CHAPTER ONE

Ashley didn't really want to be there. But Shane asked her and asked her for so long, so she finally gave in. Again.

"Remember to get dressed up babe,” he reminded her that rainy Friday morning while she was sipping her first cup of coffee in the living room.

Ashley pulled her legs to the couch and moaned on the phone.

"Do you need me to come? I mean, you can do this without me. I have so much work to do, babe.”

"Sweetheart, you know how agents look at musicians when they have their lady with them,” he replied.

"Then borrow such a lady for tonight,” Ashley laughed, but before he could answer, she added."Okay, okay babe. I'll be there. Dressed up, I guess. Don’t worry. Please, don't drink as much as last time, Shane. Julian will be pissed if he has to carry you back to our place again.

"I promise you, dear, I won’t tonight. I’ll text you the address. See you at sevenish. Love you.”

"Love you too, bye.”

Ashley put down the phone and took another sip. She didn't want to go anywhere, preferring to stay on this couch all day and night, but since she promised Shane... Her thoughts were snapped when she heard the bedroom door down the hall slam, as Julian came into the living room.

Her friends were jealous of her living with Julian even though he was gay. He was hot as heck and all Ashley’s friends just want a taste of him but Julian knew how to blow them off politely. Ashley and Julian knew each other since going to college in Boston and came to New York together five years ago. Julian was a part-time model and fitness coach presenter for Manhattan’s local NBC station, while Ashley worked as a freelance photographer, ran a six-figure lifestyle blog, and wrote columns for different magazines. They lived together because it was the cheapest option for living in the Big Apple. In addition, they were close, so much so that Julian comfortably walked around the house shirtless and in boxers. Ashley surely did not mind.

"Shane called already, huh? My God, it’s freakin’ early,” Julian said, taking Ashley’s cup of coffee from her and finishing the rest."I heard you talking on the phone.”

"I didn't want to wake you up, Jules. I’m so sorry...”

"Nah, you didn’t. I was already up.” Julian shook his head while ruffling his hair." Shane couldn’t wait for you to wake up and call him. You said he’s been talking about tonight’s gig for weeks.”

Ashley sighed.

"I'm thirty-two...” Ashley said staring at Shane."—and my boyfriend tells me to remember how to dress. What is this world coming to...”

"I told you before that I don't like him. He’s so arrogant,” Julian said shrugging his shoulders as if it was obvious."After he got drunk at Allison’s party and I had to force him to go home...”

"It was an accident!”

"Yeah, and how did he pour beer on you at your birthday party? Damnit, that was a nice outfit...”

"I know, I know, I know...You already said that.” Ashley sank onto the couch. "My love life is one big mess...”

"Don't say that!” Julian said coming over to embrace Ashley. "For me, you’re the sexiest, smartest girlfriend ever!”

"Then why can't you be my boyfriend, Julian? We’d make a great couple. You already buy me tampons and you see me in underwear more often than Shane and likewise.”

"Hmm...because I like men. Not dicks like Shane.”

Julian laughed.

"But I promise! If I ever consider switching back, you'll be the first.”

"Thanks. Well at least, there’s still some hope.”

Julian then told Ashley that he had a workout session with a new client so he had to hurry.

Julian Collins was just like that. Great stuff for a boyfriend. Tall and well-built, well-groomed and funny. Dark cropped hair with blue eyes, the man that women around the world were looking for just to walk around their apartment in his boxers.

Ashley dragged herself off the couch and headed for her room, intending to start looking for something to wear for the evening.

"Text me if you want to meet up for brunch!” Julian shouted as he closed the front door behind him.

"Okay!”

* * *

Ashley met her ambitious boyfriend Shane about six months earlier at a show Julian just like the one she was going to tonight. A lot of people from different professions, good vibes, interesting conversations, and of course, music and alcohol. Although Ashley never drank much, sometimes in difficult moments, she would overdo it. Her roomie, Julian mentioned that she had a very hard day that day, which is why Shane Reynolds had a chance with her. Because she was drunk.

But Ashley liked Shane. And it was probably the best and worst feeling. She did not know if she loved him even though "I love you" fell from her and his mouth many times.

“He’s an awesome guy,” Ashley whispered to herself pulling another dress from the closet.” he’s just trying to pursue his dreams, this is important to him. But he’s so focused on only that.”

Ashley had just had her third cup of coffee when she realized that she still didn't have an idea what she should wear for Shane’s performance that very evening.

Her Shane dreamed of being a big-time rockstar. He played in small bars, recording and publishing his band’s songs on Youtube, Spotify, and SoundCloud, but it was not their time yet. Tonight, however, Shane was going to play in his biggest venue yet in downtown Brooklyn where music producers often came. It may finally be the break he needed.

"Make sure you don't wear the same black dress. You looked like an Amish lady the last time we went out…” An incoming text came in from Julian who was not optimistic, to say the least.

“Oh, fucking hell!” Ashley replied.

“Wanna meet up for brunch?” Julian texted.

“Nope, I need to find something to wear. Operation: OCCUPIED!”

“LOL!” Julian replied. “I’ll be home soon.”

Two hours later

Ashley’s room looked like a hurricane hit and she was growing more and more desperate. Finally, Julian returned home. He threw his gym bag into the corner and entered Ashley’s room with a pizza and a six-pack of IPAs.

"You look terrible,” he laughed when he saw Ashley sitting on her bed in her cropped top and sweats looking bewildered. Ashley’s hair was one big mess, glasses slipped off her nose, and her eyes indicated that she had given up hope.

"I don’t understand what’s the deal.” Julian sighed brushing some of the clothes off the floor with his foot. "You're a model in the making, and you don’t know how to show it. Oh please help her, God!”

"Hmm, I’m such a mess,” Ashley murmured, reaching for a slice of pizza."You remember in college when Dexter told Susan not to take any clothes from me because I dress like a hippie?”

"Dex is an asshole!”

"Maybe—but he might have been right all along.”

"Those were hard times, my dear! Our lives were just beginning,” Julian laughed, reaching for a beer.”Okay! Let’s start over. Show me what you got to wear in here.”

Friday

The day had been completely rained out. Clouds hung over the city, and even the fact that Julian had finally found something for Ashley to wear did not fill her with much joy. They got out of the Uber a block away from the venue. Julian opened the umbrella for Ashley after she told him she wanted to walk a bit to get used to walking in heels. Ashley then straightened herself and started down the pavement seeing her reflection in the shop windows, admitting that she looked pretty damn good. Julian beforehand had talked her into wearing some black leather pants (the ones Ashley had bought on sale last year and still had on its price tag when he took them out), a black blouse with straps, and a big dark gray sweater that kept falling from her shoulders.

“I look nice, Julian but don't I look like a walking nightgown?

"You look stunning, woman! Just stop it, will you!”

"All right, I’m going to be on my best behavior. I think—” Ashley sighed.

Before they left out, Julian persuaded Ashley to do her hair in curls and put on some makeup.

Now, they were in front of the venue and Ashley was gasping heavily.

"Relax, girl.”

"I’m trying…”

* * *

Ashley showed the bouncer their invitations and they were led inside. The venue had a nice, little, dim atmosphere with many tables and a stage at its rear. Small cubicles on the sides gave privacy to guests if needed, and the dance floor in the middle was the only area that was lit up. There were quite a few people inside as Ashley looked nervously at her Apple Watch. No, I’m not late.

She saw her boyfriend Shane by the stage looking handsome in his denim jacket with his hair pretending to be artistic disorder while he was tuning his guitar."Go ahead, girl. The big Shane is waiting for you,” whispered Julian."I’ll be somewhere in here making new friends.”

"Okay! Don’t be too far away. I might need you.”

“Girl, you’ll be fine! Relax…”

Julian walked off and when Ashley looked back at Shane, he was now talking to a few people including a woman with reddish hair. Ashley walked over calmly making Shane almost jump when he felt her hand on his shoulder.

"Sweetheart, you were about to give me a heart attack,” he said kissing Ashley on the cheek."Wow, you look stunning, baby!”

