon Amulet on her and you still dare to say you’ve been ‘good’ to my wife?”
Serena asked in a trembling voice, “Ethan… what do you mean?”
“My silly wife, haven’t you noticed how your luck has been terrible ever since you started wearing this? It’s a cursed artifact designed to drain your fortune and transfer it to someone else.”
Julian started panicking. “Serena, don’t listen to this trash! How could I ever give you something evil? To prove my sincerity, I’ll invest a hundred million into your bar right now!”
Ethan sneered. “Still trying to struggle? Too bad you ran into me. Tell me, Julian — what do you think will happen to the Voss family if I crush this thing?”
Julian’s face turned pale. “You filthy beggar, you wouldn’t dare!”
Ethan shrugged and crushed the crimson gemstone in his palm.
BOOM!
Julian Voss’s face turned deathly pale. It was over. Completely over. The Voss family’s fortune had been shattered, and he was about to suffer the full backlash.
The thought had barely crossed his mind when—
SPURT!
A fountain of blood erupted from his mouth. A second later, he collapsed unconscious on the ground.
Serena Blake gasped. She never expected Julian to become so enraged that he would literally vomit blood and faint. Ethan Blackthorn, however, knew exactly what was happening — Julian was suffering the backlash from the destroyed Fortune Siphon Amulet.
Serena was about to call an ambulance when her phone suddenly rang. The caller ID showed it was her mother’s attending physician. She answered immediately. Whatever the doctor said made her face turn white as a sheet.
“I—I’ll be right there!” she stammered.
She hung up and turned to Ethan. “Follow me!”
They rushed to the hospital in a panic. The moment Serena pushed open the door to the private room, she saw her mother lying motionless on the bed, barely clinging to life. Serena dropped to her knees beside her, tears streaming down her face. She wanted to speak, but the words choked in her throat.
She had imagined this moment countless times. She thought she was prepared. But now that it was actually happening, she realized she wasn’t prepared at all.
Her mother managed a weak smile and shakily reached out to caress her daughter’s cheek, her eyes full of reluctance and regret.
“Silly girl… don’t cry. Actually… this isn’t so bad. Ever since your father passed, I’ve missed him every single day. Now I can finally go to him… and I’m happy. My only worry… is you.”
She paused, gently wiping away Serena’s tears.
“After I’m gone… sell the bar. The Blake family will never let you claim the inheritance. And if you ever find a boy whose eyes are only for you… tell your father and me… so we can smile… in the afterlife.”
Her voice grew fainter and fainter until it was almost inaudible. The hand caressing Serena’s cheek slipped lifelessly onto the bed.
Serena panicked. She clutched her mother’s hand tightly. “Mom, please don’t leave me! You haven’t even seen me in a wedding dress yet! Mom, I got married! Let me show him to you! Mom, say something!”
Heart-wrenching sobs filled the hospital room.
Ethan’s chest tightened as he listened. He stepped closer and said softly, “Serena, don’t be afraid. I’m here. Your mom is going to be fine.”
Serena seemed to barely hear him. Her crying only grew more desperate.
Ethan moved forward and placed two fingers on her mother’s wrist, checking her pulse.
“What are you doing?! Get away from my mom!” Serena shrieked through her tears.
“I’m checking her condition,” Ethan replied calmly.
“Shut up! Get out! Do you hear me?!”
Ethan ignored her. After a moment he released the wrist.
“Hmm. It was originally just a minor kidney issue… but how did she end up poisoned with Shadowstar Venom? That’s what destroyed her kidneys. Still… it’s not a big problem.”
Serena stared at him in disbelief. “Ethan, what the hell are you trying to do right now?!”
“I want to save your mom,” he said simply.
“Shut up! You think you can save her just by saying it? Who do you think you are?!”
Ethan gave a small laugh. “You’re actually right about that. I can save her just by saying so.”
Serena was too furious and heartbroken to even speak. How can he still be spouting nonsense at a time like this?
Looking at her mother, who had already slipped away, Serena broke down again. This wasn’t sadness anymore — it was pure despair. She had completely given up. Why is fate so cruel to me? I’ve never done anything to deserve this.
Her vision suddenly blurred. Ethan knew she was about to faint from shock. Sure enough, she swayed and collapsed. He caught her smoothly and gently laid her on the empty bed beside her mother.
She’s suffered too many blows today. Letting her rest for a while will be better. Besides… while she’s unconscious, I can save her mother. When she wakes up, it’ll be the surprise of her life.
With that thought, Ethan moved quickly to her mother’s side. Her breathing was now barely a whisper — she was on the edge of death.
Without hesitation, he pricked his own finger. A single drop of golden blood welled up. (Yes — Ethan’s blood was golden. On his sixteenth birthday, his grandmaster had forced him to swallow an actual dragon. The transformation that followed had made him immune to weapons and poisons, dramatically boosted his power, and gave his blood the ability to bring someone back from the brink of death.)
He let the golden drop fall into her mother’s mouth.
Within moments, her deathly pale face regained a healthy rosy color. Her weak breathing grew strong and steady. Her closed eyes slowly fluttered open.
Ethan wasn’t surprised at all. He had seen the miraculous power of his blood many times before.
Just then, Serena — who had fainted earlier — suddenly woke up. She rushed to her mother’s bedside and immediately burst into loud sobs.
“Child… why are you crying?” her mother asked weakly.
Serena froze. Did I just hear Mom’s voice? It must be a hallucination… I miss her too much.
She started crying again.
Her mother gently placed a hand on her head. “Silly child… I’m all right.”
BOOM!
Serena’s mind went blank. She stared at her mother, who now looked completely healthy, as if nothing had happened. What’s going on? Just moments ago she was… gone. How is she alive? Am I dreaming?
She rubbed her eyes hard. When she confirmed it was real, pure joy exploded across her face. “Mom! Mom, you’re really okay?!”
