“Who’s excited for the train?” my mom asks.
“Me!” Cooper yells excitedly.
I try not to roll my eyes. I’d much rather be with my sorority sisters at the annual get-together. A rager in Miami sounds better than celebrating a four-year-old’s birthday on a train, but I promised him I’d be there. After Mom said none of his classmates agreed to come, there really was no option but to say yes.
“Then we better get you on the train,” I tease, scooping Cooper up in my arms.
He laughs excitedly. Some adults look over with mild interest until they see four-year-old Cooper in his birthday hat. His shirt has a train on it; he’s holding a little Thomas the Tank Engine. It’s safe to say he’s obsessed with trains.
Everyone in our family knows to get him trains no matter the holiday. If gifts are exchanged, he always gets trains and never gets less excited. Mom and I walk him through the walkway on the train. Cooper shares train facts with us—as best as a little kid can—until we find a place to set our things down.
Just one overnight train trip. I can do this for my brother, even if I don’t like the idea of being stuck on a train. It could be worse. Mom promised me up and down that it will just be the three of us. Cooper’s dad (my ex-stepdad) won’t be joining us. Thank the gods above.
