Chapter one

bus, the chilly November air biting at her nose as she inhaled the familiar scent of her hometown. The sidewalks were lined with golden leaves, the last remnants of a season that had long ago bid farewell to the warm embrace of the sun. She felt a thrill of anticipation mingled with a hint of apprehension as she approached the house, she had left behind to chase her dreams.

Her mother's new boyfriend, Tom, greeted her with a warm smile. His strong arms encircled her, pulling her into a tight hug.

"Holly, finally we meet in person," he said. “Sally said you were beautiful, but wow.”

Her mother had been gushing about her new boyfriend for the last three weeks but Holly wasn't prepared for how attractive he'd be in person. He was definitely a step up from the men her mother generally dragged home.

As they pulled apart, she felt a spark, something electric, something that was definitely not supposed to be there. She had seen his pictures, sure, but in person he was something else entirely. Rugged, with a sprinkle of salt and pepper in his hair, and eyes that could make any woman's heart skip a beat. She tried to shake off the feeling, attributing it to the stress of the long journey but as she glanced up at the much older man, he winked and she could feel it from the tips of her toes to the top of her head.

“This should be an interesting holiday,” Holly mumbled as she walked past to find her mom.

Chapter two

as she rounded the corner, her eyes lighting up like the Christmas tree that twinkled in the living room window. "You made it!"

"How was the ride? Was there a lot of traffic? You must be exhausted! You have to see the casserole I just put in the oven!" Holly laughed at her mother's vibrancy. She'd always been like this: excited by life and barely taking a breath.

"Mom," Holly hugged her mother, "I've missed you."

"I've missed you too, baby." Her mom pulled back with tears in her eyes. I'm happy to see you following your dreams, but I wish college was closer so we didn't go so long between visits." She wiped away a tear that escaped. "Anyway," her mom brushed her hands on her apron and pulled her farther into the kitchen. Come take a look at the turkey."
