I never knew how to explain to anyone what was wrong with me until I met Cordell. I mean yes, I realized I was drawn to men old enough to be my father. Yes, I knew I couldn’t seem to say no to anything I was told to do. But I didn’t know what it was called. I knew I was drawn to assholes, and that they seemed to know that no matter how nasty they told me to act, I’d do it without question. I knew it was wrong, but I couldn’t stop.
It had all started just a year ago, two days after my eighteenth birthday. My best friend Riley and I had plans to go to the lake and swim to celebrate my birthday. She was still at work and must have been running late. But I wasn’t worried. I just sat out on her back deck and soaked up the sun. I felt warm and happy, then a shadow and something was blocking the sun. “Oh, sorry Erin, didn’t mean to block your sun.” Riley’s Dad Steve Austin was standing beside me. I smiled up at him. “It’s okay Mister Austin. I’m just waiting for Riley. We're heading for the lake for a swim.”
He nodded. “That’s right, it was your birthday just a few days ago, wasn’t it?”
“Yes, Sir two days ago.”
“how old are you now Erin?”
“Eighteen.”
“All grown up then, aren’t you? Did you have a good birthday? Lots of cake with all those candles?”
“Oh No Sir. Mama said I’m an adult now. I didn’t need a birthday cake. The ladies at the grocery store gave me a cupcake on my lunch break with a candle on it.”
Mr. Austin just nodded his head. “Did you make a wish at least? Don’t tell me what it is, so it will come true.”
