gonna miss the sunset!" Treena called out from the open door of their mom's old minivan. Her brothers, Tad, Tyler, and Timmy, lounged around the living room, lazily packing snacks and clothes into their backpacks. They had spent the whole day debating the perfect playlist for the road trip, and now the last sizzling rays of the day were escaping through the windows.
"Hold your horses, sis, we're coming," Tad drawled, tossing a bag of chips into the van with a smack.
"This is the last hurrah before college, you know. We've gotta make it epic," Tyler added with a grin, slapping a high-five into Timmy's outstretched hand.
They piled in, the van groaning under the weight of their combined enthusiasm and luggage. Treena took the wheel, feeling a strange mix of excitement and responsibility. This trip was supposed to be a final bonding experience before they all scattered to different parts of the country. The engine rumbled to life, and they pulled away from the only home they had ever known, the dusty street disappearing in the rearview mirror.
The road stretched before them like a ribbon of black ink, beckoning them to unravel its mysteries. They had talked about this trip for weeks, each adding wild ideas to the itinerary. Hiking in the mountains, swimming in the ocean, maybe even skydiving if they could convince their mom to sign the waiver. But as the miles ticked by, the conversations grew quieter, the anticipation thick in the air.
rules?" Treena said, breaking the silence.
"No dating," Tad quipped.
"No fighting," Timmy corrected.
"And no telling Mom about anything," Tyler finished with a wink.
They all laughed, but Treena felt a twinge of nerves. She knew that even the best-laid plans had a way of going off the rails. But she pushed the thought aside and focused on the horizon. The sun was setting, painting the sky with a fiery glow, and she couldn't wait to see what adventures lay ahead.
They had been driving for hours when Tad suggested they pull over at a roadside diner for dinner. The neon lights flickered in the distance, promising a greasy meal and a taste of nostalgia. Treena's stomach growled in agreement, and she steered the van towards the parking lot. The gravel crunched under the tires as they pulled in, the smell of gas and grilled onions wafting through the open windows.