"Thanks,” Ashley blushed.

"Wanna have a drink?”

Before Ashley could answer, Shane gestured to a waiter, then turned back to his conversers. "And this is my lovely girlfriend and fiancé, Ashley.”

"Hi.” Ashley waved to the group.

"Honey, this is Eileen, the owner of the place. You’ve already heard of Barry and Randy. And this here is Trevor who’s partnering with Eileen on some ventures,” Shane introduced.

"Nice to meet you.” Trevor was the last to shake Ashley’s hand. “Shane here didn't say he had a fiancé.”

Ashley looked confused and started playing with her hair.” I—I’m not his—” she began, but Shane quickly interrupted her grabbing her arm."Honey, won’t you go over there and wait for me? Thanks.”

Trevor watched Ashley who nodded okay but left not looking pleased. Maybe she was smiling, but her eyes screamed HELP.

She sat down and quickly gulped down whatever the waiter brought over to her. Shane then came over and they were talking for a bit. Meanwhile, Trevor smiled, glancing over at Ashley as if she was an interesting specimen. She crossed her legs, and while doing so, Trevor noticed part of her foot tattoo which was a black rose. As Shane talked, Ashley wasn’t paying attention to him, ordering a second drink and looking distraught. Shane, in the meantime, went back to his band so they could rehearse for one final round. Briefly, Trevor and Ashley’s eyes met. Trevor smiled, slightly lifting his beer to acknowledge Ashley’s presence. Ashley’s smiled back and both were feeling each other out.

Suddenly, the lights dimmed and Trevor and his band took the stage.

* * *

“Do you mind if I get closer to the action?” Trevor said approaching Ashley’s table as soon as the show started. Shane and the band performed their hit song, Radical.

Ashley nodded, turning her glass in her hands, sighing to herself that she heard this song for the millionth time.

"Nice place,” Trevor began the conversation, seeing Ashley's eyes wandering around.”Do you come here often?”

"First time,” Ashley replied. "I didn't feel like coming at all.”

"Your fiancé has a show today and you didn't want to come?” Trevor seemed surprised.

Ashley's eyebrows raised and she grinned.

"Shane is not my fiancé,” Ashley countered. ”And I think it scares me to death that you think so. Whatever your name is…”

"Trevor,” he added.”Trevor Baker.”

"Ashley Callahan.”

"Nice to meet you. So by the way, I'm not Shane's fiancée either.”

Ashley laughed as she downed her drink.

"Do you know how this conversation will end?” Ashley waved towards the waiter and gestured for another drink."I will be sitting here the entire time dressed as if I’m on a date, and my rockstar boyfriend won’t even glance at me. By midnight, he’ll be so drunk that my roommate will have to carry him home.”

"I can’t believe a night could end so badly.”

Ashley stared at Trevor lost in his response momentarily.

Trevor could have been a few years older than her. His skin was tanned, and his dark eyes looked at her curiously, along with a seductive smile that wandered on his lips. Trevor had dark, curly hair with light facial hair which only gave him more of an appealing charm.

* * *

"Why do I think I've seen you before?” Ashley said after a long pause.

"Maybe you have in another lifetime? In another dimension?”

The waiter came back putting another drink in front of Ashley which was her fourth. She decided that this would be her last, knowing that a fifth would stop her from going home. She glanced at the stage again as Shane and the band played their hearts out.

"Your girlfriend—I hope she won't be upset that you're sitting here with me tonight?” Ashley joked, now a little tipsy while glancing around.”

"I'm all by myself this evening…”

"That’s too bad,” Ashley slurred, now looking back."We’re two adults sitting here alone drinking, but in fact, we could be somewhere else...”

Trevor laughed.

“Hmm… where would you like to be right now?”

Ashley's eyes sparkled. A sly smile appeared.

"Hmm…I’d like to eat something,” she said resting her head on her hands."And you know what, Trevor? I'm going to do just that.”

“Now? During your boyfriend’s show?”

Ashley started looking for something in her handbag. Moments later, she pulled out her sneakers. Trevor laughed when he saw her toss her heels, put on her sneakers, and quickly down her drink.

"Nice meeting you Trevor. A lady has a craving for something,” Ashley said getting up."Maybe we’ll meet again someday.”

“Well for now, would you mind if I join you?” Trevor asked sarcastically while getting up with Ashley.

Ashley stared.

“Hmm… so are you sure that you can leave your girlfriend behind?”

"Haha—I told you that I’m alone tonight. By the way, it wouldn't be safe for you to walk around these parts of Manhattan alone, at this time of night.

“Perhaps but I must confess you are—Hey, just know that I won't sleep with you tonight?” Ashley slurred tipsy.

"I’m not asking you to do that—” Trevor joked.

“All right! Let’s go get something to eat, my guardian angel for tonight!”

* * *

Nobody noticed Ashley and Trevor leaving as Trevor paid the waiter for their drinks on the way out. Trevor helped Ashley put on her coat at the front entrance as they went out into the cold night’s air. The wind sobered them up pretty quickly as they sighed about the freezing wind. Meanwhile, Ashley was fiddling with her handbag trying to get her high heels which were sticking out to cooperate. She all but forgot about Trevor as well as her roomie, Julian whom she left behind.

"What would you like to eat?” Trevor asked.

"Something unhealthy with a lot of carbs and gluten,” Ashley joked.

Before Trevor could say something else, Ashley grabbed him by the arm and led him down the block. "I know a nice fast food place close by,” she said. "If I have to eat something gross, this place hits the spot.”

* * *

Neon lights reflected off large puddles under their feet as they walked side by side, passing people who, like them, were grateful that the rain did not ruin their nights. Minutes later, they stopped at a restaurant called Bob’s and Ashley stepped inside confidently. They were seated at a table in the middle and Ashley placed their orders.

"Shane won't be upset if he sees you left?” Trevor said as he unbuttoned his sleeves and rolled them up.

“He won't even notice me gone, believe me. That’s not the first time I ran off.”

“So you always running off with a stranger in the middle of his shows?”

"You’re not a stranger. I do know you and so does everyone around at the performance. I saw by the way they were staring at you.”

Trevor didn’t know how but in some strange way, Ashley held his attraction. He only met her tonight, and they were already on what seemed to be their first date at midnight eating burgers and fries.

"One thing that puzzles me,” Ashley said reaching for the basket of fries in their center.”Where do I know you from? Because I’ve seen you before…”

Trevor chuckled as he reached for one.

“Well, let’s start with you telling me more about yourself. Maybe we can figure things out from there…”

* * *

Ashley and Trevor were silent for the most part as they continued eating their meal. It wasn't a bothersome silence, but more natural.

”Let me tell you a secret,” Ashley said.

“I’m a good keeper of secrets.” Trevor chuckled.

"I'm kind of a weirdo.”

“I don’t believe you.” Trevor wiped his hands on the handkerchiefs and pushed his plate away. ”Funny that my girlfriend said the same thing when I first met her.”

"Oh, you have a girlfriend?” Ashley sighed.

Disappointment flooded Ashley’s eyes as she finished her drink and then reached for her handkerchief.

“My God, I wish you would have said something earlier,” Ashley said. ”I wouldn't have brought you here knowing that someone is at home waiting for you. I’m so sorry.”

"Ashley, I did mention that I was alone this evening. I chose to go with you, so you have nothing to apologize for.”

“Hmm, I guess but you know what? I should probably go. It's getting late.”

Before Trevor could object, Ashley had her coat on and her purse in her hand. She walked off to the cashier and paid for their meals.

"Wait a minute please,” Trevor said seeing Ashley visibly upset. Ashley paid him no mind as she left the restaurant, nearly slamming the door in Trevor’s face.

When Trevor got outside, Ashley was staring up at the flashing billboards radiating the street.

"I don’t want the night to end like this,” Trevor said reaching for Ashley’s hand. "You’re such a wonderful woman. I knew that from the moment I laid eyes on you.”

