The monstrous form stepped nearer to me and walked around so I had a clear view of it from where I lay vulnerable on my side, my arms pinned behind my back and my ankles linked together. Its body was large and muscular and I could see its purplish face in detail as it leaned in close to audibly sniff me. Its nose was normal enough, but its mouth was full of canines that didn’t quite fit causing it to not close properly. Its ears were long and pointed, bending backwards into its black hair that hung around its thick neck. The eyes that searched my face and body glowed faintly red.

I was terrified, there was nothing I could do. Even if I had somewhere to go, I couldn’t wiggle my body away fast enough. My eyes started leaking, but I forced myself not to sob, I wouldn’t let the assholes that used me as bait hear me. My fear was momentarily colored by confusion as the demon abruptly snapped its head toward the men that had looked up from their bowing positions. They dropped back to the dirt immediately, but it was too late, they had been seen.

It let out a growl and took two menacing steps toward them and they scrambled away into the night, never looking back toward their sacrifice. The demon didn’t bother to pursue them, instead it looked back at me. It began running its clawed fingers along my limbs and ribs, almost sizing me up. I recoiled slightly at its touch, but made no move to get away. I watched it as I lay trussed in the dirt. It placed a strong hand on my head and tousled my shaggy brown hair. I felt a pang of comfort cut through my fear, but it was fleeting. I knew better than to trust that this demon was just going to comfort me and send me on my way.

Today was a good day, really productive. I thought about all the ground we had covered as I lay in my tent trying to fall asleep. We had made it more than ten miles into the forest today, which was better than the eight miles we traversed yesterday. The research group I was with said we were only a couple miles away from where we’d be setting up the cameras and equipment.