Her mother nodded. “It seems so. The pain is gone too.”
Serena cried again, but this time they were tears of overwhelming joy.
Ethan smiled. “See, Serena? I told you I could save her.”
Serena stopped crying and looked at him with suspicion. Did he really save Mom? She found it hard to believe. But there was no one else in the room.
“You… you saved my mother?”
Ethan grinned. “That’s right. Besides being ridiculously handsome, my medical skills are pretty good too.”
“How did you do it?” Serena asked urgently.
Before Ethan could answer, a cold voice drifted in from the doorway.
“Bullshit! It was my master who saved her. How dare a piece of trash like you try to steal the credit?”
The door opened and two men walked in — one elderly, one in his thirties. The old man had long white hair and carried himself like a mystical sage. The younger man wore a white doctor’s coat but had a sleazy, lascivious look in his eyes. This was Dr. Damian Crowe, her mother’s attending physician.
“Dr. Crowe… what do you mean?” Serena asked, confused.
Dr. Crowe snorted. “Serena, you can’t seriously believe this beggar saved your mother, can you?”
Serena’s gaze shifted to Ethan. She wanted to believe him, but… he was just a beggar. It was far more likely he was trying to take credit for someone else’s work.
Ethan read the doubt in her eyes and sighed internally. This girl really hates me.
“Honorable doctor,” Ethan asked calmly, “may I ask exactly how you saved her mother?”
Dr. Crowe sneered. “I couldn’t save her myself, but my master can. And let me tell you, beggar — my master is the Grandmaster of the Eternal Healers Order!”
Serena’s mind reeled. Everyone in Silverton knew of the Eternal Healers Order — a legendary organization whose leader was said to possess unparalleled medical skills.
She looked at Dr. Crowe with deep gratitude. “Dr. Crowe… thank you.”
Dr. Crowe was secretly thrilled. She actually believed it so easily. Now she’ll be completely in my grasp. His eyes lingered on Serena’s stunning face and figure as he smiled inwardly.
Out loud he said humbly, “Serena, don’t mention it. Healing the sick is my duty. As long as there is even the slightest hope, I will never give up.”
Ethan couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst out laughing.
“Kid, what are you laughing at?” Dr. Crowe demanded, his expression turning ugly.
Ethan sneered. “Why are you pretending to be the Grandmaster of the Eternal Healers Order? Are you trying to get yourself killed?”
“Bullshit! My master is the Grandmaster!”
Serena cut in coldly, “Ethan, shut up!”
“Serena, I was the one who saved your mother. If you don’t believe me, ask her yourself,” Ethan said.
Serena turned to her mother. “Mom… who really saved you?”
Her mother looked confused. “Ning’er… I don’t know. When I woke up, the only person I saw was Ethan.”
Ethan smiled. “See? Your mother woke up and saw me. That’s proof enough.”
Dr. Crowe immediately countered, “Nonsense! My master saved her, but he’s a man above fame and fortune. He didn’t want you to feel overly indebted, so he left quietly. I couldn’t stand by and let this trash steal the credit!”
The explanation sounded perfectly logical. Serena believed it instantly. After all, how could a beggar possibly know advanced medicine?
Her eyes turned cold as she looked at Ethan. “Leave. I don’t want to see you.”
Ethan wanted to argue, but he could see it was pointless right now. He stepped back to the side of the room. I’m not actually leaving. First, I need to protect my own cultivation. Second, I can’t let these two scumbags trick her into paying with her body out of desperation. And third… they dared to impersonate the leader of the Eternal Healers Order — which belongs to my third master. I’m going to make them regret this.
Dr. Crowe snapped, “You’ve got some nerve, beggar. Serena told you to leave.”
Serena ignored Ethan and asked, “Dr. Crowe, is my mother fully recovered?”
Dr. Crowe nodded and glanced at the old man.
The old man said solemnly, “Miss Blake, your mother is indeed fully recovered. However… there is a problem with your body.”
Serena’s face paled. “Grandmaster… what’s wrong with me?”
The old man sighed gravely. “Someone has placed a sinister curse on you. They are stealing your fortune. If this continues, you will die a violent death within three days.”
Serena’s heart jolted. She suddenly remembered what Ethan had said about the pendant. Could everything he told me be true?
Ethan was also slightly surprised. This old fraud can actually see the fortune siphoning. He’s not completely useless.
“Grandmaster, I’m begging you — please save me!” Serena pleaded, her voice shaking.
Her mother joined in desperately. “Grandmaster, please save my daughter! I’m willing to pay any price!”
The old man sighed again. “Miss Blake… a healer should have a benevolent heart. To be honest… I can save you… and yet I cannot.”
Serena turned deathly pale. “What… what do you mean?”
The old man explained, “I can detect the curse. But to break it completely, you must find a man of exceptional fortune and… be intimate with him three times.”
BOOM!
Serena’s mind went completely blank.
A terrifying wave of killing intent exploded from Ethan’s eyes.
Son of a bitch. After all that fancy talk… these two bastards want to sleep with my wife three times?
Serena Blake stared at the old man in disbelief. She truly wanted to believe him. After all, he was supposed to be the Grandmaster of the Eternal Healers Order — a man whose reputation stood above suspicion.
She wanted to live, of course. But she had just married Ethan Blackthorn at City Hall. How could she possibly sleep with another man, even to save her own life? The very idea made her stomach turn.
The old man — Master Harlan Graves — spoke again, his voice heavy with concern. “Miss Blake, your situation is actually even more serious than I first described.”
Amelia Blake (Serena’s mother) asked urgently, “Grandmaster, you must know someone with truly exceptional fortune, right?”
Master Graves nodded slowly. “I do know such a person… but I’m not sure if I should say it.”
“Please, Grandmaster! Tell us!” Amelia begged.