"Doesn't matter now...” Ashley sighed. ”I had a good evening regardless...”

* * *

A moment of silence drew long while Ashley thought about how she had reacted so badly to the news that Trevor had a girlfriend. In all, she should have expected it. Trevor was a hot cute guy who looked like he could have any woman he desired. His cute smile said a whole lot.

"I should be getting back to Shane’s—” Ashley said, staring towards a taxi stand fifty yards away. “The show’s probably done now.”

“Well before you leave me, I’ll need your number,” said Trevor.

Ashley’s face beamed momentarily, but as fast as it had done so, it quickly faded away.

“I think that’s a bad idea,” Ashley stated.

“Well, what if I don’t see you again?”

“Haha, Trevor,” Ashley laughed. ”If you want something, you’ll find out. I think you'll find me. We’re in the same circles somewhat.”

“I wouldn’t know where to start?”

“Trevor, you’re a smart guy. I have to go. Good evening.”

* * *

On the way back to the venue, Ashley thought about her evening from beginning to end whereas Trevor had done the same on his way back to his place.

To Ashley, Trevor was a cool guy, and cool guys were never single. The hottest guy she might have dated could have been Shane but he was so stuck in his dream of being a musician and getting a record label that his hotness was slowly turning icy.

Ashley’s intoxicated state slowly started fading as the taxi whisked through the wet streets of Manhattan. When Ashley passed by the venue and unfortunately, it was closed. She told the driver about a change of plans and to take her home.

Minutes later

Ashley was outside the door of her condo, looking at her phone for the first time in hours seeing that both Shane and Julian had texted and called her.

"Fuck, I should have stayed in tonight,” she blurted as she punched in the keycode for her condo. The door beeped and Ashley sighed believing that it might even be a very long night ahead.

CHAPTER TWO

Monday morning

Monday never sounded good. Although Ashley spent most of the rest of the weekend at home, she felt drained. Julian was happy to hear that she had left Shane's show with someone else, but his face quickly changed expression when she told him that the guy was already seeing someone.

"I didn't mean to pick him up," Ashley said as she put their dirty dishes in the dishwasher. He was a cool guy, I drank a little and Shane was busy doing what he does. I was hungry and decided to get something. Trevor only joined me.

“I wouldn’t worry too much about Shane. He’s happy that the owner invited him and the band again for a show next week, I heard,” Julian said as he packed his things for the day. He glanced at his Apple watch and said, “we have to leave. The Uber is six minutes away.”

“Okay!” sighed Ashley as she pressed the button on the dishwasher.

“By the way, did you finish the column for me?”

"Almost, I’ll work on it as soon as I wrap up my morning’s tasks. It’ll be done by eleven-ish.

"Thanks.”

"No problem. What time do you finish work today?”

“Four. Do you need me to stop at Whole Foods?”

“I think we might need something. I’ll text you by midday.”

Ashley grabbed her things and her coffee mug, and both left out. Their Uber was waiting right outside.

Thirty minutes later

Ashley was sitting at her gig’s cafe on the first floor. As usual, she took a seat by the window and started up her MacBook. She put on her headphones and got to work. Ashley’s father wanted her to become a lawyer or doctor, but that was just a pipe dream. Right now, Ashley was concentrating on the task at hand, sipping her favorite latte and watching others pass by. This view had given Ashley a piece of mind. She could write and ponder for hours in this place. It was quite an interesting life being a freelance blogger, at least right now.

An hour later

Ashley applied the last corrections to Julian’s column and read to herself for the third time.

"Pretty good..." she told herself as she press send via email to Julian.

Ashley then went on to finish up a weekly blog article for one of her client’s fashion magazines and emailed the final draft to the magazine’s editor-in-chief. If the editor likes it, he won’t bother calling me. She waited a few minutes to see if there was a reply back but there was none.

All clear! Yes! Ashley sighed as she closed her laptop. Mentally, she came up with ideas for Julian's upcoming birthday party and thought of what they might need from Whole Foods. Her phone’s buzz canceled her thoughts.

“Hey babe," Shane's voice sounded cheerful. ”What’s up?”

"Working. And you?

“Always working,” he sighed.

Shane and Ashley haven't talked since last Friday, and yet Shane sounded like they had been in touch with each other since.

"I need to ask.”

“Okay…” Ashley sighed.

“Did you like the show?”

“Yes, I did.”

“Well, how come you left…”

"I had a big headache, Shane," Ashley lied. “But I really enjoyed you guys. Are you happy with how it turned out?”

“Yeah, it was okay, babe. ”

“Anything else on your mind?” Ashley said as she stared out of the window.

"Eileen, the owner of the club, got in touch with me earlier today. She said that our performance was well-liked and that she wants us to perform this upcoming Friday.

"Oh, 0kay. Sounds good," Ashley said thinking about Eileen's reddish hair."Of course, you said yes, didn't you? This might be that big chance you’ve been praying for.”

"Yes, I did. Randy and Barry can’t wait either.”

“Great—I really have to—” Ashley said.

“Hmm, I know you’re busy but can you make it on Friday? asked Shane.

"Why?” Ashley acted surprised."What do you need me for?”

"Honey, Eileen said it’ll be a good look. She likes you, honey.”

"Oh, I didn’t know that.”

Ashley doubted Eileen would say such a thing, but Shane insisted that Ashley come with him again. After a few pleases, etc, Ashley finally agreed.

“Are you coming by before Friday?” asked Ashley.

“Baby, I want to but the band and I have to practice, so we can be ready for Friday. We have a new song by the way.”

Ashley sighed and told Shane that someone was on the other line and that she would talk to him later.

Right after the click of the dial tone, Ashley sent a text to Julian. "Pasta, tomatoes, oat milk, chicken thighs, and laundry detergent. Also, make plans to spend Friday evening with me. It’s going to be one hell of a performance!”

“WTH!” Julian responded.

Wednesday

Ashley sent Shane a message that Julian would come with her once again. He didn't answer his phone even when Ashley called minutes later. Finally, a text from Shane appeared on Ashley’s phone Wednesday afternoon. Just a short "Okay!” and nothing else.

"Asshole—" Ashley sighed, responding to another text from her brother stating that he just lost his job at Walmart because he incorrectly lost some inventory. "Stupid idiot. Damnit! My brother can’t do anything right,” Ashley sighed again.

Back to Shane, he had his hands full with work, and right after that, the band's practice for Friday’s show. They had to get it right and right meant 1000% perfect in Shane’s eyes. That's how Ashley visioned her boyfriend; hungry, with days of stubble, a wrinkled Led Zeppelin shirt, holey jeans, and sleepy eyes.

"Do you want to believe that Shane was too busy to hit you back?” Julian said not seeming to care about Ashley’s opinion after work Wednesday early evening. "I think that your boyfriend took a few days off to drink with his band buddies, and play video games when they’re not practicing.”

“Oh my God! You’re hating on Shane,” Ashley said wrapped in her heating blanket on the couch."This is his big opportunity. Give him a break.”

“Someone else needs a break and it’s not Shane,” Julian joked tossing a bag at her, “see what Sarah let me borrow from the studio’s wardrobe.”

Ashley pulled out a black silky dress that looked like it was worth thousands of dollars.

"Wow!" Ashley examined the dress. ”Do you think I can fit in this?”

“Don't eat anything by Friday evening and then try then!” Julian chuckled.

Ashley slapped Julian’s arm and then went to her room. Julian followed behind her and waited outside the door.

“Hey, pretty lady. Don’t oil yourself to fit in it?” Julian joked.

“Oh Julian, you have jokes. Leave a lady to do her thing,” Ashley sighed locking the bathroom door. She further checked the dress which had black lacy sleeves and was quite taut. Its v-neckline had a bit of embroidery and was quite sexy-looking.

"And do a lady look sexy in this, baby?” Ashley asked as she came out of the bathroom.

"If Shane doesn't fuck you in it, he should leave the planet for Mars,” Julian joked.

