I always thought my brothers were troublemakers, but this…this was on a different level.
The night air bit at my cheeks as I hurried to keep up with them, my hands tucked tightly into my hoodie pockets. When Daniel called me out of the blue and told me to meet him at their place—now—it didn’t seem like I had a choice. Not with the way his voice sounded. Daniel could be demanding, sure, but this was something else.
“Are we almost there?” I asked, feeling the creeping unease of walking so far off campus with them.
“Relax, Bethie,” Daniel said, flashing me his typical grin, but something serious was in his eyes. “We’re almost there.”
I tried to play it cool, but the heavy, tense vibe around them was impossible to ignore. Michael and Tad flanked me on either side, steering me through the dim, shadowy streets toward their rundown off-campus apartment. I felt trapped, surrounded by my own brothers but with no idea what they wanted with me.
We finally reached their place, and once we were inside, I took in the mess—pizza boxes, empty coffee mugs, textbooks scattered like they hadn’t been touched in weeks. I’d tease them for it, but I kept my mouth shut.
I crossed my arms, leaning back against the wall. “Alright,” I said, my voice steady, though my heart was pounding. “Mind telling me what this is all about?”
Daniel and Michael exchanged glances, and Tad leaned back on the couch, looking like he’d rather be anywhere but here. Finally, Daniel looked at me with a smirk that was anything but reassuring.