“The person I’m referring to is my own disciple, Dr. Damian Crowe,” Graves said smoothly. “His family background is excellent, and as my direct apprentice, he carries one of the strongest fortunes in the world. Being intimate with him three times would be enough to neutralize the curse completely.”
Ethan, still standing quietly in the corner of the room, sneered inwardly. So that’s your real plan, you old fraud.
Out loud he suddenly asked, “The Shadowstar Venom that was in Serena’s mother… you two are the ones who poisoned her, aren’t you?”
Both Dr. Damian Crowe and Master Harlan Graves flinched visibly.
It was true. They had secretly administered the poison so they could later “save” her and use it as leverage against Serena. They never expected her mother to deteriorate so quickly, forcing Damian to call Serena in a panic.
But how could this filthy beggar possibly know?
“Ethan, what kind of nonsense are you spouting now?!” Serena snapped, her beautiful face twisted with anger.
She refused to believe a single word. In her mind, Ethan was only lashing out because the Grandmaster had suggested she sleep with Damian. She could understand his jealousy, but slandering the leader of the Eternal Healers Order was too far. If they had really poisoned her mother, why would they be trying to save her now?
Ethan was speechless. Why does this woman refuse to believe anything I say?
Damian Crowe wanted to laugh. He had been wondering how to shut the beggar up, but Serena had done it for him.
“Serena,” Damian said righteously, “I don’t know what your relationship is with this garbage, but first he tries to steal my master’s credit, and now he’s slandering him? I can’t tolerate this. Tell him to leave right now. Otherwise, when my master gets angry, even I won’t be able to protect him.”
Serena’s heart trembled. This was the Grandmaster of the Eternal Healers Order — a man whose medical and martial prowess were legendary. If he became angry, Ethan would be finished.
“Get out,” Serena said coldly to Ethan.
Ethan was so frustrated he could barely speak. Seething with anger, he turned and stormed out of the hospital room.
Damian Crowe was secretly ecstatic. His eyes greedily traced Serena’s stunning face and alluring figure. He wanted to pounce on her right then and there, but he held back. He wanted her to come to him willingly.
“Alright, Serena, don’t be angry anymore,” Damian said gently. “Let’s talk about your condition.”
Serena nodded, looking at him gratefully. “Dr. Crowe, thank you for your kind offer… but I’ve decided not to go through with it.”
Damian’s heart sank. “Why?” he asked, unable to hide his disappointment.
“Because I’m married now,” Serena said calmly. “I don’t want to betray my husband.”
BOOM!
The hospital room fell into stunned silence.
Amelia Blake’s voice trembled. “Serena… who is it? Julian Voss? Or Victor Langford?”
“It’s neither of them,” Serena said, her expression dimming. “It’s Ethan Blackthorn.”
The revelation hit like a second bomb. All three of them — Amelia, Damian, and Master Graves — were thunderstruck.
Damian Crowe stared at Serena in complete shock. The number one beauty of Silverton City actually married a filthy street rat? His brain almost short-circuited.
Master Graves sneered. “No wonder dark clouds hang over your fate, Miss Blake. That trash is the one stealing your fortune! In fact, he’s probably the reason your mother suddenly worsened. He is a Heavenly Bane — a jinx destined to bring you ruin. If you stay with him, both of you will be dead within six months.”
Amelia asked frantically, “Grandmaster, is there any way to fix this?”
Graves put on a grave expression. “Divorce him. Immediately. Do not delay even one day.”
“I’m sorry,” Serena said firmly, “but divorce is impossible.”
Damian grew anxious. “Serena, your life is the most important thing! Every second you spend with that beggar is wasting it. Listen to me and divorce him right now!”
Amelia added softly, “Ning’er, I know you must have had a reason for marrying him… but I can’t lose you. Please, listen to us. Divorce him. Your life matters most.”
Serena’s heart sank. She had just felt the pain of nearly losing her mother — she couldn’t put her mother through that same agony. But she was already married. Even though the marriage had been forced, divorcing Ethan purely to save herself felt wrong. Besides, the family trial for the Blake Corporation inheritance was still six months away.
Once the trial is over, I can divorce him, she decided silently.
Damian tried again. “Serena, is that stinking beggar threatening you? If he is, I’ll deal with him immediately! The Crowe family may only be second-tier, but handling a piece of trash like him is easy. And with my master behind me…”
Serena shook her head. “You don’t need to persuade me anymore. Divorce is impossible. If this is my fate, then I’ll accept it.”
Her voice was quiet but carried unbreakable resolve.
Damian was so angry he felt like spitting blood. He had thought this would be easy to manipulate, but she refused to budge.
Master Graves cut in coldly, “Miss Blake, think very carefully. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Damian, let’s go.”
Though extremely reluctant, Damian followed his master out of the ward.
“Master, why did we leave? If we threaten her with her mother one more time, she’ll definitely agree!”
Graves sneered. “Idiot. Haven’t you realized the key to all of this is that beggar?”
Damian’s face twisted with rage. “Damn it! How could a filthy beggar marry Serena Blake?! Master, what should we do?”
“It’s simple,” Graves said viciously. “As long as that beggar disappears from this world forever, the rest will be easy.”
Damian’s eyes lit up. “You’re right! Once he’s gone, I refuse to believe Serena will keep refusing us!”
Graves laughed darkly. “Kid, when we finally get our hands on Serena Blake… I get the first taste.”
Damian was shocked. “Master… you’re interested in her too?”
“Nonsense! That woman is drop-dead gorgeous with a body that could kill a man. Even I can’t resist her!” Graves said with a sinister grin.
Damian felt a flash of annoyance, but he didn’t dare offend his master. Fine… if Master wants a turn first, so be it.
He forced a sly smile. “Master, actually… we could enjoy her together.”