"I don't know if it would keep it clean enough to return.” Ashley laughed. "Don't you think it’s a bit too short?” Ashley looked down at her knees.

"God! That's the way it should look! If I have to be there with you, this is how you are going to look in this dress. Hot and sexy! Capiche?”

"Okay, Julian!” Ashley sighed.

Friday evening

The evening started as promised and so far it appeared to be exciting. It was not raining for the first time all week and Ashley was glad she would not have to take a heavy coat with her. Julian also looked swell.

"If Shane’s show puts us to sleep, at least we'll get drunk looking like fashion models,” Julian jested as they got out of the Uber in front of the venue.

They got inside as the crowd came and quickly made their way toward the bar. Julian ordered them shots as they scoped out the place.

"A lot of people tonight. I think Shane's bringing in fans,” Julian joked.

"You seem to be his number one hater,” Ashley chuckled, looking around for her boyfriend.

“I’m not,” Julian said as they moved between the guests towards the stage where they saw Eileen, the redheaded owner. “Shane is on the path to stardom.”

"My knight in shining armor!” Ashley kissed Julian on the cheek and took him by his arm. "I'm glad I won't be suffering here alone tonight.”

* * *

"Ashley! Ashley baby, I'm over here!” Shane yelled from the other side of the stage. Randy and Barry were plugging in the last of the instrument cords. Eileen strolled over and embraced Ashley as if they were friends for a very long time.

"I'm glad you came!” Eileen said while looking over Ashley with Julian by her side, "You look really swell tonight!”

"Thank you, Eileen! Thanks to my best friend here, Julian.”

“The dress was perfect for Ashley’s figure,” Julian said winking at Eileen.”I see that you have many people in here today.”

"Yes, it’s definitely packed more than usual. If you would like, I can introduce you to the second band as well. I see Julian that your fitness segment on TV has paid dividends….” Eileen said gazing at Julian’s swelled arms.

“I think we can take a minute to talk about this,” Julian said eying Shane approaching.

Meanwhile, Ashley followed Julian with her eyes as he walked off between the tables with Eileen. Suddenly, she felt Shane grab her waist and kiss her on the cheek.

“Hello sweetie!”

"Shane! You scared the shit out of me.”

"I miss you," Shane said kissing Ashley so hard that she almost spilled her drink. “You look like you just received an Oscar!”

So Shane notices me tonight?

Ashley wanted to believe, but Shane kissed her again and said that he had to attend to a few last-minute matters at the back of the stage. So, Ashley stood there, visibly disappointed and a little pissed with a drink in her hand. She nodded okay.

* * *

A minute later, Ashley came to her senses realizing that once again she was alone. It didn't seem like Julian would come back to join her. She, therefore, went over to the bar and ordered something stronger. Like Julian said earlier,” at least we’ll get drunk looking like fashion models.”

Ashley sat on the stool waiting for her drink and watched the crowd. She observed Julian talking to some young people, then Shane, who was between the backstage and where Eileen was standing. He appeared to be discussing some issues related to the audio quality.

"I found you so you don’t have to give me your number…but just in case, I miss you again,” a male voice whispered in Ashley’s ear.

Ashley turned to tell the man that he had mistaken her for someone else.

"Trevor? What the heck are you doing here?" Ashley said surprisingly. A strangely pleasant feeling enveloped her when she looked at him.

Trevor was well-dressed in all black and Ashley inhaled the cooling smell of his perfume as he embraced her.

“So you’re happy to see me?” he laughed, sitting next to Ashley.

"Of course I am, but…what!”

Trevor beckoned to the waiter and ordered a Scotch.

"You must have heard this already, but you look…a million bucks.”

Ashley blushed.

"Thank you. You look like two million!”

"Really? Thanks!” Trevor laughed. “I shaved tonight to match the look. Just for you.”

"Should I believe you?” Ashley joked. “I hope you are not alone with me this evening.”

"You told me that if I want to meet you, I had to find a way," Trevor said not looking at Ashley. "So, I made a few calls and—”

"You worked your magic behind the scene to arrange a second show for my boyfriend to play here again?” Ashley asked.

Trevor winced.

"Yeah, I have some connections with a few people here and there,” he downplayed, ”so let's get to the business.”

Trevor put his phone on the counter and pointed at it.

“Let’s get your number before you run away again.”

"You think that’s a good idea?" Ashley grabbed his phone. “Your girlfriend won’t be happy. I wouldn't…”

"You’re not trying to sleep with me," Trevor laughed. “So you have nothing to lose.”

Ashley entered her number and handed Trevor back his phone. Meanwhile, Trevor was looking her in the eye as he put his phone to his ear.

"Seriously? Do you think I would lie to you?" Ashley chuckled when she felt her phone vibrate inside her purse.

"It doesn't hurt to check. Does it? Are you here alone again tonight?"

"No, I’m with my roommate, Julian. He’s right over there.” Ashley pointed at him. “And you? Did your girlfriend finally make her grand entrance?”

"Nope. She traveled to Miami for work and will be back next Wednesday.”

Ashley wanted to ask Trevor something else, but the host’s introduction on stage started, so they quickly turned their attention there.

Shane looked great and Ashley felt proud that she could be here to share in his performance. The guests applauded at the end of every song and everyone was carried away by the songs he and his band performed.

A half-hour later

"Has your boyfriend ever written a song about you?" Trevor's voice was voiced once more in her ear, and when Ashley shook her head, Trevor added that Shane should have done so long ago. “I guess it’s time for me to get out the pen and start writing.”

Ashley looked back at Trevor as if he was joking. Meanwhile, Trevor gestured to the waiter to bring them more drinks. After several songs, Shane and the band took a break and the audience resounded in numerous conversations. Ashley and Trevor decided to move to another table after Shane came over and said that the band would go in the back for one more final rehearsal.

“Okay honey, you’re doing great!” Ashley applauded.

Shane kissed her on the cheek and patted Trevor’s back. “Take care of my princess here.”

“No problem Shane. She’s in good hands.”

After Shane left, Trevor excused himself to use the bathroom. Julian came up from behind Ashley and whispered something into her ear.

"Has that smooth-looking guy made his move on you yet?”

Ashley choked on her drink and looked back, at who was unexpectedly behind her. Julian was already a bit drunk as he slumped in the seat beside her which was Trevor’s.

“What a surprise! My mystery roomie/bestie/future husband...” Ashley chuckled.

Quickly returning, Trevor looked at the man who was now sitting next to Ashley. His face showed that he seemed surprised that he had the nerve to be sitting in his seat.

"I didn't think the man who would be in this seat would be you, buddy!" Julian slurred." “Shane, Shane, Shane! Where's the big man, Shane? Someone is trying to take his hot girlfriend!”

“Oh my God, Julian! Shush! How much did you have to drink?" Ashley sighed. “I’m not carrying you home tonight.”

“Didn’t I— carry you like a bride—a few—” Julian slurred then turned to extend his hand out to Trevor, “Julian Collins. I’m Ashley’s dormmate/roommate/soon-to-be-fuckmate...”

“Oh my God! Watch your language!” Ashley sighed.

"Trevor Coleman," Trevor shook his hand.

“Ashley told me about you! So you’re the big man who is sweeping my princess off her feet, huh?” Julian slurred.

Ashley stepped on Julian’s foot under the table and he understood what that meant. He sulked up the moment and stopped blurting this and that as he reached for Ashley’s bottle of water on the table and gulped it down. Trevor was amused at how the whole situation was playing out.

After a moment of sulking, Ashley began telling Trevor about a trip that Julian and she had taken together last year. Ashley's eyes glistened as she talked. Then, she excused herself to go to the toilet. When she came back, she had her high heels in her hands.

"Julian—I’m hungry, roomie...”

“I know that cue,” Julian said laughing and Trevor knew it as well.

Ashley didn't have to say it again. Trevor quickly paid for their drinks, and then each of them slipped out unnoticed.

