Levi was feeling nervous about the Valentine’s Day present he was about to give Carter. Carter had made Levi his favorite treat, a lemon meringue pie from scratch, and it made the whole apartment smell wonderful. The lemony marshmallow scent was making him think that maybe he should have went with a more traditionally normal gift, but it was too late now. All he could do now was hand the box over and hope.

Carter took the box that was covered in black paper with red and pink hearts on it and removed the lid. Inside was a headband with orange striped cat ears on it. Levi saw the look of amused confusion on Carter’s face and quickly began explaining his gift giving choices.

“I know that you really like cats and were sad when you had to change your Halloween costume last minute when your old pair broke. And I was also thinking about what you had said about maybe trying to make the holiday feel special. I thought it might add something interesting to date night,” Levi started trailing off towards the end of his explanation.

This caused Carter to blush a little for a moment, but he found it to be a thoughtful gift. He had mentioned that he would like to try something different on Valentines to make it stand out. He was willing to give this a try. Carter put the headband on while making a playful seductive face and asked “Do I look cute meow” except he was trying to say ‘now’ and it came out as if he was mimicking a cat’s voice.

Carter’s face turns bright red with embarrassment thinking he had just unintentionally made a really silly joke, but Levi was staring wide eyed at him and pointed to his own cheeks. This caused Carter to reach up and touch his burning cheeks, but what he found there made all of the blood rush back out of his face. There were whiskers on his face, real whiskers. With one hand on either side of his face he grabbed a single whisker between each of his thumbs and forefingers and slid down their lengths to try to understand. They were almost a foot long and touching them made his face feel weird, not quite painful while also being not quite ticklish.

Carter ran to the bathroom mirror, desperate to know what’s going on, and how far this transformation has gone. He was relieved to see that he hadn’t turned orange or grown fur all over his body, but what had changed was impressive enough. In addition to the whiskers that had sprouted on his cheeks, his eyes had also changed. The once muted grey-blue had turned to a vibrant almost yellow shade of green, and the irises had become much more ovular. They were very reminiscent of a cat’s slit pupil, though not as sharp.

As he relaxed his reflection caused him to jump again. The ears on top of his head moved. He had noticed before that these were of a better quality than a typical Halloween prop. They were fluffier and had different kinds of fur and fabric to better mimic the look of an actual housecat’s ears, but on his head they looked even more lifelike. He lifted his fluffy brown hair to inspect where the headband should be and to check for his regular human ears. He found all three of them to be where they should be.

Levi knocked on the door “Are you okay? I was checking out the listing for those ears, trying to see if this was supposed to happen or if any of the reviews mention this, but no luck.” he called through the oak.

“At least I’m not hearing through them too” Carter mumbled to himself too quietly for Levi to hear over the bathroom fan. “Yeah I’m okay,” he called back in a steady voice that he hoped Levi would believe. He had his hand on the doorknob about to unlock it and leave when he stopped and felt the base of his spine to check if he had a tail. He found a lump and followed it over his butt and down a pant leg. He quickly pulled down both his pants and underwear to release its full length. He turned sideways to inspect his new tail in the body mirror on the back of the door and try to figure out the best way to situate the waists of his clothes around this new appendage.

Finally settling on the band of his jock strap over the tail and the top of his black jeans under it. Carter unlocked and opened the door to find Levi looking very worried on the other side. “I’m really sorry, and I can’t find anything about this online, I don’t know if they’re just suppressing it or if this is the first time or what. I’ll help you find a solution - is that a tail?” Levi cut off his own stream of concerned speech and stood staring at Carter’s soft and striped tail. He reached out to touch it seemingly subconsciously. His hand sinking into the plush fur. The action of petting his boyfriend’s orange and white short haired cat tail seemed to soothe him some.

“It’s really okay, I know you didn’t do anything nefarious and I think it would be alright to wait until tomorrow to start trying to reverse this. I really don’t want to cancel our Valentine’s Day date.” Carter said assuredly.