Graves let out a malevolent laugh. “As expected of my good disciple! Once this is done, I’ll officially bring you into the Shadowveil Order.”
Damian was thrilled. “Master, how did you know Serena’s fortune was being drained?”
“Because the Voss family hired me to create that Fortune Siphon Amulet. It was specially made to absorb her luck.”
Damian asked curiously, “Master, Serena is already in such a miserable state. Does she even have any luck left worth stealing?”
“You don’t understand anything,” Graves sneered. “That girl possesses the Blood Phoenix Sacred Body — an incredibly rare and powerful fortune. Nine out of ten women with that physique are destined to become empresses or queens of their era. Marrying her would be good, but sleeping with her even once would bring unimaginable fortune.”
Damian’s heart trembled with greed.
As the two walked down the hospital corridor, a cold voice suddenly rang out behind them.
“So… you’re actually from the Shadowveil Order.”
The words had barely faded when Ethan Blackthorn appeared in front of them.
Master Harlan Graves broke into a sinister grin. “They say fools rush in where angels fear to tread. You refused the path to heaven and walked straight into hell. Boy, since you’ve heard everything… today I’ll personally send you there!”
The Shadowveil Order was the most sinister and feared organization in the underworld. It was said to have over a thousand disciples, each one a villain capable of unspeakable crimes.
The Shadowveil Order and the Eternal Healers Order had a long, bitter history. Ethan had once heard from his third master — the Grandmaster of the Eternal Healers Order — that the founders of both orders had been martial brothers. One chose the path of healing and benevolence, while the other embraced poison and malice.
Even if this impostor hadn’t helped the Voss family create the Fortune Siphon Amulet or tried to trick Serena, Ethan would have killed him anyway. His third master had given a clear order long ago: any member of the Shadowveil Order who crossed his path was to be eliminated on sight.
After hearing the old man’s threat, Ethan sneered. “The Voss family’s Fortune Siphon Amulet has already been destroyed by me. You should know that when a cursed artifact is shattered, its creator cannot escape the consequences. Today is your doomsday.”
Master Harlan Graves sneered with disdain. Although the beggar was technically correct — destroying an artifact bound to someone would trigger backlash on both the user and the maker — he simply didn’t believe this street rat had the power to destroy it.
Then his phone suddenly rang.
Graves glanced at the caller ID, his brows tightening. The moment he answered, his face drained of all color. The phone slipped from his hand and clattered to the ground.
“Master, are you… alright?” Dr. Damian Crowe asked anxiously.
Graves snapped back to reality. His eyes burned with murderous hatred as he stared at Ethan. “You filthy beggar! You actually destroyed my artifact! Good… very good. Now I have even more reason to kill you!”
“You?” Ethan said coldly. “A mere Profound-level cultivator like you dares to act arrogant in front of me? You don’t know the meaning of death.”
BOOM!
A wave of shock hit Graves. This beggar could tell my cultivation level with a single glance? That means his own power is at least one realm higher… Could he already be at Earth-level?
Suddenly he remembered how the young man had also instantly identified the Shadowstar Venom he had used on Serena’s mother. Something is very wrong. This kid is definitely not an ordinary beggar.
“Who the hell are you?” Graves asked in a low, wary voice.
“The one who’s going to send you to the afterlife,” Ethan replied flatly.
Graves flew into a rage. “Fuck! Kid, I’ll have you know I’m a Hall Master of the Tenth Hall in the Shadowveil Order — unmatched in the art of poison! I already poisoned you the moment you appeared!”
The Shadowveil Order was divided into ten halls, modeled after the Ten Halls of Hell.
Ethan simply sneered. “Those pathetic poisoning tricks? You dare show them off in front of me? I’m immune to all poisons.”
“Impossible!” Graves roared. “There’s only one person in this world who is truly immune to all poisons — the Dragon Lord himself, who stands above the clouds!”
Damian Crowe grew impatient. “Master, why are you wasting words on this trash? Just kill him! Even if he isn’t poisoned, with your cultivation you could crush him with one finger!”
Ethan suddenly looked at Graves with a faint, dangerous smile.
Graves stared back. A moment later, his entire body began to tremble violently. His eyes bulged like copper bells and his face turned deathly pale, as if he had seen a ghost.
“You… you… you are…”
Before he could finish, Graves dropped to his knees with a heavy thud and began kowtowing frantically. “I was wrong! I was truly wrong! I beg you, Dragon Lord, please spare this worthless life of mine!”
BOOM!
Damian Crowe’s eyes nearly popped out of his skull. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing — his own master was kneeling and begging before a filthy street rat.
“Master, he’s just a stinking beggar! Why are you afraid of him?!” Damian shouted in disbelief.
“Shut up!” Graves barked.
Ethan looked down at the trembling old man with the same faint smile. “It seems you’ve finally recognized me. You have some skill after all. Unfortunately, you chose to aid evil and harm innocent people. You deserve to die.”
Graves shook like a leaf in a storm, terror gripping his heart completely. He knew exactly who he had offended. This was the Dragon Lord — a man with terrifying backing. Even the Sect Leader of the Shadowveil Order would have to bow his head in front of him.
Damian, however, still didn’t understand. “You’re just a fucking beggar! Stop pretending! Master, hurry up and kill him!”
Graves shot his disciple a razor-sharp glare and instantly made up his mind. “I… I am willing to atone for my sins! I only beg you to spare my worthless life!”
“Atone?” Ethan asked with a cold smile. “And how exactly do you plan to do that?”
Damian couldn’t take it anymore. “Stinking beggar, what kind of poison did you use on my master?! Hand over the antidote right now or I’ll kill you!”
The moment the words left his mouth, Graves lunged forward and slammed Damian to the ground. Before Damian could react, a cold dagger appeared in Graves’ hand.
Slash!