* * *

It was quite cold outside, and Ashley had started shivering. She glanced at the boys who had taken out their cigarettes and were flickering with Julian's lighter. Despite the late hour, the streets were full of people. Ashley pulled a hair band out of her purse and tied her hair in a bun while looking through the shop window next to the venue.

"Guys! I'm hungry! Please hurry, it’s freezing out here!”

They turned their attention to Ashley, finishing their cigarettes. Trevor took off his jacket and handed it to Ashley.

"God, you're freezing!” he sighed touching her hand. “Hurry and put this on.”

Ashley put on Trevor’s jacket which smelled of him. She didn't think long about the manly aroma, because her stomach was yelling feed me. They started walking, not even wondering where they would go to eat.

The boys started talking about sports, cars, and other man stuff as Ashley hastened in front of them a little to avoid being part of the conversation. She still had a slight buzz as her legs told her that they were carrying her toward the closest pizza place. Yes, Ashley wanted a pizza. She wanted those fattening calories she would regret a first thing in the morning. She did so because she knew that the boys would not object. They were busy talking about men's stuff...

* * *

It was around one in the morning when Julian, Ashley, and Trevor began noticing that the restaurants were closed or not serving anyone anymore. Julian called up an Uber and Ashley joined in sharing a cigarette with them while they waited for the ride.

"If Shane asks tomorrow…” Trevor muttered, glancing at Ashley and then at Julian. “We need to agree on a common alibi.”

"I don't want to think about him right now,” Ashley said taking off Trevor's jacket and handing it back to him.”Thank you. I hope that my roommate won’t scare you away.”

“Oh, you’ll need a lot more to get me to go away,” Trevor laughed flirtatiously at Ashley. “There’s your ride!” He pointed to a car coming.

Ashley hugged Trevor goodnight, and then Julian shook his hand apologizing for his behavior.

“No worry, pal! Just watch over Ashley and I think she’ll appreciate it.”

Ashley and Julian climbed inside the Uber. Minutes later, Ashley felt a vibration deep inside her purse. She reached inside for her phone, wondering who could be texting her at this hour. Julian was nodding off right beside her.

On the screen, she saw a text from an unknown number: "You looked good tonight. Sleep heavenly.”

Ashley sighed laying her head next to Julian’s as the car sped through the dark streets.

CHAPTER THREE

The following morning

The sound of the coffee machine brewing downstairs woke up Ashley. She hid deeper under the quilt trying to catch the last moments of sweet sleep while Julian was a bit merciless, slamming the front door shut. He always went to the gym on Sundays with his coworkers. Most of the time, Julian and Ashley spent Saturday nights on the couch alternately napping and watching indie movies on Netflix. Sunday was no exception when Julian returned from the gym.

When the blissful sleep overwhelmed Ashley again, she heard her phone buzz. Ashley moaned and without opening her eyes reached out to get her phone on her nightstand. First, she glanced at the time - 10.14 am. Then she looked at her message notifications hoping that maybe Shane decided to tell her for once that he had a nice Sunday dinner planned for them. Surprisingly, the message she saw was from Trevor.

She put on her reading glasses and opened them. It was brief, as if the person didn't know what he wanted to write, but wanted something.

"Good morning. What are you doing?"

Ashley replied:

“Home alone in bed."

"Is that an invitation?”

And after a non-response from Ashley, Trevor shot off another text:

“Just kidding!"

Ashley smiled and rolled on her stomach.

"That's a shame,” she texted back.

"Thanks to you, I just spilled my cup of coffee. I hope you’re proud."

"Very proud. LOL.”

“Next I should ask what are you wearing this morning.”

A moment of silence and Trevor was sure Ashley wouldn't reply. Trevor went too far. He started wiping coffee from the kitchen counter thinking about his mistake when his phone vibrated again.

"And I should write that you should check for yourself...." Trevor read, but before he could reply, he received another message.

"But you know perfectly well that I will not, because I have a boyfriend and you have a girlfriend, so…how are you this morning, Mr. Trevor?"

Trevor responded:

“Well. I was wondering if you would like to go for a walk perhaps to buy me another cup of coffee. It’s beautiful outside.”

Ashley went over to the windows and opened the curtains. The sunshine blinded her momentarily. It wasn’t Shane asking her out but Trevor, this is so freakin’ odd, thought Ashley.

“Hmm... Sounds good. I'm not getting dressed up, it’s Sunday. I hope you don’t have an issue with that.”

"You can walk outside in your underwear and I’ll still be by your side. Text me your address and I'll be by to get you in forty-five minutes..”

“Okay.”

* * *

Ashley got up and took a quick shower wondering if she was going to be okay hanging out with Trevor instead of her boyfriend, Shane. By the time she got dressed, she concluded that coffee and a walk around Central Park did not oblige any commitments. Ashley came down the stairs wearing a pair of black PINK sweatpants, a black hoodie, and a black Yankees cap. Minutes later, Trevor showed up holding the door for Ashley to get inside the Uber.

"Nice to see you," Ashley said as Trevor hugged her.

"I'm sorry!" Trevor laughed. “But without makeup, you look...”

“A mess?”

"No, I mean—”

“Like one of those zombies from the Walking Dead, you meant?”

"No! Absolutely not! I wanted to say that you look much, younger.”

“Oh, so I look like an old woman when I’m wearing makeup?”

Trevor sighed, trying to find a way out of his awkward assessment. Then he saw Ashley crack a smile.

“Oh you’re joking?” sighed Trevor.

“Gotcha,” Ashley chuckled. “You should have seen the look on your face. You looked like you ate a barf burger.”

Trevor rubbed his chin and laughed.

"You’re becoming toxic for my health, you know?" Trevor said gazing into Ashley’s eyes.

“That can be a problem," Ashley said brushing her strands of hair off her face.

Ashley did look like a hot mess. Yet, she didn’t care. It was Sunday for God’s sake. She was going to Central Park to grab some coffee and that was it.

Minutes later

They were outside at Starbucks, having already e-ordered their cups, and they started walking until they found a bench to sit down and talk. Ashley faced Trevor cross-legged, who looked much more ready for the day than she was. He had on dark gray jeans and a white Givenchy sweatshirt. Noticeably, a few days of stubble looked good on Trevor’s face.

"Shane called you yet?” Trevor sipped his Joe.

Ashley shook her head and sighed before answering.

“I haven’t heard from him. He’ll probably text me around Tuesday," she said. “That's how it is with us.”

“That’s weird. I don't want to get in you two guys’ business, but...”

“You did by asking,” Ashley laughed thinking that maybe she should be mad at Trevor now. “Sometimes, I think Julian is right. I should have left Shane a long time ago. But you know, I'm also guilty...”

Trevor observed Ashley’s posture as she stared into his eyes. After a long pause, Ashley snapped out of what she was thinking about and finished her thoughts.

"I shouldn't have left, but I’ve done that twice now. I should be more forgiving, I guess...” Ashley stared at some children playing with the dog in the grass. Trevor felt that she was struggling with something, but didn't know what exactly.

“You think he’s messing around, huh with—Eileen?”

Ashley looked at Trevor sadly. “Maybe. Who knows?”

She slowly sipped her coffee savoring the dark roast’s aroma. Trevor had just told her something that she had thought about before, but it was just that. When she came to Eileen’s venue last week, she did notice her hands on her man’s back. The same this week and Ashley thought innocently of the gesture. Now Shane has been gaslighting Ashley ever since saying that he was at Eileen’s establishment practicing. It wouldn’t be farfetched if Shane did find Eileen attractive. Ashley felt that their relationship was slowly sailing off in the sunset. With Shane’s stubbornness about being this big rockstar, there was hardly a way to salvage what they once had. In retrospect, Ashley didn't want to even try to salvage what was left. Shane’s going to be Shane and he’s going to do him, she told herself. Maybe it's time to start doing me.

* * *

"You are cuter than that red-headed Black Widow of a boss Eileen," Trevor joked the first thing that came to his mind. He saw that made Ashley’s mood brighten.

Ashley grinned.

"Even when I look like the big zombie on a Sunday morning?”

"Such a zombie can scare me every morning.”