A horrifying scream echoed through the corridor as blood sprayed from Damian’s crotch. Graves had castrated him on the spot.
A few seconds later, Damian fainted from the agony. Graves knelt once more before Ethan as if nothing had happened.
Trembling, he said, “It’s all this trash’s fault! If he hadn’t been obsessed with Serena Blake, I would never have poisoned her mother or done any of those despicable things. I’ve already castrated him as punishment. Can you… can you spare this worthless life of mine?”
Ethan’s expression remained flat. “And what about helping the Voss family forge the Fortune Siphon Amulet?”
“I… I am willing to craft a new protective artifact for Miss Blake! I’ll transfer all the Voss family’s fortune to her!”
Ethan shook his head. “Not enough.”
Graves gritted his teeth. “I’ve made quite a fortune over the years. I’ll give it all to you!”
“Still not enough.”
“Then… then what do you want me to do to earn my life?”
“Die.”
At that single word, Graves collapsed completely, his face ashen.
Ethan spoke indifferently, “It seems you want me to send you off personally. Very well.”
An overwhelming pressure filled the air.
Graves smiled bitterly. “No… no need. I… I will take my own life. I won’t dirty your hands!”
With that, he raised the dagger and plunged it viciously into his own neck.
SPLURT!
Blood sprayed everywhere.
Ethan turned and walked out of the room without another glance.
He was just heading back to look for Serena when his phone rang. It was an unknown number.
“Hello, is this Brother Ethan Blackthorn?” A seductive, honey-sweet voice came through the speaker — the kind of voice that could make a man’s blood run hot.
“Who is this?”
“The number one temptress of Silverton City, Mia Sterling,” the woman said with a flirtatious laugh.
Ethan frowned. He had never heard the name before. “What do you want?”
“To sleep with you.”
Ethan was momentarily stunned, then amused. “We know each other?”
“Not yet… but you definitely know my father.”
“And who is your father?”
“Victor Sterling,” she replied playfully.
Victor Sterling — head of the Sterling Family, the most powerful family in Silverton and a member of the Apex Nine. The Apex Nine was an elite alliance created by Ethan’s fourth master, who controlled the largest financial empire on the continent. Only nine families were allowed in.
So Victor Sterling already knows I’ve arrived in Silverton and sent his daughter to curry favor.
Ethan chuckled inwardly. The method was certainly bold.
“I have things to do right now. I don’t have time to play.”
“Then just a little chat would be fine, right?” Mia purred.
Ethan thought for a moment. “Where are you?”
“Right outside the inpatient building. I’m in the black Mercedes-Benz G-Class.”
“Alright, I’m coming down.”
When Ethan reached the entrance, he spotted the luxury SUV. The rear door opened smoothly.
Two long legs wrapped in sheer black stockings appeared first, followed by a tiny gray micro-skirt that barely covered anything. Even Ethan felt his pulse quicken.
Then the rest of her emerged.
Mia Sterling was breathtaking in the most dangerous way possible. Fox-like eyes, full red lips, and a body that screamed temptation. She was the very definition of a succubus — the kind of woman who made men lose their minds with a single glance.
She gave Ethan a coquettish smile. “Brother Ethan, please get in.”
Under the envious and jealous stares of everyone around, Ethan stepped into the car. Mia slid in right after him and closed the door.
Up close, she was even more intoxicating.
Mia looked him over with open interest. “Did my father send you to me?” Ethan asked directly.
“No. I came because I wanted to,” she said with a seductive smile. “I’ve admired you for a very long time.”
She suddenly rose from her seat, climbed onto Ethan’s lap, wrapped her arms around his neck, and pressed her body against his.
With sultry eyes, she whispered, “Daddy… want to have some fun?”
Ethan was speechless for a second. This girl is even bolder than I expected.
He chuckled. “Let’s skip the fun for now.”
Mia’s eyes immediately turned misty and pitiful. “Brother Ethan, am I not pretty enough?”
“You’re very pretty.”
“Then is my body not hot enough?”
“Any normal man would lose control. Honestly, even I got excited the moment I saw you.”
Mia giggled. “Then why are you rejecting me? I’m so heartbroken~”
She was truly a master temptress — intoxicating when seductive, heartbreakingly lovely when pretending to be sad.
Ethan sighed. “Mia, this is too fast.”
“Ah? Daddy, are you already finished?” she teased.
Ethan gave her a firm slap on her backside. “Cut the nonsense. I prefer a long, drawn-out battle.”
Mia’s smile turned even more wicked. “Then how about we find a quiet place and test that right now?”
“Forget it. Let’s build our relationship properly first,” Ethan said with a smile.
At that moment, a brand-new Bentley sped toward the inpatient entrance. A slick, arrogant-looking young man stepped out.
Serena Blake walked out of the building with a gloomy expression.
Mia, still sitting on Ethan’s lap, smirked. “Serena is in trouble now.”
“What do you mean?”
“That pretty boy is Marcus Blake — Serena’s cousin. The Blake family has been bullying her for years. If he’s here now, it can’t be anything good.” She shifted her hips teasingly. “Oh, and Daddy… your key is poking me.”
“I don’t have any keys,” Ethan said, confused.
Mia’s cheeks instantly flushed bright red as she realized what was actually pressing against her. She leaned in close to his ear and whispered seductively, “Daddy… you’re so naughty.”
Ethan was about to reply when he saw Serena finish talking with Marcus. She looked devastated, eyes red, and turned to walk back inside. Marcus, on the other hand, got back into his shiny new Bentley with a smug grin.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Mia, want to have some real fun?”
Mia giggled. “Daddy, you can’t hold it in anymore?”
Ignoring her teasing, Ethan grinned. “That trash’s car looks brand new.”
“It is. He’s been trying to pursue me, so he bought it to show off.” She leaned closer. “Want to have your way with me right in front of him?”
Ethan gave her another firm slap on the rear.
Mia let out a breathy moan. “Daddy, that hurt!”
“Cut the crap,” Ethan said with a dangerous smile. “I want you to ram his car. Hard.”
BANG!!!
A deafening crash exploded at the entrance of the hospital’s inpatient building.
The front end of the Mercedes G-Wagon was completely wrecked, and the brand-new Bentley behind it had fared even worse — its rear end caved in like a crushed soda can, both back wheels visibly bent.
Marcus Blake’s head slammed into the deployed airbag. The pain was sharp, but rage quickly overpowered it. He shoved the door open and stormed out, ready to murder whoever had just ruined his brand-new car.
The moment he saw the damage, his heart sank. This was my new car! I hadn’t even had it for two days!
Then the G-Wagon’s door opened.
An absolute stunner stepped out — long legs, killer figure, and a face that could stop traffic. Marcus froze mid-rant. He never expected the driver to be Mia Sterling.
My goddess! I can barely even get a glimpse of her normally!
“Mia… you… you hit my car?” he asked, forcing a smile.
Mia tilted her head cutely. “Oh, is this your car? I’m so sorry! My driving isn’t the best, and I couldn’t stop in time. How about I pay for the damages?”
Ethan Blackthorn stepped out of the passenger side, took one look at the scene, and couldn’t stop the grin spreading across his face.
Mia really is a natural-born troublemaker.
“No need, no need!” Marcus waved his hands frantically. “It’s just a car. The Blake family can afford another. The important thing is that you’re okay!”
Even as he said it, his heart was bleeding. He had begged his father for months to buy that Bentley. But for a chance with his goddess, he was willing to swallow the loss.
“Wow, Marcus,” Mia said sweetly, “you’re such a real man. I absolutely love guys like you!”
BOOM!
Marcus felt like his soul was about to float out of his body. His goddess had just praised him!
“Mia, c-can I take you out to dinner tonight?”
“Oh, I’m busy tonight,” she replied with a regretful pout.
“Ah… okay then.”
“Bye, Marcus!”
Mia gave Ethan a quick, sultry wink before sliding back into the G-Wagon. The engine roared, and she sped off, leaving Marcus standing there stunned and alone.
Ethan chuckled and headed back inside the hospital. He spotted Serena at the payment counter, her elegant figure impossible to miss even in the crowded lobby.
He walked up behind her. “What are you doing, dear wife?”
Serena shot him a cold glance. “Perfect timing. We need to talk.”
“What’s up?” Ethan asked with a smile.
She grabbed the receipt and walked toward the seating area in the lobby. “Two things.”
Ethan nodded. “Go ahead.”
“First, my uncle wants us both at the Blake family mansion for dinner tonight.”
So that was what Marcus had come to tell her. No wonder her face had looked so gloomy earlier.
Ethan grinned. “That’s good news!”
“Good news?” Serena snapped. “They obviously want to humiliate us!”
“Don’t worry,” Ethan said confidently. “If anyone tries to humiliate you tonight, I’ll smash their heads in.”
“Hmph. All you do is talk big.”
Even though she sounded dismissive, a tiny flicker of warmth stirred in her chest. She wished Ethan could actually back up his words, but she knew better. He was just a beggar with a big mouth. How could he possibly stand up to the Blake family?
Ethan smiled. “Alright, dear wife. What’s the second thing?”
“Let’s make an agreement.”
“What kind of agreement?” he asked, looking eager.
Serena said seriously, “You already know the only reason I married you was because Madison blackmailed me using my mother and the bar.”
Ethan nodded. “Yeah, I heard the whole thing. I get the part about your mother, but what’s the story with the bar?”
Serena sighed. “The bar is the key to whether I can take back the Blake Corporation.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow. “The Blake Corporation was your father’s?”
“He built it from nothing,” Serena said coldly. “After he died, my uncle schemed with outsiders and stole it from us.”
“That’s shameless,” Ethan said, his expression darkening.
“It is.” Serena continued, “Right now there’s a three-year competition to choose the next head of the Blake Corporation. Every third-generation member has to manage a business. Whoever performs the best becomes the heir.”
“And they gave you the bar,” Ethan guessed.
“Exactly.” Serena’s voice was icy. “The worst possible asset. And they assigned a bar — of all things — to a woman. Their intentions were obvious.”
Ethan laughed lightly. “Your uncle really doesn’t play fair.”
Serena looked at him with slight surprise. She hadn’t expected him to understand the situation so quickly.
“Who set up the competition?” Ethan asked.
“My grandfather,” Serena replied, her expression dimming. “He passed away six months ago.”
“At least the old man had some conscience. But your uncle was the one who assigned you the bar, right?”
“Yes.”
“Got it. So what’s the agreement you want?”
Serena took a deep breath. “The assessment period ends in three months. Once it’s over, no matter what happens, we get a divorce.”
Ethan smiled. “I see. Once the competition is finished, Madison loses her leverage, so you’ll be free to divorce me. But aren’t you worried you might fall in love with me during these three months and won’t want to leave?”
Serena sneered. “Fall in love with you? I’d fall in love with a pig first.”
Ethan’s eyes lit up mischievously. “Oh, so you’re into pigs?”
Serena punched him in the arm. “Since you’re not objecting, I’ll take that as agreement.”
“Actually, Serena, I have a better idea.”
“What?”
“We can get divorced right now,” Ethan said, “but pretend we’re still married in front of everyone else.”
Serena’s heart skipped a beat. That was a much better plan. She would be mentally and physically free, while no one outside would know.
“You’re really willing to divorce me right now?” she asked.
“I am. But I have one condition.”
“What condition?”
“Before we divorce… you have to sleep with me once.”
BOOM!!!
Serena nearly exploded with rage. I almost forgot what a shameless lecher this guy is!
“You bastard! Could you be any more disgusting?!”