Ashley looked at Trevor and for a moment thought that he was a nice-looking guy. So far, he seemed honest and Ashley appreciated that he had thought about Shane and Eileen. She already suspected something, but she needed to hear it from someone else. And just like that, Trevor just tossed out the accusation. Now, Ashley could do what she should have done a long time ago - dump Shane. She fake-smiled as Trevor resumed talking.

"What do you do, Ashley?" Trevor asked taking Ashley out of her daydreams.

"Just exist, I guess…”

Trevor chuckled, “Okay…you’re human, we’re human, right?”

Ashley chuckled. “Haha, real funny. Hmm…I write fashion columns, blogs, articles, and sometimes I do a bit of photo shooting on the side…” “My dad wanted me to become a doctor or a lawyer, but that didn't work out. I loved to express myself by writing. You know... stories, poems, and stuff; things that we can hide in a drawer because we don’t dare to show them to anyone.

“I see. Tell me about Julian?”

"Oh, him,” Ashley smiled at the mention of someone else. “I met Jules in college. We were both…just the same as we are now. We get along great, listen to the same music, like the same movies, and are non-judgmental. Besides, living in Manhattan with him is safer for me. We both are from Boston.

"You know when people look at you two, they may think that you are a—” Trevor shifted to face Ashley.

"I know!" Ashley laughed. “Jules is like my big brother. We have some bonds that we share that most people don’t see. But I'm not in his special circle of interests.”

"I could be one in that special circle of yours, I believe.”

Ashley raised an eyebrow as if waiting for Trevor to go on and say: "I'm kidding!" but he didn’t add anything. Ashley simply ignored his flirting.

"I could close my eyes in this park right now and fall asleep. My imagination would run wild,” Ashley continued. “It would take me a long time to wake up, maybe a day or two…”

"I like how you visualize things,” Trevor added.

"Thank you. You're not afraid of me yet, that's a good sign. Let’s take a stroll around the park.”

“As you wish!”

* * *

They threw their cups in a nearby trash bin and walked slowly along the gravel path. More and more people came out to take advantage of the beautiful spring weather making the park fuller. Trevor and Ashley went down a more shady and private path to be able to talk freely. Trevor, in the meantime, was talking to Ashley about himself, where he came from, what he does for a living, what his workday looks like, and Ashley... she listened carefully. She only spoke to ask something, and her questions were spot on. Ashley then felt the urge to get rid of the small talk.

"You have a very interesting life, Trevor,” Ashley said. ”I have a little secret, I’ll share with you...”

“Hmm...sounds exciting.”

“So, I mostly write at home in my underwear. I don't know if I could look casual every day.”

“That’s one helluva secret!” Trevor laughed.

“Sorry for being so blunt. The coffee has my brain wired.”

“No apologies needed.”

"Now back to today's regularly scheduled program." Ashley shook her head. "I have another question."

"Shoot away!" said Trevor.

“How does your girlfriend put up with your work? It's not your typical 9-to-5.”

“She deals with it quite well.” Trevor scratched his neck and combed his hair with his fingers. “She has a similar job schedule which requires lots of travel, so she knows better than most how to adapt.”

“How long have you two been together?”

“About three years and some change.”

“Hmm... now that sounds serious...”

Trevor did not add anything to the conversation as he miscalculated Ashley’s walking direction as she suddenly deviated from the path. She strolled through a garden to take shade under a tree. The sun rays that fell on her face added to her radiance. Trevor caught up to her and sat down with Ashley in silence briefly.

"What’s on your mind?" Trevor asked when Ashley took off her sunglasses and rubbed her eyes.

Ashley sighed as if suddenly she would cry, but when she spoke her voice was steady and calm.

"I'm thinking about what I must do. I’m tired of not feeling so damn empty.” She put back on her sunglasses and smiled. ”I should be angry, I know. I should be upset, but it’s exhausting. I should have known a long time ago that I and Shane didn’t make sense, but I clung onto the idea hoping that everything would change.”

Trevor didn't know what to say, but Ashley didn't wait for his good ole’ advice. She had to spit everything out, and Trevor was just there as a friend. He was different than Julian or anyone else she would confide in. Trevor seemed impartial and sincere.

"I think I'm a little jealous of you..." Ashley confessed.

“Jealous of me?”

"What you have. Three years in. Often, couples decide to get engaged and have dreams of starting a family around that time. I guess I failed in this regard...”

"What are you saying? You’re perfectly okay. You have a good job, look great, and got it going on...”

"I think you know this feeling,” Ashley sighed, smiling as if she remembered something wonderful that happened in the past. ”You meet someone and after that, you know that it's worth risking everything for. It's worth jumping into the ocean and swimming forever. This person will break your heart some days but we will be the happiest couple on Earth for most of them. I envy what you have Trevor. I do...”

There was a long moment of silence and Trevor didn't feel comfortable disturbing Ashley's peace.

"I ruined your Sunday..." Ashley said.

"No, you didn't! Sorry about Shane and—”

"Don't be! You wanted this to happen,” Ashley insisted on saying while tugging his arm. ”I appreciate you thinking about me.”

Ashley was dead wrong. No, Trevor didn't blurt Eileen’s name to get her or maybe he did. Of course, he thought what Shane was doing was wrong not giving Ashley any attention, but deep down inside Trevor knew that it was a bit selfish of him to jump in the mix. This woman was just hanging on by a thread.

“I’d like some ice cream, would you like to join me?”

Ashley’s voice pulled Trevor out of his thoughts. Her eyes regained their former glow as if she had already arranged everything in her mind as she smiled at him.

"What a beautiful day! Come on Trevor, don't make a woman beg!”

She quickly got up and stuck out her hand. Trevor grabbed it and allowed himself to hold it for a long moment.

Ashley opened the door and now Trevor has the option to either enter or back away.

* * *

It was a weird time for Julian Collins. When he came home from the gym on Sunday, Ashley wasn't there. Usually, she would be watching something on Netflix while looking over her emails. Meanwhile, she came home in the afternoon with a big smile on her face and a piece of cheesecake in her hand, which she brought as a gift for him. Julian didn't ask about her whereabouts or anything. He knew that she had certainly not been with Shane and didn't want to spoil her day with questions that she might feel comfortable answering.

Monday Morning

They got up full of energy to start the week off. Ashley had the coffee brewing and the first thing Julian saw was Ashley in the mirror putting on lipstick. It was a good sign, he told himself.

Tuesday Evening

The next day got a little strange but late. It began when Julian smelled cake at the door when he returned home from work and heard the sound of a vacuum cleaner. Ashley was in a strange amok, her eyes were shining, and Julian suspected she had a few drinks seeing a bottle of Vodka on the kitchen counter. The apartment was cleaned, dinner was prepared, and Ashley told Julian she was just about finished with their laundry.

"Something happened here?” Julian asked uncertainly, after making himself a turkey sandwich and sitting on the kitchen counter.

“No, not really. Why?” Ashley asked shaking restlessly around him. “Okay, okay—“ Ashley slurred. “Fucking yes...I finally broke up with Shane.”

"Ooooo—kay…” Julian sighed. He didn’t know how he should react. Maybe with it's going to be all right? He then said, “My God! Woman, you seem so full of energy. Slow the heck down.”

"I feel that I have a nervous breakdown coming on.” Ashley sighed. “I’m on the edge. I know I did it right, but…”

“Take a deep breath and exhale, girl.” Julian walked over to Ashley and hugged her.

“Don’t mind me if you see me acting a little weird over the next few days.”

“No, Ashley. It’s going to be all right. I need you to calm down.” Julian had Ashley in one arm and his sandwich in the other. “Did you get a chance to start on the chicken?”

“Yes! And your favorite cake too.” Ashley sighed nearing coming to tears. “Julian—“

“Don’t worry! I’m here,” sighed Julian.

Ashley started crying her eyes out.

“It’ll be okay! I’m here…”

“I know Julian, I know…”

“Let’s eat and chill out,” suggested Julian.

“Yeah! I’m glad you’re home.”

* * *

The same weekly weirdness could be implied for Trevor as Ashley gave no sign of life for nearly a week. She didn't answer his texts or his voicemails. It was like Ashley suddenly disappeared from the planet. He read and analyzed their last conversation in every way possible and still didn’t think that he said anything detrimental. Somehow in the back of his mind, Trevor knew that their discussion about Shane and Eileen was a dealbreaker. Would it be so?

The following Sunday

Now, Ashley finally answered Trevor’s call and agreed to meet him for coffee. The day turned out to be a day of meals, starting with brunch and dinner. As well, the two didn't talk about Shane, but Ashley was a lot more open in talking about everything else.

They jumped from one subject to the next as if they wanted to make up for the lost time they never had. Ashley was honest about what she was like, laughing out loud and not pretending to be someone she wasn't. With each passing minute, Trevor had the feeling that he was more and more in love with Ashley’s vivid personality. In his world of business, people often smiled and said what they wanted to be heard, but their realities were far from happiness. Ashley was was uniquely different.

Monday

Trevor and Ashley texted almost all day exchanging short insights about their day out on Sunday. When Ashley asked Trevor what he was doing, he sent her a backstage photo from an interview he had earlier in the day. Seconds later, he received a photo from the cafe where Ashley was working today, She had a large cup of coffee, a slice of fruit cake, her white MacBook, and matching white Beats headphones.

"I thought you only enjoy writing at home in your underwear. Next time I'm counting on such a picture!” Trevor texted, holding his breath.

Maybe I went too far again?

"You can dream all you like,” Ashley responded. As she was doing so, one of her clients called her. She texted Trevor back: “I’ll talk to you later. I have a client on the other line. Have a good day! Xoxo.”

“You too, Ashley!”

At Trevor’s place

Melinda, Trevor’s girlfriend was focused solely on catching up on her work. She took a seat by the couple’s living room side window (suitcase still by her from her latest travel), meticulously replying to the emails that had been in her inbox since she had left Dallas. From the moment Melinda came home, she and Trevor agreed to talk to each other once it was time for dinner. Without disturbing his girlfriend, Trevor snuck into the bedroom, closed the door behind him, and secretly called Julian. When he heard Julian’s voice on the other end, he told him to relay a message to Ashley. Now, only Julian could do that for him since Melinda was back in town.

CHAPTER FOUR

A few days later…

Trevor saw Ashley in the dim light as she stood alone in front of the picture of a beautiful mountain landscape portrait. Her head was slightly tilted, and dark hair fell on her back. In hand, she held a glass of wine but seemed absorbed in her thoughts not sensing the crowd of people around her.

At the front entrance, Trevor greeted the host of the art exhibition. There were many photos from Scotland and Trevor didn't think he would spend a Saturday evening in such a place. After a few exchanged words, he started walking towards Ashley. She was like a sculpture herself; long slim legs hidden in tight jeans and a thin gray sweater with a silver thread that fell from her shoulder revealing one of her tattoos. He examined her closely as he dared to approach.

"A penny for your thoughts.”

Ashley jerked but after hearing Trevor, she smiled.

"Don't waste a dime on me,” she replied – It's nice to see you again, Mr. Trevor.

"Hello, pretty.”

Trevor hugged Ashley, but her presence seemed distant. It was like she was still just floating.

"What are you doing here? Were you invited?" Ashley asked pointing at the picture behind her.

“That’s one reason. You didn't reply to my messages…”

"I was a little busy. Please, forgive me," Ashley said, brushing her hair behind her ear.

"Don't worry. I called Julian and he said I would find you here. So, here I am.”

"You don't give up easily, Mr. Man…” Ashley sighed, moving slowly towards the next painting – So, I guess Julian has already told you the big news…”

“Yeah, he did.” Trevor strolled next to her. “He also told me you arranged Shane’s socks in color. I have to say that I’m impressed! If you need any other drawers, mine are available.”

“Haha, I’ll think about that when I’m done with you,” Ashley laughed feeling the impression that the muscles of her face were slowly remembering what it was like to smile again.

“How do you feel now? Are you a little better?”

"Yes, I feel great. Answered a few emails, cleaned the apartment, did some Yoga, and chilled out. Isn’t your girlfriend back in town?”

Ashley said glancing around the gallery, but quickly she looked back at Trevor. His eyes watched her closely, and she felt as if she was lost in their depths.

“She went out with a few of her friends from work to dinner. A woman's way out of the house.” Trevor laughed. “And since we’re alone and together, I would like to show you around?”

“I’d like that.”

They walked from portrait to portrait, stopping now and then. Ashley saw every detail as if she were imagining herself inside it.

She told Trevor that she had always dreamed of going to Scotland. Rain, mud, or sleet wouldn’t stop her. She has even bought a few travel guides in the country just in case. As Ashley was speaking, Trevor wondered if he should ask her about how she and Shane broke up. Anyways, they went around the exhibition multiple times before they finally decided to leave.

* * *

Trevor convinced Ashley to have a drink at the pub near the gallery. As promised, they were supposed to have only one drink, but after their second, Ashley heard one of Aerosmith’s most famous songs, 'Cryin'.

"Oh my God! I love this song!" Ashley said, clutching Trevor's arm.

“Let’s dance!” Trevor said.

"I'm a really bad dancer,” Ashley moaned, but Trevor didn't care. He pulled Ashley onto the bar’s dance floor.

Ashley synced with Trevor’s movements, humming the lyrics under her breath while at the same time becoming more and more lost in the moment. In the second stanza, Ashley released her hand and folded her arms behind Trevor’s neck. He could smell her faint scent of perfume as his hands wandered downwards without crossing a certain border. Ashley was dreamy, liberated, and giving into the moment while Trevor had a strong urge to seduce her and could hardly resist his inner self.

* * *

Ashley's eyes shone incredibly as they left the bar, laughing with each other. Unknowingly, Trevor grabbed her hand and offered to ride with her home as he pulled up the Uber app on his phone. Minutes later, the Uber popped up but Ashley told the driver to pull a few streets away saying it was such a beautiful night to walk around a bit. The streets were calm and quiet, and the air was pleasantly cool.

"Remember when you said that sometimes it's worth jumping for someone into the ocean and taking a chance with?”

Trevor's voice was calm, but Ashley knew that he wasn't calm inside. They were getting closer to her place and their conversations were getting less frequent. Ashley looked at him, trying to figure out what point he was trying to make.

"I remember," Ashley said grinning – Were you inspired by all of this?”

"I think so," he murmured.

They reached the front door of Ashley’s condo and Ashley was trying to dig out her keys from her purse. Trevor stood by her side and put his hands on her shoulder.

"I was thinking about you since we last saw each other…”

Ashley opened the door, looking back. Trevor’s eyes were different, a little bit darker. She couldn't figure out what he was getting at, so all she said was “I was a little busy. I had to sort things out. Sorry…”

Ashley thought it sounded too dramatic because Trevor came a little closer.

"You have nothing to apologize for," Trevor said. “I should be the one.”

"Why would you need to apologize?" Ashley said caught off guard by Trevor’s insistence.

He didn't do anything to offend her.

"For what I'm about to do now.”

Trevor didn't kiss her gently, though maybe he should have. He saw the surprise in Ashley’s eyes when his help came in so fast that she had no chance to back away. He felt her lips parted in shock and he took advantage of it without reservations. Ashley’s taste resembled honey as he kissed her so deeply that she nearly fainted. Trevor’s tongue wandered in her mouth, as Ashley felt bemused by the taste of whiskey. Ashley’s heart wanted to jump free from her chest and moments later, she broke the kiss to catch her breath.

"I've dreamed about this for so many nights…” Trevor sighed, placing his forehead on Ashley’s.

“We can't do this,” she sighed, but Trevor silenced her kissing her again, this time more delicately.”We can’t—“ Ashley repeated. “Trevor, please...” She looked at him longly that Trevor thought he scared her off. Ashley, however, touched his lips with her finger and spoke words that brutally brought him back down to Earth.