Ethan thought for a second and added, “And you have to wear black stockings.”
Serena wanted to bite him to death.
Later, as they drove her mother back to the quiet two-story villa where Serena and Amelia lived, Ethan looked around and muttered, “It’s pretty remote out here.”
Serena replied irritably, “If you don’t like it, don’t stay.”
Ethan shrugged. “Can’t do that. I still have to sleep with my wife.”
Serena was both embarrassed and furious. If her mother weren’t in the car, she might have actually tried to strangle him.
After they arrived, Serena helped her mother inside, then said softly, “Mom, get some rest. I’m going to change.”
Once Serena went upstairs, Amelia turned to Ethan with a heavy expression. “Ethan, I want to talk to you.”
“Let me guess,” Ethan said with a light laugh. “You want me to divorce Serena?”
Amelia nodded. “Child, Serena told me how you two got married. None of this was your fault.”
“You’re very understanding, Mom!” Ethan grinned.
The word “Mom” made Amelia flinch, but she didn’t correct him.
“Ethan, I know you’re a good person. It’s not that I look down on you for having no money, power, or background. But you know Serena’s situation. Ever since her father died, she’s lived every day in pain and fear. What she needs most is someone she can rely on — someone who can make her life easier. I don’t mean to belittle you, but the reality is cruel. You have nothing. Marrying you might feel good for you, but Serena will only suffer more. Do you understand?”
Ethan nodded quietly. The words were harsh, but he could tell Amelia only wanted the best for her daughter.
“So I’m begging you,” Amelia said, voice trembling. “Please divorce her.”
Ethan chuckled. “What if I become as rich as a king and as powerful as an emperor?”
Amelia’s face darkened with displeasure. She clearly thought he was just boasting.
“Ethan, there’s nothing wrong with having nothing,” she said seriously. “What’s terrible is not knowing your own limits and speaking empty fantasies. It doesn’t impress anyone. It only makes you look foolish and frivolous.”
With that, Amelia stood up and went upstairs.
Ethan didn’t follow. He remembered the Blake family dinner and sent a quick message to Mia Sterling.
A short while later, the sound of high heels echoed down the stairs.
Ethan looked up and was momentarily stunned.
Serena had changed into a long, sleek black evening gown that hugged her perfect figure. She looked cold, elegant, and breathtakingly beautiful — like moonlight itself. Her face was so flawless it could steal a man’s soul.
Seeing Ethan staring at her in awe, Serena lifted her chin haughtily. “Am I beautiful?”
Ethan nodded sincerely. “Stunning. Even your worst enemy would have to admit you’re as beautiful as Helen of Troy.”
Serena snorted. “Hmph. I still won’t sleep with you!”
“That’s fine,” Ethan grinned. “You can sleep on me instead.”
Serena felt the urge to bite someone again.
On the way to the Blake family mansion, Serena warned coldly, “During dinner tonight, don’t say anything reckless. I’m afraid my uncle will use it against us.”
Ethan chuckled. “You think tonight is really just a simple family dinner?”
“Isn’t it?” she asked, frowning.
“You’re too naive. If it were just dinner, why would Marcus come all the way to the hospital to deliver the invitation personally?”
Serena’s expression changed. “What do you mean?”
“If I’m not mistaken,” Ethan said calmly, “you’re probably going to be kicked out of the heir competition tonight.”
BOOM.
The words hit Serena like a lightning strike. She glared at him furiously. “What the hell are you talking about?!”
Ethan shrugged. “I hope I’m wrong… but I’m afraid reality is about to slap you in the face.”
“Hmph. My uncle may be ruthless, but the heir competition was set up by my grandfather himself. Even though he’s gone, I don’t believe my uncle would dare violate his final wishes.”
“Let’s hope you’re right,” Ethan said with a bright smile.
Serena snorted. “Of course I’m right. What would a beggar like you know?”
“Serena, I keep telling you — I’m really not a beggar.”
“Whether you are or not doesn’t matter to me. We’re getting divorced in three months anyway.”
Ethan grinned. “What if you fall in love with me by then? Will you still want the divorce?”
“Hmph. I told you — I’d fall in love with a pig before I ever fell in love with you.”
“You never know,” Ethan teased.
Serena shot him a glare and fell silent.
Soon they arrived at the Blake family mansion. Even from the outside it was obvious how massive and luxurious it was compared to Serena’s modest villa.
Serena parked but didn’t get out immediately. She took a deep breath, clearly nervous.
Ethan smiled gently. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here. Like I said — if anyone bullies you tonight, I’ll smash their heads in.”
“You talk big,” Serena muttered. “I’m more worried you’ll be the first one to run away.”
Ethan just chuckled.
The moment they stepped inside, they saw servants everywhere decorating the mansion. The entire villa was brightly lit and buzzing with activity.
“Serena,” Ethan laughed softly, “I’m getting the feeling the Blake family is actually excited to see us.”
To be honest, he already knew why they were going all out. Mia Sterling was coming.
Just then, Marcus Blake appeared with a sneer on his face.
“Serena, is this the beggar you married?”
“Marcus, watch your mouth,” Serena said coldly.
A small warmth spread through Ethan’s chest. Even though Serena disliked him, she still wouldn’t let others insult him freely.
Ethan smiled. “Brother-in-law, what’s with all the decorations? Is this welcome for us?”
Marcus laughed mockingly. “Who do you think you are? You’re not worthy of the Blake family rolling out the red carpet for you. Let me make it clear — the reason we’re decorating is because an honored guest is coming tonight!”
“An honored guest?” Ethan grinned. “We are the honored guests.”
Marcus burst out laughing. With a vicious smile he said, “You really are an idiot. Let me spell it out for you. Tonight, the young lady from Silverton’s most prestigious family — Miss Mia Sterling — is coming to our home.”
“And do you know why she’s coming?” Marcus puffed out his chest. “Because I’m pursuing her. Her visit proves she’s interested in me.”
He turned to Serena with contempt. “Serena, and you still think you can compete with me to become the heir? Dream on!”
Ethan Blackthorn chuckled.
Marcus Blake instantly shot him a furious glare. “You filthy beggar, what the hell are you laughing at?”
“I’m laughing at you for being such a delusional idiot.”
Marcus snorted. “Delusional? I think you’re just jealous.”
Ethan chuckled again, looking at Marcus like he was staring at a clown. “You’re right. I’m insanely jealous of you.”
Marcus immediately broke into a smug, arrogant grin.
Serena Blake suddenly spoke in a cold voice. “Since the young lady of the Sterling Family is coming to visit, can we leave now?”
Marcus sneered with disdain. “Of course. Trash like you two aren’t fit to stay in the Blake family home. Get lost!”
A dangerous glint flashed in Ethan’s eyes. He was about to speak when a commanding voice cut through the air.
“Hold on. I have something to say.”
A man in his fifties walked over. He was short and unimpressive-looking, but his face carried a constant hint of cruelty. His gaze landed directly on Ethan.
Serena said solemnly, “Ethan, this is my uncle. Call him Uncle.”
This was Richard Blake — Serena’s eldest uncle and current head of the Blake family.
Ethan smiled politely. “Hello, Uncle.”
Richard Blake’s expression remained icy. He didn’t even acknowledge the greeting, treating Ethan like he was invisible — just another worthless street rat.
“I was planning to invite you both for dinner,” Richard said coldly, “but the Blake family has important guests arriving tonight, so we won’t keep you.”
Serena breathed a quiet sigh of relief. She had zero desire to stay anyway. But just as she turned to leave, Richard spoke again in an even frostier tone.
“However, Serena, there is something I need to tell you.”
Serena’s heart sank. “Uncle, what is it?”
Richard smiled thinly. “Once a daughter of the Blake family marries, she is no longer eligible to compete for the position of heir. Furthermore, effective immediately, you are expelled from the Blake family.”
The words hit Serena like a hammer. Her beautiful face turned deathly pale, and her body began to tremble with rage. She was so furious she felt like she might explode.
She could have swallowed them using her marriage as an excuse to remove her from the heir competition. But expelling her from the family entirely? Richard’s own daughter, Victoria Blake, was also married — yet no one had ever talked about expelling her. This was clearly a targeted attack meant to cut Serena off completely and destroy any chance she had of reclaiming the Blake Corporation.
How ruthless.
Ethan’s eyes turned cold as well. He hadn’t expected this trash to not only steal Serena’s father’s company but now viciously kick her out of the family too. Still, he stayed quiet. He was waiting for the real show to begin.
Marcus said proudly, “Father, Miss Sterling will be here soon. Let’s go welcome her properly. We can’t let her think the Blake family lacks manners!”
Richard nodded. “Notify everyone. Have all members of the Blake family gather at the entrance to welcome Miss Sterling!”
He shot Serena one last cold glance before hurrying toward the villa entrance.
At some point, Serena’s beautiful peach-blossom eyes had turned red. Ethan knew she was hurting badly — not just heartbroken, but in complete despair.
He said softly, “Don’t be upset. Later tonight, your uncle might end up on his knees begging you.”
Serena knew Ethan was just boasting again, but his words still gave her a tiny sliver of comfort in the middle of her despair. That comfort quickly turned into even deeper pain. If only I had married someone with real power… maybe Richard wouldn’t have dared to do this.
Being expelled from the family hurt. But losing her right to compete for the Blake Corporation — the company her parents had built from nothing — felt like a knife twisting in her chest.
She let out a heavy sigh.
Marcus overheard Ethan’s bold claim and sneered. “You fucking beggar, are you on drugs? My father would kneel and beg Serena? Who the hell do you think you are?”
“Oh, you don’t believe me?” Ethan asked with a cold laugh. “Want to make a bet?”
Marcus roared, “Fuck yeah! Bet what?”
Before Ethan could answer, Serena cut in sternly, “Ethan, shut up! Let’s go!”
This idiot is addicted to bragging. Betting on something like that? He’s going to get himself killed.
“Serena, don’t worry. I’m going to get some payback for you,” Ethan said.
“Hmph, I don’t need it!” Serena snapped irritably.
Ethan was speechless. She still doesn’t believe me at all.
“Yo, getting cold feet?” Marcus sneered.
Serena said coldly, “Ethan, we’re leaving!”
Ethan gave Marcus one last look. “Consider yourself lucky, dog.” He turned and followed Serena outside.
The grand entrance of the Blake villa was already packed with people. Richard Blake stood at the front, leading the entire family. Everyone was dressed in expensive, glamorous clothes, making Ethan’s plain, worn outfit look even shabbier by comparison.
The moment the crowd saw Ethan and Serena, whispers and mockery erupted.
“Is that the beggar Serena married? He really does look like a street rat!”
“Trash like her only deserves trash.”
“I heard this beggar ruined her reputation, so she had no choice but to marry him.”
“If that’s true, expelling her from the family was the right decision.”
The insults kept coming. Ethan didn’t seem bothered at all, but Serena’s face turned deathly pale. She looked like she might collapse at any second. Her beautiful eyes grew even redder as she fought back tears.
These were her own relatives. How could they be so vicious?
She took several deep breaths, refusing to let a single tear fall. She knew that if she cried, their mockery would only get worse.
Just as she was about to get into the car, Ethan stopped her. He smiled and said, “Serena, why don’t we stay and greet Silverton’s most esteemed young lady? There might be a nice surprise.”
“Ethan, please… let’s just go. I’m begging you. Don’t make me suffer any more humiliation, okay?” Serena pleaded, her voice trembling.