"Trevor, you’re seeing another woman. She’s waiting for you at home... And I... I think we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves. Don’t regret doing this.”

"What if she is no longer here?” Trevor stated.

"But she is. And I think you should go home to her right now.”

"You're being so cruel…”

"Not just me, sir.”

Trevor stared at Ashley so intensely that for a second she considered giving in, but she knew she could not. Trevor had to go now before they got into more trouble.

"I think I'll leave,” he sighed going down the steps.

"That’s better, I think.”

"See you soon.”

Ashley smiled weakly. She waited until Trevor disappeared around the corner and silently sank and sat on her cold doorstep.

Minutes later, Ashley entered inside her place, carefully listening to her footsteps echoing through the sleeping downstairs. As she had done so, her phone vibrated. She looked at the screen and gasped.

"I taste you on my lips…Sorry for being a dick tonight.”

After the weekend

Ashley should be upset at Trevor. But she wasn't. She should feel used somehow, but she was playing the kiss back in her head throughout the morning. Various scenarios popped up, both the craziest thoughts and those in which she tells Trevor that they can’t see each other again. Maybe she won't have to tell him? Maybe he would conclude that what they did was just a mere accident and they should go about their separate ways. Maybe right now Trevor was in bed with his beloved girlfriend and didn't think twice about what happened last evening.

Ashley was moping around her place all week and Julian knew that something was wrong, but he didn't have the balls to ask. It wasn't until a week later - Monday morning that he found out what had taken place. Ashley was uttering words at such a pace that Julian could barely keep up.

"Well, I knew right away that when I told him about you being at the exhibition. he didn't mean pictures," Julian said when Ashley concluded running out of breath. “What would you like for me to say?

"Say I did something right," Ashley pouted. “Tell me that what I did was the right thing.”

“Okay, maybe you did the right thing, Ashley.” Julian sighed.

“That sounds encouraging…” Ashley gasped.

“I’m not sure that’s it the right time for you to get in head over heels for the newcomer Trevor. I don't want to sound rude, but Shane has never tried to put in such work as this guy! Are you sure he’s even real?”

“Oh, he’s real and really in a relationship!”

“Oh shit! Oh shit!” Julian uttered. “This is so bad!”

“I know, I know. I don’t think I can do this!”

“This is weird. You sound so infatuated with him. You must be?”

Ashley looked at Julian, stressed beyond words. It was Trevor's fault! she told herself. Trevor confused her with his texts, kind words, and that deep kiss... Now, she couldn’t have him even if she wanted him.

Monday evening

Trevor hasn't written Ashley since Friday. It's like he disappeared off the face of the Earth. Ashley kept telling herself that he was busy with work, Melinda, and any excuse she could come up with in her head. Whatever the reason that was keeping Trevor from calling Ashley, she felt lonely without him...

CHAPTER FIVE

Tuesday morning

Ashley was sipping on a glass of hot apple cider and glancing at her notebook, swiping her hair from her face that fell over her eye.

"I think this column should appear in May’s edition. Do you think you’ll have it ready by April 15th?” Ashley’s best friend, Allison asked her.

Ashley looked over her notes. "Yes, it’ll be ready by then. Can you give me a hand in terms of the number of words you want exactly?”

"Please, make it at least two pages and add a few photos in there to spice it up?”

“Don’t worry, I got you.”

Allison clapped her hands. ”Are you sure?”

“Yup!”

“You’re the best!”

"I have all the time in the world now that I don’t have commitments nowadays.”

Allison closed her notebook and looked at Ashley. They had known each other for nearly six years, Ashley wrote over thirty columns for Allison’s most popular magazine.

“Oh, guess what? I saw Julian coming from the gym…”

“Oh yeah…”

“Yup... He told me that some brunette had finished her cup of coffee...”

Ashley chuckled. “What the heck does that even mean?”

“I think he was trying to say that you and Shane are no longer a—”

"Oh, that's old news. Nothing to talk about there,” Ashley waved. “I’m just focused on work nowadays. By the way, are you coming to Julian's birthday party this Friday?”

"I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to get loose!”Allison laughed. Maybe I can finally hook up with someone nice and bi—“

Ashley and Allison erupted in laughter.

“If this keeps going on, soon we’ll all be one big surrogate family,” sighed Ashley.

Allison shoved Ashley and told her to knock it off.

"We're a young girl! Come on! We’ll have a good time. Better than being alone in your underwear on a Friday night watching porn,” Allison joked.

"Oh, I’d love that! I don't need any more troubles from these so-called alphas.”

“Girl—“ Allison's phone interrupted them. She told Ashley that she had to take the call gesturing to the other room.

Ashley had her pen on the side of her head, staring at the flashing cursor on her Macbook. Meanwhile, Allison came back three minutes later and told Ashley she had to rush out. They embraced each other and Ashley then let her out. Once her door was closed, Ashley got back to work, coming up with an interesting series of columns that she knew would take a lot of time. Her phone then buzzed when it was time for her to almost take a break.

“Knock, knock…”

A text from Trevor.

"Who's there?" Ashley texted back.

"Trevor.”

"Trevor who?"

“Someone named Trevor who’d like to get you some coffee."

"When would Trevor like to do that?” Ashley replied smiling as she did so.

Suddenly, she heard a knock on the window and saw a familiar face; Trevor was smiling charmingly. Ashley shook her head and let him in.

"What are you doing here?" Ashley asked when he kissed her cheek.

"I was in the neighborhood.”

“In the neighborhood, hmm…”

“I was taking a few phone calls and you know…I just happened to be on the phone with Julian…”

“Okay and—”

“He invited me to his birthday party, bragging about how much liquor would be there and the most gorgeous women and…I couldn’t refuse, could I?” Trevor mused.

"Ok—“ Ashley closed her laptop and raised her eyebrow at Trevor. “And he told you exactly where you’d find me this morning too?

"Exactly! But before I go on, let me go get us some coffee. What would you like?”

Trevor came back shortly after and seemed bothered although he was trying to mask it. "What are you working on?” he asked reaching for her notebook: “Relationship with Peter Pan”, ”Orgasms and a Successful Relationship", “Sex and Working in Bed.” He raised his eyebrows humming. "Do you want to talk this over with me?” he joked.

Ashley snatched her notebook from him and grabbed the rest of her notes off the table.

“These are some things I’m putting together for a magazine.”

“I could be useful, for your research and something else…” Trevor joked seeing Ashley blush.

"Maybe I’ll change topics just for you?" Ashley mused. “I thought you took offense after the last... incident.”

Trevor shifted and folded his hands.

"I came to apologize to you…" Trevor began, but Ashley interrupted.

"You have nothing to apologize for—”

“Hmm?”

Ashley blushed. "I mean, it wasn't your fault,” she said slowly. “I gave you some signals... Maybe it’s best to forget it ever happened.”

Trevor analyzed each of Ashley’s words. He knew she wasn't entirely honest because her eyes said something different. She was happy, so Trevor couldn't believe that the kiss the other day meant nothing to Ashley. She kissed back.

“So what’s really on your mind, Trevor?”

"I broke up with Melinda," Trevor admitted.

"You broke up with—” Ashley repeated. “I’m so freakin’ sorry…”

"It’s your fault," Trevor joked as if he was playing with Ashley’s mind.

“I know, I know…” Ashley joked but seriously.

Trevor added, “Long work schedules, too many nights, and we were missing out on having good times lately…”

“Don’t tell me you guys broke up today?” Ashley sighed.

“No. On Sunday.”

“Today’s Wednesday and you seem so over it already.”

“Yeah, give me some advice on how to get over it forever…”

“Appreciate the little things…” Ashley said avoiding Trevor’s stare. Thousands of thoughts were floating around in her head as they were all screaming simultaneously. She was already done drinking her coffee as she tried processing everything.

"What now?” Ashley asked.

"I don't know… I think I could take you out on a real date, now that we're both happily single…”
